Silversea Luxury Cruises À OSLO

OSLO
OSLO

What sets Oslo apart from other European cities is not so much its cultural traditions or its internationally renowned museums as its simply stunning natural beauty. How many world capitals have subway service to the forest, or lakes and hiking trails within city limits? But Norwegians will be quick to remind you that Oslo is a cosmopolitan metropolis with prosperous businesses and a thriving nightlife.Once overlooked by travelers to Scandinavia, Oslo is now a major tourist destination and the gateway to what many believe is Scandinavia's most scenic country. View more

That's just one more change for this town of 650,000—a place that has become good at survival and rebirth throughout its 1,000-year history. In 1348 a plague wiped out half the city's population. In 1624 a fire burned almost the whole of Oslo to the ground. It was redesigned and renamed Christiania by Denmark's royal builder, King Christian IV. After that it slowly gained prominence as the largest and most economically significant city in Norway.During the mid-19th century, Norway and Sweden were ruled as one kingdom, under Karl Johan. It was then that the grand main street that's his namesake was built, and Karl Johans Gate has been at the center of city life ever since. In 1905 the country separated from Sweden, and in 1925 an act of Parliament finally changed the city's name back to Oslo. Today, Oslo is Norway's political, economic, industrial, and cultural capital.

The Palace was built in the early 19th century by King Charles III of Norway and is now home to the Norwegian Royal family. As your guide escorts you around this fascinating site, you will learn about the history and use of the Fortress throughout time, and you will have some wonderful photo opportunities as well. You will also visit the beautiful Oslo City Hall, famous for holding the yearly Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, and see the Oslo Opera House, home of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet.

After your time in the city center, you will continue to the popular Oslo Viking Museum - home to the world's best-preserved Viking ships and finds from Viking tombs. Here, you will enjoy a fascinating interior visit escorted by your tour guide.

City Tour

Depart the pier for the brief drive through the city centre. Along the way, pass by City Hall, the National Theatre, the Royal Residence and suburban villa areas en route to the Bygdøy Peninsula.

Viking Ship Museum

Next, drive to the famous Viking Ship Museum to view some well-preserved ships from the Viking Age. The three Viking ships displayed at the museum are very well preserved, and serve as an excellent example of the Viking Period's daring initiative and ship-building craftsmanship. The Gokstad ship is a typical seagoing ship, while the Oseberg ship is richly adorned and was probably used as a pleasure boat along the coast. In addition there is a collection of household implements found during the excavations of the ships, which took place during the last part of the 19th century.

Vigeland Sculpture Park

From here, proceed for a visit to the Vigeland Sculpture Park, Norway's most visited attraction. The park features 200 sculptures in bronze, granite and iron, a monolith with 121 figures carved from a single block of granite and 36 statue groups surrounding the monolith.

Holmenkollen Ski Jump

Next, re-board your coach for the drive through the city centre en route to the Holmenkollen Ski Jump, a must-see site offering splendid views overlooking the city.

Afterwards, the coach returns you to the ship.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking. The Vigeland Sculpture Park involves approximately 2,625 feet (about 800 metres) of walking. The tour sequence may vary to avoid congestion. Local currency is required for restroom facilities. The visit to the Ski Jump Tower is not included.

Biking in Oslo

A short walk from the pier brings you to the biking center.

Gear up with a bicycle and helmet and listen to some safety instructions before you venture out in the wonderful city of Oslo.

Discover many of the major sights in a fun and relaxed way as this approximately three-hour adventure has you cycling along car-free paths, through parks, down hidden back streets and along the fjord.

Your guide will reveal the stories behind the monuments, such as the medieval castle, the Royal Palace and the world-famous Frogner Sculpture Park.

Return your equipment back at the biking center; then, you're free to explore Oslo on foot at your own pace, or walk directly back to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of activity including in uphill terrain (2 hours bike ride). It is recommended only for those guests who are physically fit and experienced bikers. We suggest you wear appropriate footwear, and dress in layers with a wind and waterproof jacket. A little waist or back pack may be helpful to carry water from the ship, camera and clothing accessories as needed. Guests must be at least 12 years old to participate on this tour.

Culinary Experience: Norwegian Food and Oslo’s best handcrafted beers

Experience the flavours of Norway and Oslo's finest handcrafted beer during this memorable, full-day culinary excursion.

Oslo City, Akershus Fortress, Mathallen Food Court, Tour and Tastings

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute orientation drive through Oslo City. Along the way, pass by the Akershus Fortress and stop for photos (time-permitting) at the spectacular Oslo Opera House en route to the Akerselva River. In 2012, Oslo's first food court, Mathallen, was opened along the river banks and has become a favourite spot for locals. Mathallen is a centre for Norwegian food culture, where chefs and the general public can purchase products from Norwegian small-scale producers and foreign special imports. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour, followed by a tasting of local Norwegian cheese and handcrafted local Norwegian beers.

Norwegian Beer Academy, Akersberget Restaurant

Next, walk around the corner from Mathallen for a visit to the Norwegian Beer Academy, Oslo's smallest pub with the largest collection of beers in town. A stop is made here for another glass of local beer before continuing on-foot to the nearby Akersberget restaurant. This 250-year-old typical Norwegian, wooden, red-coloured house is one of the oldest traditional restaurants in Oslo, and specializes in local food and beer. The restaurant works closely with the Norwegian Beer Academy, and is famous for its beer tastings. Upon arrival, you are served a Norwegian-style dinner accompanied by a tasting of two other types of locally-produced beer.

City Centre, Norwegian Parliament, National Theatre, Old University, Royal Palace, City Hall

Throughout the tour, learn more about the history of Norwegian beer, the Telthusbakken area, where the food court, restaurant and one of Oslo's prettiest streets are located, as well as tales of dragons and local lore. After lunch, walk to a nearby local pub, the Hytta Bar, for another beer stop, then re-board your coach for the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier. En route, drive through the city centre and pass by renowned landmarks such as the Norwegian Parliament, National Theatre, Old University, Royal Palace, and twin-towered City Hall. Guests may opt to remain in the city centre for further exploration, and return to the ship at their own expense.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, at times over uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe and non-slip walking shoes, and bring sun protection and a weatherproof jacket from the ship. Guests must be at least 21 years old to participate in tastings of alcoholic beverages. The tour sequence may vary.
