DA NANG

Halfway between Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An, Da Nang often gets overlooked on the traveller trail. However, as the third largest city in Vietnam (with a population of 1 million), Da Nang packs a punch that other puts other Vietnamese cities in the shade. Naturally, Da Nang is a savvy choice. The beaches are simply stunning - white sand that runs on for miles, lapped by sapphire seas and punctuated by tall coconut trees. View more

The mountains are stunning – vast swathes of emerald green poking out of the top of the few skyscrapers the city has. And the temples are vast and plentiful. From Lady Buddha – an 18th century shrine and statue that guards over the fishermen – to the Marble Mountains, Da Nang is a sublime mixture of secret lagoons, spiritual sites and Vietnamese energy. The aforementioned Marble Mountains are undeniably the city’s main attraction, although the Golden Hands Bridge (40 kilometres from the city centre) is fast overtaking the Mountains for top spot. Both are sublime in their beauty – one a spiritual pilgrimage site sculpted by (and named after) the elements, the other, a man-made structure of two giant concrete hands that stretch towards the sky. Add to that the busy markets selling everything from Vietnamese silk to street food and the My Son temple ruins (Vietnam’s answer to Angkor Wat) and you have a destination that offers travellers far more than tourist trinkets. If you are looking for a Vietnamese city that offers both connection and authenticity, you have found it in Da Nang.

Marble Mountain & Beach

Explore historic Marble Beach and neighbouring Marble Mountain on this half-day orientation outside of Da Nang.

Board the coach and depart from the pier for the drive towards China Beach.

Marble Mountain

King Minh Mang in 1837 named the mountains of Ngu Hanh after the five basic elements of the universe: Kim mountain (metal); Moc mountain (wood); Thuy mountain (water); Tho mountain (earth); Hoa mountain (Fire); (Hoa mountain consist of two peaks). The coach takes you to Kim Mountain to view the Goddess of Mercy or Quan The Am Pagoda. Then, proceed to Marble Mountain Village. Here, thousands of stone statues have been created by the skilful hands of the area's talented workers. Most marble is transported here from Thanh Hoa province. Of particular note are the different coloured pieces, very interesting to most stone lovers.

Marble Beach

The sandy Marble Beach is more than 25 miles (40 kilometers) long. During the Vietnam War, American Marines and South Korean troops used this area as a basecamp. Since then, many famous resorts have been built along the beach. Sip a local drink, relax, enjoy the sea breeze, sun and sand. If you feel adventurous, climb the nearby mountain with more than 100 steps to see both the area pagoda and caverns, or just to admire the view of Da Nang and Marble Beach.

Afterwards, re-board the coach for an orientation drive via the main street, before heading back to the ship in port.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking with steps if you wish to climb the mountain; otherwise, the walking required is very moderate and at each guest's discretion. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility. Order of sites seen or visited may vary.
