HEIMAEY (Westman Islands)

It’s hard to imagine, as you stroll Heimaey’s idyllic streets of white wooden houses, that this island was literally torn apart by a spectacular volcanic eruption, just over 40 years ago. The fact that you can visit incredible Heimaey at all is something of a miracle – because the oozing lava of the Eldfell volcano threatened to seal the harbour off completely. Fortunately, its advance was halted by gallons of seawater, pumped onto it by the plucky islanders, who saved their fishing industry in the process. View more

Iceland's famous for its scenery, and the huge castles of volcanic rock that rise out of the sea's waves here are some of the country's most dramatic.

Experience the caves, islets and rock formations of the Vestmannaeyjar Archipelago in an exciting new way during this panoramic, fun-filled RIB-boat excursion.

Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar Archipelago, Surtsey Island, Helgafell and Eldfell Volcanoes

Depart the pier for the short walk to your awaiting rigid-inflatable boat. Upon arrival, receive your safety and riding instructions, then don your flotation suits and life vests before setting out on your RIB-boat safari.

Fast, fun and agile RIB safari boats have opened up new and exciting travel possibilities, especially here in the Vestamannaeyjar (Western Islands), where boats sail from Heimey Island on exploratory journeys of mysterious caves and small islets. Vestmannaeyjar is an archipelago off Iceland's south coast, and was formed by underwater volcanic eruptions. The youngest island, Surtsey, was formed in 1963. Heimaey is the largest and only inhabited island. It has two volcanoes, Helgafell and Eldfell.

Your RIB boat also ventures into some smaller caves, such as the Eider Duck Cave, whose name derives from a nearby eider duck colony. Next, visit a huge and extremely deep cave, where beautiful basalt columns decorate the walls. The cave was named after the terrifying Norse God of the Sea, Ægir. Close by is a small cave where the sunlight shines through, creating a mesmerising interplay of light and water. A final visit is made to the roomy Klettahellir (Cliff Cave), which has excellent acoustics.

Walking Tour and Lava Field Tour Duration

Skansinn

The walking tour begins at the naturally formed harbour which was almost destroyed in the massive eruption on the island in 1973. After a short walk we'll reach "Skansinn", a replica of the old fort built by orders of the Danish king in the 17th century to protect the islands from theft and foreign trade. From there guests walk up a small hill and over the new lava that was formed in the dramatic eruption in 1973.

Eldfell, Volcanic Eruption, Lava and Ash

Guests will continue the walk up the hill and over the newly formed lava fields of Eldfell ('Fire Mountain'). It was the site of the dramatic volcanic eruption that started in the middle of the night on an otherwise typical day. The eruption forced almost all the 5,000 inhabitants to be swiftly evacuated to the mainland while hundreds of houses were buried under lava and ash. Guests will walk along the edge of the lava field where they will have a great view over the small town, and a clear view of the remains of the houses buried during the eruption.

We'll then walk through town and return to the pier and your ship.
