On one of the best stretches of the Mediterranean, this classic luxury destination is one of the most sought-after addresses in the world. With all the high-rise towers you have to look hard to find the Belle Époque grace of yesteryear. View more

But if you head to the town's great 1864 landmark Hôtel de Paris—still a veritable crossroads of the buffed and befurred Euro-gentry—or enjoy a grand bouffe at its famous Louis XV restaurant, or attend the opera, or visit the ballrooms of the casino, you may still be able to conjure up Monaco's elegant past. Prince Albert II, a political science graduate from Amherst College, traces his ancestry to Otto Canella, who was born in 1070. The Grimaldi dynasty began with Otto's great-great-great-grandson, Francesco Grimaldi, also known as Frank the Rogue. Expelled from Genoa, Frank and his cronies disguised themselves as monks and in 1297 seized the fortified medieval town known today as Le Rocher (the Rock). Except for a short break under Napoléon, the Grimaldis have been here ever since, which makes them the oldest reigning family in Europe. In the 1850s a Grimaldi named Charles III made a decision that turned the Rock into a giant blue chip. Needing revenue but not wanting to impose additional taxes on his subjects, he contracted with a company to open a gambling facility. The first spin of the roulette wheel was on December 14, 1856. There was no easy way to reach Monaco then—no carriage roads or railroads—so no one came. Between March 15 and March 20, 1857, one person entered the casino—and won two francs. In 1868, however, the railroad reached Monaco, and it was filled with Englishmen who came to escape the London fog. The effects were immediate. Profits were so great that Charles eventually abolished all direct taxes. Almost overnight, a threadbare principality became an elegant watering hole for European society. Dukes (and their mistresses) and duchesses (and their gigolos) danced and dined their way through a world of spinning roulette wheels and bubbling champagne—preening themselves for nights at the opera, where such artists as Vaslav Nijinsky, Sarah Bernhardt, and Enrico Caruso came to perform. Along with the tax system, its sensational position on a broad, steep peninsula that bulges into the Mediterranean—its harbor sparkling with luxury cruisers, its posh mansions angling awnings toward the nearly perpetual sun—continues to draw the rich and famous. One of the latest French celebrities to declare himself "Monégasque," thus giving up his French passport, is superchef Alain Ducasse, who said that he made the choice out of affection for Monaco rather than tax reasons. Pleasure boats vie with luxury cruisers in their brash beauty and Titanic scale, and teams of handsome young men—themselves dyed blond and tanned to match—scour and polish every gleaming surface. As you might expect, all this glitz doesn't come cheap. Eating is expensive, and even the most modest hotels cost more here than in nearby Nice or Menton. As for taxis, they don't even have meters so you are completely at the driver's mercy (with prices skyrocketing during events such as the Grand Prix). For the frugal, Monaco is the ultimate day-trip, although parking is as coveted as a room with a view. At the very least you can afford a coffee at Starbucks. The harbor district, known as La Condamine, connects the new quarter, officially known as Monte Carlo with Monaco-Ville (or Le Rocher), a medieval town on the Rock, topped by the palace, the cathedral, and the Oceanography Museum. Have no fear that you'll need to climb countless steps to get to Monaco-Ville, as there are plenty of elevators and escalators climbing the steep cliffs. But shuttling between the lovely casino grounds of Monte Carlo and Old Monaco, separated by a vast port, is a daunting proposition for ordinary mortals without wings, so hop on the No. 1 bus from Saint Roman, or No. 2 from the Jardin Exotique - Both stop at Place du Casino and come up to Monaco Ville.

Excursions depuis MONTE CARLO

Côte d'Azur Flightseeing

Marvel at the dramatic coastline of the famed French Riviera in the air and take in spectacular views of Port Hercules, home to some of the most luxurious yachts in the world and the location of the James Bond film GoldenEye. Catch a glimpse of the Monaco Grand Prix race circuit and see the incredibly famous Monte Carlo Casino. Experience the stunning panoramic beauty of the Cote d'Azur in a unique way during this scenic and exhilarating helicopter flight-seeing tour.

Depart the pier for the brief transfer to the Fontvieille helicopter pad. Upon arrival, receive your safety and flight instructions then board the helicopter.

Helicopter Ride

After lift-off, the helicopter commences the 20-minute flight over Monaco's streets, the Prince's Palace, the Cathedral, the famous Oceanographic Museum and the surrounding Italian border. Next head towards Roquebrune Village which is a marvellous village adorned with red tiles, and features a 10th-century castle. From here, your flight continues over the Cap Martin, Menton and the Italian border.

The return flight travels towards the village of La Turbie for a look at the famous 'Trophée d'Auguste', a Roman monument symbolising the power of Rome and the glory of Augustus. Now only 115 feet (35 meters) in height, the ruin is still an imposing monument 2,000 years after it was built.

