Silversea Luxury Cruises Nach FLAM

FLAM

If we haven’t said it already, Norway’s luxury is its sheer natural beauty. And at the very top of the pile is the all-inclusive Flam, a destination that is home to Glacial waterways lined by evergreen forests amidst jagged mountains and sheer cliff walls. Situated inland, on the arm of the 204-kilometre Sognefjord, the village has just 400 inhabitants. Its little size does not belie its gigantic heart, and Flam’s expansive loveliness knows no bounds. View more

In fact, UNESCO has dedicated the Sognefjord as a World Heritage Site for its exquisite natural beauty. There are many ways to imbibe in the beauty of this destination. Some of the more peaceful among you will enjoy just drinking it all in from the veranda or deck of your ship, while adrenaline bunnies will most probably want to jump in a Zodiac and gain first-hand experience that way. But beware! Travelling the shores of one of the deepest fjords may be exciting but it is also fast, wet and bumpy! Most visitors will not want to miss out on a one-hour train journey that has been describes by more than one source as being “the world’s most beautiful”. The Flam railway is iconic and will have you holding your breath as your travel through steep, winding roads, around massive mountains, and past gushing rivers and waterfalls. Scary? A little. Picturesque? No question. Worth it? Most definitely.

Fjord Safari by RIB boat

Travel the path of the Norse gods on this fast and exciting ride through the Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord, two branches of Sognefjord, one of the world's longest and deepest fjords that is filled with the most iconic, majestic scenery imaginable. This trip is for physically fit guests only who are ready to sustain a fast and bumpy boat ride.

RIB Boat Ride

Today's short excursion (just 2 hours in total) is a chance to race through the awe-inspiring Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord at a breathtaking pace for the full 90 action-packed minutes of your ride. Arrive at the landing stage for your Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB Boat) to receive a safety briefing on your boat and be fitted with a life vest and survival suit.

Aurlandsfjord

The first arm of the Sognefjord you travel through is the Aurlandsfjord , which stretches 17km, beginning in the village of Flam and ending at Mount Beitelen. This wide branch of the main fjord offers spectacular views of snow-covered peaks, waterfalls and farms that appear the same as they have for centuries or more.

Nærøyfjord

The Aurlandsfjord gives way to the Nærøyfjord, named for the Norse god "Njord," the God of the Seafarer and the sea. UNESCO has dedicated this arm of the Sognefjord as a World Heritage Site for its exquisite natural beauty. Glacial lakes surround evergreen forests amidst jagged mountains and sheer cliff walls. Speed along past waterfalls and free-flowing rivers that cross the fjord, spotting marine mammals along the way.

Your crew plan to make many stops along the way to discover the natural beauty, culture and history of this striking region. At the conclusion of your thrilling ride, make your way back to the pier.

Flåm Railway & Coffee Break at Vatnahalsen

Embrace the exquisite natural beauty that Flåm has to offer with its environs from a unique new perspective during this panoramic, half-day excursion aboard the Flåm Railroad.

Scenic Train Ride

Depart the pier for a short 984-foot (about 300-metre) walk to the Flåm Railway Station. The Flåm Railroad measures 12.4 miles (20 kilometres) in length, and ascends to the 2,844 foot-high (867-metre-high) Myrdal Station. After boarding the train, take a one-hour ride along the Flåm River. See the Rjoande Waterfall, which cascades down 459 feet (140 metres), and the impressive peak of Vidmesnosi, which rises to a height of 4,163 feet (1,269 metres).

Naali Tunnel & Myrdalsberg

Next, pass through the longest tunnel at Naali, then the climb of 984-foot-high (300 metre-high) Myrdalsberg. In order to ascend it, the line is built on four levels. From here, you can view three of them, with the train standing on the fourth. Enjoy the sights of the old road constructed in 1895-96 in connection with the building of the Bergen Oslo Railroad that opened in 1909. The road ascends the steep hills in 21 narrow hairpin bends with a lovely waterfall adjacent to it.

Kjosfossen Waterfall & Vatnahalsen

A brief photo stop is made at the 305-foot-high (93-metre-high) Kjosfossen Waterfall. En route, the train slows down at the most scenic viewpoints. Upon arrival in Vatnahalsen, disembark the train for an 80-minute stay at the Vatnahalsen Hotel and grounds. Walk around the hotel, takes some photos and savour some coffee, tea and waffles inside.

Following your visit, re-board the train for the return ride to the Flåm Railway Station, then commence the approximate 984-foot (about 300-metre) walk back to the pier.

The Flåm Railroad route is approximately 12.4 miles (about 20 kilometres) in length, and ascends to the 2,844 foot-high (867-metre-high) Myrdal Station. During your approximately one-hour journey, take in breath-taking vistas as you ride steep, winding roads around massive mountains, through tunnels with a total distance of approximately four miles (about 6.5-kilometres), on the edge of precipices, and past gushing rivers and waterfalls.

