LISBON

A glorious mosaic of beauty, freedom and authenticity, Portugal’s capital is a stirring artwork of a city. Known for the seven hills it spreads across, and its stirring fado music, Lisbon is a pastel-coloured blend of houses and beautiful tile artworks - and this creative city strikes a perfect harmony between natural and manmade beauty. Stroll along Alfama's steep, cobbled streets as you explore one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods - where each house and door could be its own photograph. View more

Look for the decorative tiles, with the distinctive blues and whites of Azulejo ceramics, and visit the dedicated museum to learn more. Afterwards, wind up to São Jorge Castle, where views out across Lisbon’s red rooftops unravel. Just one of many majestic viewpoints, you can also seek out Miradouro da Graça for perhaps Lisbon's finest panorama, with the copper-coloured suspension bridge stretching over sparkling water beyond the sea of buildings. The elegant Tower of Belém rises in the Tagus estuary and is a historic defender of these shores. The grand, carved cloisters of Jerónimos Monastery spread out close by, and there's another UNESCO recognised location close by at Sintra, where a colourful town is set amid thick gardens and towering mountains - capped by the royal Pena Palace. Later, relax and take a quick break to drink Ginjinha, a cherry liqueur made from chocolate cups instead of coffee. Lisboetas have a sweet tooth, and the famous Pastel de Nata's crumbling pastry and caramelised-custard topping is the essential accompaniment to any coffee stop.

Upon arrival, explore the 500-year history of the famous Portuguese tiles, or 'azulejos'. The museum is highlighted by gilded carvings, 'azulejos', marble, precious Brazilian woods, and a very long panel of tiles depicting the city of Lisbon in the year 1700.

Some free time is made available to browse the Museum Shop for souvenirs, or relax in the lovely gardens or original cafeteria adorned with curious old kitchen tiles. Following your visit, re-board the coach for the approximately 30-minute return drive to the pier.

Fado Evening - Unesco Cultural and Intangible Heritage of Humanity

Depart the Pier for a 45 minutes panoramic drive that let you enjoy some of sights of Lisbon before arriving to a local restaurant - Sr. Vinho where you will experience an authentic Portuguese Dinner accompanied by a FADO Show.

This is an informal and relaxed evening during which you will not only experience the local food and wine, but also the warm hearted hospitality of Lisbon.

Sr. Vinho, Dinner and Fado Show

You are invited to have dinner in a local Fado Restaurant enjoying a typical 3 courses Portuguese dinner, and listen to the Portuguese Fado songs. Fado (translated as destiny or fate) is a music genre which can be traced from the 1820s in Portugal, but probably with much earlier origins. It is characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor. The music is usually linked to the Portuguese word "Saudade" (that has no match in English but it could be understood as nostalgia felt while missing someone), a word describing a sentiment. There are two main varieties of Fado, namely those of the cities of Lisbon and Coimbra. Modern Fado is popular in Portugal, and has produced many renowned musicians. Mainstream Fado performances during the 20th century included only a singer, a Portuguese guitar player and a classical guitar player but more recent settings range from singer and string quartet to full orchestra.

After Dinner commence your 15 Minutes drive back to the Pier.

Nestled amidst lushly-landscaped grounds, this modern, multi-million-dollar centre opened in 1969 as part of the Gulbenkian Foundation. This world-class museum is named after Armenian oil tycoon Calouste Gulbenkian, whose donation of a sizeable private collection led to its establishment.

National Tile Museum & Tile Workshop

Explore the history of ceramic tile-making and painting in a unique new way during this interactive, half-day excursion to the National Tile Museum.

Lisbon, Convent of Madre Deus, National Tile Museum

Your tour begins with a short drive to the Museu Nacional do Azulejo (National Tile Museum), an art museum in Lisbon that is dedicated to the azulejos (traditional ceramic tiles) of Portugal. Located in the former Convent of Madre Deus, founded by Queen D. Leonor in 1509, the museum was established in 1965 and became a National Museum in 1980.