Upon leaving La Turbie fly back down to the coast via Cap d'Ail and return to the Fontvieille helicopter pad.

On arrival, re-board your van for the brief transfer to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires a minimal amount of walking; however, guests must be able to board the helicopter without assistance. The actual flight time is approximately 20 minutes. Price is per person, with a minimum/maximum of four guests required to operate this tour. Due to security reasons, the pilot does not provide in-flight commentary.

Hilltop Villages of French Riviera Roquebrune and St Agnes

Discover three gems of the French Riviera on this half-day excursion through some of the most idyllic, beautiful mountain and coastal villages in the Alpes-Maritimes region of Southeast France.

Roquebrune Cap Martin Village

Depart from Monaco and drive 20 minutes to your first stop, the lovely Roquebrune-Cap-Martin village, full of medieval history and known as the home of the famous Swiss-born Architect Le Corbusier. Within this medieval village is its most well-known landmark, a 10th-century castle on a hilltop that is believed to be one of the oldest in all of France. There is time to take a stroll through this incredible, ancient and picturesque place, with its fortified gates, vaulted archways, plazas and fountains. Walk to one of the many scenic viewpoints to capture stunning panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Gorbio

Drive inland to the incredible medieval village of Gorbio, perched high in the mountains of the Alpes-Maritimes in a charming setting that offers more amazing views of the sea below. Enjoy a guided walking tour of the village, including the Place de la Republique village square with its 300-year-old elm tree and its pointed-steeple 17th century church that appears as if out of a picture book. Continue on with another short drive to Saint Agnes.

Saint Agnes

Expect even more spectacular panoramic views in Saint Agnes, nicknamed the "Balcony of the Cote Azur." Established high up in the mountains above Menton at an altitude of 800 meters, Saint Agnes is referred to as the highest coastal village in Europe, offering a splendid vantage point to see both the Italian and French Riviera from above. Walk through its photogenic, ancient streets and pause at a local café terrace for refreshments and a snack of homemade lemon pie as you take in the 360-degree fantastic panoramic view.

Make the return 1-hour scenic drive back down the hills and mountains to return to the ship.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking (2.5 km), including a change of 50 m in altitude and uneven cobblestone and unpaved terrain, making this tour less appropriate for guests with walking difficulties; this tour is not accessible for wheelchairs. There are steep inclined streets in Rogebrune and Saint Agnes. Children as young as 10 may participate; all children must be accompanied by an adult (please note long coach drive). Guest prone to motion sickness may not find this tour suitable due to curvy village roads traveled by coach. Guests must be able to board and exit the coach on their own. Guests are recommended to wear comfortable clothing and dress for local weather. Please expect some sun exposure. Space on this tour is limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Monaco green Secrets

Gardening enthusiasts and plant-lovers of all kinds adore this excursion to discover the best-kept secrets of Monaco, the city's incredible gardens. Led by an expert botanist, explore three different gardens of Monaco in the city's most important parks. Your guide leads you to the most interesting plant species and park facts.

On your four-hour tour visit the Japanese Garden, the famous Casino Garden (of Bond movie fame) and the Little Africa garden. As part of your tour, go back to the time of the dinosaurs and find some of the oldest trees in existence (from 200 million years ago): the living fossils of the Wollemi Pine along with other ancient species.

Japanese Garden

The Japanese Garden was created in 1994 when Prince Rainier III commissioned the Zen landscape architect Yasuo Beppu of Japan to create a truly unique Zen garden that uses both Japanese and Mediterranean plants. In addition to receiving expert commentary, enjoy the sensory experience of the smell of the floral perfumes and the visual splendor of the garden's unique bonsai landscape. Features of the garden include all that one might expect of a Japanese garden, including a pond with islands, a waterfall, a tea house and a Zen garden. The garden is still maintained by Mr. Beppu, who returns annually to work with the gardeners. Discover the Japanese Garden for 90 minutes before walking to the Casino Gardens to see more.

Casino and Little Africa Gardens

The Casino Gardens, also called the gardens of the Société des Bains de Mer, were developed at the same time as the Monte-Carlo Casino. The gardens were built in 1893 and designed by architect Edouard André, who was inspired by the fashion of the French Riviera. Stroll through the waterfalls, streams and landscaped valleys amidst the brightly-hued tropical plants that have served as the backdrop for several James Bond films. Contained within the Casino Gardens is the unique "Little Africa" garden, which is full of subtropical and tropical species, including trees with impressive aerial roots and vast, buttress-like branches.

After an hour's tour of the Casino Gardens, enjoy some free time to relax, take in the garden views, or discover more plant species. Walk back to the Japanese Garden and transfer back to the ship.

