Silversea Luxury Cruises À La Estaca, El Hierro

La Estaca, El Hierro

La Estaca is a scenic, pleasant port which has thankfully so far managed to escape the mass tourism of the rest of the Canaries. The port itself is very quiet and despite not offering much in the way of entertainment, nature lovers will no doubt enjoy the surrounding mountains trails that are perfect for hiking, offering sensational views notably of the Mirador de las Playas, Sabinosa from the El golfo valley. Most people then will go to the capital Valverde, about a 20-minute drive from the port. Taxis are easily available as well as car hire – but the latter must be pre-arranged. Valverde is located at 571m above sea level so depending on the time of year that you are visiting, a warm jumper might be advisable. Founded at the end of the 15th century, this is the youngest settlements in the Canaries, and the only island with a capital that is not on the sea. Because of its position, clear days afford views all the way to La Gomera and Tenerife. The local church Nuestra Señora de la Concepcion is an outstanding example of Canarias architecture. Casa de Las Quinteras, a museum of historic artefacts and a travel back into history, is well worth a visit particularly the little shop that with its artisanal pottery and locally made crafts. Despite being the smallest island in all the Canaries, the island has vast ecological diversity ranging from clear seas with visibility of around 50 metres to lush forests (Valverde meaning literally “Green Valley”).

Excursions depuis La Estaca, El Hierro

Acantilado Cave Exploration with a Speleologist

Depart from the pier for the approximately 90-minute journey towards Cueva de Acantilado. En-route, your first stop will be at the natural pool of La Maceta, the largest natural pool of the island. Then we pass by El Golfo valley through an area of recent lava on the island and climb to the area of the unique junipers (Sabinas) which are a symbol of El Hierro.

Cueva de Acantilado volcanic tube is located at the Orchilla Lighthouse next to the large Montaña Orchilla volcano in the area of the former meridian 0 (most south-western point of Europe) that today is located in London-Greenwich.

Acantilado Cave, translated as cliff cave, is the only cave in the Canary Islands with a window to the sea at an altitude of 85m above the sea of Calm. Inside, it offers all the structures of a volcanic tube such as AA type lava and Pahoehoe type lava, high magma bubbles, lava-stalactites, and minerals such as calcites, plasters, and more.

The expert guides will explain all the volcanic and geological history of the island and give you historical and current information about El Hierro and its population.

To end your day enjoy a snack at a picnic area with palm roofs next to the Mar de Las Calmas maritime park with beautiful views to the south of the island before the approximately 75-minute return journey to the ship.

El Hierro Discovery by E-Bike

Take advantage of this 4-hour scenic family-friendly E-bike tour to admire the scenery of El Hierro Island. The smallest Canary island, which is well-known for its varied landscapes, from a laurel forest to a volcanic desert, it enjoys a great variety of natural spaces.

Electric bikes are an ideal means of transport to discover this spectacular nature and to take you quickly and comfortably to any corner of the island. Climbing a mountain is easily done with engine support.

After meeting with your guide and getting all your equipment ride towards Tamaduste natural pool, one of the privileged places on the coast of Huelva. Perfectly equipped for bathing, in the background, there's the cave of the boats, a dry haven for small boats. After a short stop continues riding to La Caleta; this charming coastal town has seawater pools and access to the ocean. When the sea allows it, this becomes a privileged place for diving and rod fishing.

The last place you will visit is Timijiraque, officially declared as a Protected Natural Space of the Canary Islands. In this place, you will find a virgin landscape, with huge ravines that have hardly been affected by human occupation, with perhaps the best cardinal populations on the island. In addition, you will also have the opportunity to see some plant oddities, such as the bird's tongue. Then return to the ship.

Orientation tour North

Begin this outing by an approximately 45-minute drive towards up to the capital, the Villa de Santa María de Valverde, for a visit to La Peña viewpoint, designed by the famous artist from Lanzarote, Cesar Manrique, from where we will enjoy a magnificent view over the Golfo Valley, the Roques de Salmor and the highest part of the island; Once in the viewpoint enjoy a soft drink or a coffee before continuing the day.

Then, continue your journey through the Nisdafe plateau and the Monteverde forest, going down along the old road that connects Valverde to El Golfo Valley.

After an approximately 60-minute drive, the next stop you will experience is Guinea Eco Museum and the lizard museum, where one of the oldest towns of El Hierro will be visited and get to see the giant lizard, an endemic species of the island. Continue towards the next stop at La Maceta and Las Puntas tide pools where we can see the smallest hotel in the world, overlooking some basaltic molded cliffs by the ocean.

Your return journey to the port will take about 45-minutes through Los Roquillos tunnel and the towns of Barlovento.

Subaquatic Volcanic Reef (1 Tank)

Join us for a recreational diving adventure. Depending on the environmental conditions you will be taken to one dive site or another. With the northeast wind, the diving is done in the marine reserve Mar de las Calmas, where there are eleven different dive sites. This marine reserve is a protected space, with algae of many colors, the "playground" for fish. There are also very impressive volcanic structures such as mountains, lava rivers, and caves.

Departing the pier, after an approximately 60-minute transfer arrives at the La Restinga Dive Center. Receive all necessary gear and safety instructions and cruise will take you out to the diving location. Without wind, the group is brought to a beautiful place in the east. There are steep rocks, less algae but more steep faces and if you are lucky a wahoo fish or hammerhead shark can be seen. In both spots everything there is the opportunity to see from a small to large type of fauna such as crabs, nudibranchs, moray eels, Carmelites, lobsters, green fish, breams, very large groupers, horse mackerels, mouse fish and manta diablo.

During the approximately 60-minute open RIB boat ride - to and from the diving location - your divemasters will tell about the island, the town, and about the marine reserve. The rules of responsible diving are always followed. After the immersion, you will enjoy a snack of fresh fruit, quesadilla and soft drinks before the approximately 60-minute journey back to the ship.
