Located on the Adriatic Sea, Ancona is the main town of the Marche region of Italy on the Adriatic Sea. Founded by Syracusian colonists about 390 BC, it was conquered by Rome in the 2nd century BC. Attacked by Goths, Lombards and Saracens, the city declined but recovered its importance in the Middle Ages. The city came under direct papal rule in 1532, which continued until Ancona became part of Italy in 1860. View more
