Nanaimo, Traditional Cannon-Firing, Bastion Fort Tour, Dessert Square, Nanaimo Bar

Depart the pier for the short transfer to downtown Nanaimo. Upon arrival, begin your Nanaimo experience with a 'bang'; the traditional, 12-noon cannon-firing on the waterfront. Afterward, take a guided tour of the last remaining Bastion Fort in Canada, built in 1843 by European settlers, then head to Dessert Square to enjoy the famous local dessert, the Nanaimo Bar.


Coal-Mining Site, St. Jeans Cannery, Guided Tour, Tastings of Smoked Salmon & Other Specialities

From here, follow the 'black track' and explore the coal-mining industry during a visit to the last remaining coal-mining site on Vancouver Island, and the St. Jeans Cannery, the largest cannery on the island. Here, all local salmon is processed and smoked for distribution on Vancouver Island. Upon arrival, take a guided tour of the facility to learn about the salmon-canning and distribution processes, and visit the onsite museum. Following your tour, proceed for a tasting of various types of smoked salmon and other specialities from the Salish Sea.


Petroglyph Provincial Park, Nature Walk, Brewery Tour and Tasting, Downtown Area, Shopping

Next, immerse yourself in First Nations History during a visit to the Petroglyph Provincial Park. Upon arrival, take a guided trek up the nature trail en route to the Petroglyphs, where the traditional Hul'q'umi'num language of the Snuneymuxw people connects stories, history and culture. Your final stop is at a local brewery, Farm-to-Foam. During a guided tour of the brewery, learn about the production of this libation, which is brewed utilising locally-grown ingredients, then proceed for a beer tasting accompanied by local, seasonal tapas. At the conclusion of your visit, you may return directly to the pier, or opt to be dropped off in the downtown area for shopping and further exploration, and return to the ship at any time of your choosing via city shuttle; all guests receive a museum pass to discover at leisure.


Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking and standing for approximately 547 yards (about 500 metres), at times over uneven and natural surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, and three-four steps at the Bastion and Cannery entrances. Next, take a guided walking tour of the cranberry farm. Along the way, learn about the development of cranberries from growth-to-harvest, production process and post-harvest processing. Following your tour, proceed for a tasting of a few cranberry products.

Experience the Snuneymuxw First Nations history and culture during this scenic, half-day excursion to Saysutshun (Newcastle Island) via boat, and an interpretive nature walk on the island.


Nanaimo, Ferry Boat-Ride to Saysutshun (Newcastle Island), Swy- a- Lana Lagoon, Nature Walk

Depart the pier with your guide for the transfer to your awaiting ferry-boat, and a short ferry-ride to Saysutshun (Newcastle Island). Upon arrival at the Swy- a- Lana Lagoon shuttle stop, disembark the ferry-boat, meet your Snuneymuxw First Nation guide and begin your scenic, approximately 1.24-mile-1.86-mile (about two kilometres-three kilometres) interpretive nature walk.


Sacred Village Sites, Nature Trails, Native Flora, Bird Species, Deer, Raccoons, Marine Life

For the next 1.5 hours, learn about the sacred village sites, cultural history and traditions of Saysutshun, which have been handed down from generation-to-generation. The nature trails are abundant with native flora unique to the Nanaimo area and east coast of Vancouver Island. Along the way, look for bird species, deer and raccoons, along with seals, otters and other marine life. If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the blonde raccoon, which is only found on Newcastle Island.


Free Time on Newcastle Island, Ferry Boat-Ride, Nanaimo, Optional Shopping in the Downtown Area

Following your walking tour, enjoy some free time on the island with your guide. At the conclusion of your visit, embark the ferry-boat for the short ride back to the Nanaimo. Upon arrival, you may board a city shuttle for the short ride back to the pier, or opt to be dropped off in the downtown area for shopping and further exploration, and return to the ship via city shuttle at any time of your choosing.

Walking at downtown Nanaimo is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with back and/or neck problems, guests with heart and/or respiratory conditions, guests with limited mobility, and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Steam Train & Forest Discovery Centre

Journey through the history of Vancouver Island in a unique new way during this scenic, half-day excursion to an open-air forestry museum, and a ride aboard a vintage steam locomotive.


Nanaimo, Trans-Canada Highway, Farmlands, Forests, Seaside Towns

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 55-minute drive south along Vancouver Island's Trans-Canada Highway, the world's longest national highway. Pass by farmlands, forests and seaside towns en route to the BC Forest Discovery Centre.


BC Forest Discovery Centre, Train-Ride aboard a Vintage Locomotive

The BC Forest Discovery Centre is an approximately 100-acre (about 40.5-hectare) open-air museum dedicated to preserving BC's long history of forestry. Upon arrival, board a vintage 1910 steam locomotive for a picturesque train-ride along a narrow-gauge railway that traverses the centre's logger's camp, apple orchard and forest, and crosses over a trestle bridge on Somenos Lake.


Guided Tour of the Logging Camp Houses, Machinery Displays and a Live Demonstration

Following your train-ride, take a guided walking tour of the logging camp houses. Along the way, view the numerous pieces of machinery used through the years, from manual, two-man saws and early chainsaws to everything from classic trucks and locomotives to massive logging vehicles; view a live demonstration at one of these sites. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 50-minute drive back to the pier.