Please note: This tour involves moderate activity, with about 1km walking on paved surfaces and 50 m of difference in altitude with a staircase of about 30 steps. Periods of standing should be expected on this four-hour but there are benches along the way. This tour is not suitable for guests with walking difficulties or for those in wheelchairs. Guests must be able to board and exit the coach on their own. Guests are recommended to wear comfortable clothing, with several layers to prepare for the day's weather, and comfortable walking shoes. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Monte Carlo, Middle Corniche, Eze, Double Gateway, Free Time

Depart the pier for the short, scenic drive along the Middle Corniche en route to the medieval village of Eze, which is perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the coast. Upon arrival, walk up to and through the 14th-century double gateway, and begin your guided stroll through this medieval city. A sentry walk leads into the steep and narrow streets, passageways and stairways. At times, the streets run beneath carefully restored houses that now serve as smart boutiques or artists' studios.

Nice, Promenade des Anglais, Baie des Anges, Negresco Hotel, Russian Orthodox Cathedral

Next, re-board your coach and continue on to Nice, the capital of the French Riviera, along the 'Promenade

Here, tall houses tightly-packed across the narrow streets are often festooned with bright flowers or hanging laundry, and designed to provide shade and keep the streets cool during the long, hot summers. A stop is made for a leisurely stroll along the Cours Saleya, the elegant promenade of Old Nice, which is now lined with shops, restaurants and the famous Flower Market. Afterward, some free time is made available for lunch at the Market Square at your own expense. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 875 yards (about 800 metres), at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and many steps to negotiate in Eze Village. Walking in Eze Village and Nice is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection and bottled water from the ship. This tour is offered in Monaco during the Grand Prix. At this time and due to extreme traffic and parking limitations, there may be a ten-minute-20-minute guided walk to/from the coach parking location. Local currency is required for restroom facilities. Groceries and flower markets are closed on Mondays, but a flea market can be found by the Cours Saleya. The tour sequence may vary.

Sustainable Monaco with Market Tasting

Discover the opulent elegance of Monaco's highlights on a walking tour that shows you the history of Monte Carlo's grace and glamour (and gardens!), followed by a delicious tasting of local specialties at the much-photographed Condamine Market at the grand Place d'Armes.

Monaco Guided Walking Tour

Cross the busy Hercule harbour by ferry (15 minutes) and begin your 90-minute walking tour of Monaco.

Begin in the Monte Carlo quarter and learn the history of the Casino and Opera House. Interestingly, the brainchild and force behind the success of the Monte Carlo Casino is thanks to Princess Caroline, mother to Prince Charles III (who commissioned the successful building that opened in 1879); Princess Caroline is responsible for finding the right manager François Blanc (aka The Magician of Monte Carlo) and architect (Charles Garnier, who also designed the Paris Opera House) to execute her vision. The result is the grand and luxurious casino for which Monte Carlo is famous today, a glorious example of belle epoque architecture. Tour the interior of the Opera House that adjoins the Casino, enjoying its richly furnished interior, with a marble foyer, columns of onyx and exquisitely ornate bas relief sculptures in gold.

Walk also past Hotel de Paris, the Café de Paris and the incredible Casino gardens that have been featured in several James Bond films. The gardens were built in 1893 and designed by architect Edouard André, who was inspired by the fashion of the French Riviera. Stroll through the waterfalls, streams and landscaped valleys amidst the brightly-hued tropical plants and see the unique "Little Africa" garden, which is full of subtropical and tropical species, including trees with impressive aerial roots and vast, buttress-like branches.

Place d'Armes and Marché de la Condamine

Your walking tour leads you to the covered market of the Marché de la Condamine on Place d'Armes. Open daily, the open-air market sells Monaco's freshest fruit, vegetables and flowers and is a delight for touring photographers wishing to snap photos of the vibrant local colour, including the much-photographed and yellow-striped tented market stands framed by the elegant buildings and fountain at the Place d'Armes.

Also featured in the market are specialty meets, cheeses, wine and other domestic goods. Enjoy a tasting of local specialties (with table service) and browse the market for a bit before returning to the ship.

Please note: This tour involves moderate activity, with about 1.5km walking over mostly level surfaces and 300 meters of additional uphill walking. This tour is not suitable for guests with mobility limitations, as this is a walking tour and guests must be able to keep pace with the group. This excursion is not wheelchair accessible. 50 m of difference in altitude with a staircase of about 30 steps. Periods of standing expected but there are benches along the way. This tour is not suitable for guests with walking difficulties or for those in wheelchairs. Guests must be able to board and exit the coach on their own. Guests are recommended to wear comfortable clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Space on this tour is limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.
