CANARY ISLANDS (Las Palmas)
CANARY ISLANDS (Las Palmas)

Watch the stars glittering at night, climb jungled volcano calderas, and explore the historical allure of this entry point to the sun-gorged island of Gran Canaria. The sprawling capital of the Canaries is Spain's ninth biggest city, stretched out along the sparkling coastline. Visitors and locals alike blow off steam on the city's urban beaches, before filling out bustling, authentic tapas bars. An offshore barrier of lava strips waves of their power, making Las Canteras's urban beach expanse one of the best and calmest in the Canaries. View more

Strap on your snorkel to explore the seabed, which blooms with colourful fish and tropical reefs. Or, settle back to soak in the warm glow of one of the best climates in the world, while reclining on the soft sand, which arcs along the capital's fringe. At the other end of town, La Vegueta old town is a charming stroll along cobbled streets, wandering past decorative doorways and balconies that beg to be photographed. The narrow 15th-century streets take on an extra romantic air in the evenings, as lanterns cast a soft glow over them. Calle Colon offers a hint of the street's history - and it's here where the handsome colonial house - turned museum - of Christopher Columbus stands. Columbus stayed here to recuperate, between his boundary-redefining voyages. Out of Las Palmas, diverse and exciting volcanic landscapes await, including the spectacular Caldera de Bandama, which plunges 200 metres into the earth. From the summit, views stretch out to the looming island of Fuerteventura unravel. You can also discover pretty white-wash fishing villages, dazzling gardens, and the sun-bathed vineyards that produce Gran Canaria's crispest wines.

Depart the pier for a 30-minute coach ride through spectacular scenery to Cenobio de Valerón, the most impressive of Gran Canaria's pre-Hispanic communal granaries. Visit this highly complex system consisting of over 300 storage caves dug into the volcanic rock. Re-board the coach and continue towards the necropolis of Maipés de Agaete, which lies in a volcanic lava plain below high cliff walls in what used to be the ancient kingdom of Agáldar. This sacred site has hundreds of burial mounds, some over 1,300 years old. Learn firsthand about the early inhabitants of Gran Canaria and the indelible mark left by the ancient indigenous society.

Finca La Laja

After a guided visit round the necropolis, transfer by coach to Finca La Laja, a working farm over 200 years old. Taste local products along with coffee, water and wine. Re-board the coach to relax on the drive back to the pier.

Take a guided tour through its historic center and see the town's 16th-century gofio mill. Also known as the Count's Mill, it is powered by an irrigation channel, unlike Gran Canaria's more common wind-powered mills. The tastefully restored complex, which is still in use, includes the old grain storehouse, roasting oven and miller's house.

Descend into the ravine of Azuaje for the circular hike through its surprisingly lush vegetation and observe the many endemic plant species that your guide will point out. Azuaje nature reserve is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful locations on the island, with stunning areas of forest and spectacular ravines where water flows throughout the year. La Presa de Chira, San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Tunte), Fataga, Lunch

Roque Nublo, Ayacata

Depart the pier by coach and enjoy the hour's scenic drive heading inland towards Gran Canaria's second highest peak, Roque Nublo. Having reached the plateau at the top, which stands at over 1750 meters above sea level, enjoy well-earned breathtaking panoramic views.
