Silversea Luxury Cruises Nach SOCHI

SOCHI

Sochi is probably most famous for hosting the 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. As the home of the presidential summer residence since the collapse of the Soviet Union the announcement that the city would host the winter Olympics came as a bit of a surprise. But, many world-breaking records later, the infrastructure remains leaving a bubbling, modern, city in its wake. Part of the optimistically named Russian Riviera, this Black Sea resort town 1,000 miles south of Moscow is not only Russia’s busiest seaside town, but certainly its best. View more

The city enjoys the world’s most northernmost sub-tropical climate, making it the darling of the oligarch sun-loving jetset, so expect lots of glamour amid the Empire era architecture. A stroll along the seafront will take you to Winter Theatre square, where you can see the best of Russia’s two faces: beach lovers on one side and mid-18th century opulence on the other. Continue with your sightseeing, ticking off grand buildings (including Stalin’s beautifully kept dasha Zelenaya Roscha) along your way. The region became part of Russia in 1829 after the Caucasian War. After Russia lost its popular Crimean resorts along the coast, Sochi emerged triumphant, fulfilling Stalin’s dream of it becoming the country’s summer capital. The Sochi National Park offers those who like the see the greener side of the city some respite. At almost 2,000 km2 the park offers peace from the busy city with thundering waterfalls, verdant hiding places and curative mineral springs.

Stalin's Dacha

Zelenaya Roscha, translated as 'Green Grove', is comprised of a number of large, private dachas, and served as the site of Stalin's former summer residence. Situated within an old park, the dacha of the 'all nations leader' was built in the 1930s. The interior has been preserved as it was during Stalin's time. During your visit, see the wooden floors, fireplace, private suites, swimming pool, billiard hall, and his wax figure displayed in Stalin's memorial room.

Following the visit you will drive back to the port. En route, view hotels and sanatoria, as well as the Dendrarium covering an area of 30 acres (12 hectares) and containing more than 1500 trees and bushes from all over the world.
