Matarani is the gateway to Arequipa, where you discover its very interesting prehistory that spanned over 10,000 years, ending with the arrival of the Spanish in the 1530s. Arequipa is rich with not only Inca archaeology, but also various pre-Inca cultures, and even earlier nomadic hunter-gatherers. Arequipa is also known as the 'Ciudad Blanca' (White City) for the numerous and magnificent constructions of temples, convents, big houses and palaces sculpted in white ashlar. It also possesses an excellent climate with almost 300 days of sun a year, with transparent blue sky.

DAY ONE - Matarani / Arequipa

Depart the ship in Matarani in the mid-morning to begin your Mid-Voyage Land Adventure with the 2.5-hour drive to Arequipa, Peru's second largest city. It is also known as 'the White City' because of the white volcanic rock called 'sillar' that was used in the construction of many of its buildings. Upon arrival, sight tour of the main square, Plaza de Armas, with its colonial arcaded buildings and the impressive, twin-towered Cathedral, a fine example of Spanish Colonial architecture. Stop at the Santa Catalina Monastery, founded in 1580 and enlarged over the centuries until it became a city within the city. Your guide takes you down narrow streets and you pass through arched colonnades surrounding courtyards, some with fountains, flowering plants and trees. See churches, chapels, plazas, interior rooms and common areas.

Later in the afternoon, arrive at the hotel for check-in. Dinner this evening is served at the hotel. Be sure to retire early and request a wake-up call in preparation for a dawn flight to Cusco.

DAY TWO - Arequipa / Cusco

Meet your guide in the hotel lobby for the very early transfer to the Arequipa Airport. Check-in and board your flight, touching down briefly in Juliaca before continuing to Cusco. After claiming your luggage, board the coach and head towards Sacsayhuaman, once an important Inca cultural centre located on the city's outskirts, before driving to Cusco. Here you have the opportunity to discover what makes Cusco so unique and to see how the colonial era blends with the culture of the Inca. Then proceed to the Santo Domingo Convent, which originated on the grounds of the ancient Koricancha Temple that was dedicated to the worship of the sun. According to the chronicles, the temple was covered in gold leaf and filled with golden images. The city's showpiece is the main square, faced by the magnificent, 16th-century cathedral, also known as the Church of Victory. Conclude your tour at the Monasterio Hotel, where lunch is served and you will check-in for the evening.

The afternoon is yours to enjoy at your leisure. Gather with fellow Silversea guests for cocktails and music, prior to dinner at the hotel.

After breakfast, depart the hotel, headed by coach to the Rio Sagrado train station to board the Belmond Hiram Bingham luxury train for Machu Picchu. The trip will take approximately 3 hours during which brunch is served. Watch as the train passes through the spectacular scenery of the Urubamba Valley. The trip ends at the Aguas Calientes station at the foot of Machu Picchu. From here, a 25-minute bus ride will take you up a winding road to 'the Lost City of the Incas', arriving around 1:00 p.m. - at an hour when many tourists are on the way back to the train station. The setting of the ruins amongst green-clad mountain peaks is a spectacular and unforgettable sight.

Proceed with a guided walking tour of the Citadel along ancient pathways, staircases and terraces, past temples and towers. For centuries, the site was buried in the jungle until discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. Excavations have been on-going ever since. Much of the walking is on uneven ground and involving steps. Conclude your visit with afternoon tea at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge.

In the early evening, head back to the train station and enjoy once more VIP treatment aboard the Hiram Bingham. During the return journey, relax whilst sipping cocktails, watching live entertainment and enjoying a four-course gourmet dinner.