Bergen Railway, Voss, Lunch and Tvindefossen Waterfall

Upon arrival at Myrdal Station, embark on one of the world's most unique and spectacular journeys aboard the Bergen Railway, which connects Bergen with the capital, Oslo. Marvel at the magnificent panoramic vistas during the approximately one-hour ride to Voss. Upon arrival, proceed for a Norwegian buffet lunch at a leading hotel. After lunch, some free time is made available to explore Voss City at your leisure before boarding a coach for the drive to the Tvindefossen Waterfall. A brief photo stop is made here to marvel at this stunning natural wonder, which cascades down the mountainside.

Stalheim Road

Next, re-board your coach and drive down the famous Stalheimskleivene. Norway's steepest road, it includes 13 hairpin bends and offers outstanding views of the waterfalls that plunge down both sides of the road. Upon reaching the valley floor, follow the Nærøy River back towards Flam.

Nærøyfjord Cruise & Gudvangen

Embark on a scenic journey by land and water through fjords, as well as charming Nordic towns and stunning panoramic views as you drive to the Stegastein viewpoint. Begin with a cruise of the majestic Nærøyfjord, a branch off of Sognefjord, one of the world's longest and deepest fjords that is filled with the most impressive scenery imaginable.

UNESCO has dedicated the Sognefjord as a World Heritage Site for its exquisite natural beauty. Glacial waterways are lined by evergreen forests amidst jagged mountains and sheer cliff walls. Speed along past waterfalls, spotting marine mammals along the way. Nærøyfjord, named for the Norse god "Njord," the God of the Seafarer and the sea.

Transfer to your watercraft and receive a safety briefing before heading out for your fjord cruise. Your watercraft is named "Vision of the Fjords" and was designed especially for traveling these picturesque fjords in comfort and warmth. Sit back and relax in the heated cabin or step out on deck to get a better view of the snow-covered mountains that tower 1,800 metres above sea-level.

Arrive in Gudvangen and transfer to a coach for a scenic drive via Flåm and Aurland. Drive through a network of tunnels and then alongside the imposing fjords, winding your way to the Stegastein viewpoint for an incredible, panoramic vista all around, and own at the charming village of Aurland 650 metres below you.

Please note: This tour involves little walking, just 200 meters total entering and exiting the coach. There are three steps to enter the coach but walking is over paved surfaces; if guests in wheelchairs can manage these steps with a travel companion then the rest of this tour is suitable for them. Please also note that there is no wheelchair lift in the coach. Those prone to motion sickness may not want to participate as there is a sharply curvy road to the Stegastein viewpoint that is travelled by coach, as well as two tunnels over 20 km. There is no age restriction provided children are accompanied by a guardian. Wear comfortable clothes, walking shoes and bring a camera. Please note that the boat is not exclusive to Silversea guests only.

However, your current route takes you through the tunnels that pass underneath the mountain. Leaving the tunnels, continue along the road leading to Voss and Bergen. From here, pass by beautiful Oppheim Lake, then through woodlands and green farmland before approaching the spectacular Tvinde Waterfall. Upon arrival, take a short stroll amidst the fresh air for a closer look at the falls, which cascade down the mountainside. Afterward, re-board your coach and head back towards the Stalheim Hotel, which is perched on a cliff overlooking the Nærøy Valley.

Stalheim Hotel and Museum, and Stalheim and Sivle Falls

After refreshments served at the hotel, head to the terrace for splendid panoramic vistas overlooking the valley, or browse the hotel's shop and many antiques on display. Some time is also made available to explore the owner's open-air museum, which consists of 25 16th- and 17th-century farm buildings gathered from various parts of the country, as well as the stately, beautifully-furnished Lekve House (comment. It will be a guided walk with visit to some houses, guests can not visit the houses themselves). Following your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier. En route, drive down Norway's steepest road, which has 13 hairpin turns, to the valley below. Waterfalls plunge down both sides of the road; the Stalheim-fall is to the right, and Sivle-fall to the left. Upon reaching the valley floor, follow the Nærøy River back towards Gudvangen, then through the tunnels to Flåm.

Stegastein Viewpoint - back to Gudvangen

The new award winning viewpoint platform offers a dizzying view of the Aurlandsfjord and the surrounding fjord landscape. The platform projects out 30 meters into the air, 650 above the seal level. Take a walk on the viewpoint platform and experience the fantastic feeling of being several hundred meters above the fjord.

The installation expresses the architects' desire to lift the visitors out into open space, and thereby enhance the experience of the panoramic view over this unique fjord landscape.

This project is part of a national program on tourist routes commissioned by the Norwegian Highway Department and was completed in 2006. The architects are Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen.

You then return back along the fjord to Gudvangen (approx1 hr and 15 min drive) and will make a short photo stop before arriving to the ship in Gudvangen