Cloister, Paintings, Tiles, Carved Woodwork, Ceramics, Porcelain, Faience

Over the centuries, the church in which the museum is housed went through different building campaigns that involved transformations such as its 16th-century Mannerist cloister; remarkable sets of paintings and tiles; the sacristy, which features a Brazilian wood display cabinet and carved-wood frames with paintings; the high choir with its richly-carved, gilt-wood embellishments; the Chapel of Saint Anthony with its 18th-century Baroque decoration; and numerous canvases by the painter, André Gonçalves. The museum's collection features decorative azulejos from the second-half of the 15th century to present-day, and includes ceramics, porcelain, and faience from the 19th and 20th centuries. Its permanent exhibition starts with a display of the materials and techniques used for manufacturing tiles.

Guided Museum Tour, Tile Workshop, Interactive Tile-Painting, Winter Garden, Tea with Pastries

Upon arrival, take a guided tour of this fascinating museum, then proceed to the Tile Workshop. Here, learn ceramic-making techniques and enjoy a unique opportunity to paint your own tile (with the possibility to have it ready on the following day, as it must be boiled). Afterward, proceed to the lovely Winter Garden for tea with local pastries. Following your visit, your tour concludes with an approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

The former launch pad for many of the world's greatest voyages is now where modern travelers discover its history.

Newly-designed especially for our valued World Cruise guests, your World Cruise Collection tour begins with a scenic, approximately one-hour drive to Sintra, a resort town in the foothills of Portugal's Sintra Mountains. Upon arrival, head for a guided tour of the Quinta da Regaleira. This spectacular, early-20th-century residence and UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most surprising of all of Sintra's monuments. Located on the outskirts of the town, it was built between 1904 and 1910, in the last days of the Portuguese monarchy. His vast fortune earned him the nickname of Monteiro dos Milhões, ('Moneybags' Monteiro). He commissioned this unique project of house and landscape from the Italian set-designer and architect Luigi Manini (1848-1936). His genius, along with the mastery of sculptors, stonemasons, craftsmen who had formerly built the Palace Hotel do Buçaco, created this magical place.

Day 2 - After breakfast, you'll be transferred to Pinhão. The village is considered the geographic center of the Douro Demarcated Region and it is here that many of the producing estates of Port wine are located. Once there, you'll embark on a traditional Rabelo boat for a 1-hour cruise. Rabelo is a typical wooden vessel that was used for years to transport Port wine barrels from the Douro to Vila Nova de Gaia. In this cruise, you'll appreciate the Valley from the river perspective, while tasting some Port wine. Upon your arrival to Ferrão, you'll be escorted by Jeep to a winery with a history of over two and a half centuries. You'll do a wine tour with tastings and then experience being an "Enologist for a Day". Try something unique and remarkable, as you monitor the wine making process and create your own wine at the same time. Tonight you'll enjoy a dinner from Chef Rui Paula at DOC restaurant.

Day 3 - This morning you will board the Vintage Train, a completely redesigned and restored 1940´s train. Along with the most breathtaking views, your ride will also provide a unique food experience as a 4-course gourmet menu with wine pairing will be served aboard. Arrive in Porto, the capital and gateway to the north of Portugal. It presents an amazing geographical location that dances with the river Douro. Depart on your tour to the Fundação de Serralves, one of the highlights of Portugal for art lovers. Located on the outskirts of the city, the foundation's museum exhibits works by contemporary artists, including Richard Serra, Ed Ruscha, and Gerhard Richter. Pritzker-winning Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza designed the museum. Dinner at the 1 Michelin Star restaurant Antiqvvm where you will enjoy a Degustation Menu with wine pairing.

Day 4 - This morning depart for a tour of Porto. You will visit Sé do Porto (Porto's Cathedral), the largest religious building in the city, that is both a historical and architectural landmark. Head down towards the river to explore the city's old quarter. UNESCO recognized this area as a World Heritage Site, calling it "a masterpiece of mankind's creative genius." Here you can visit the city's churches and monuments, situated on the banks of the Douro River. You will have a private visit to Taylor´s Port wine cellars with private tasting of the famous Port.
