Silversea Expedition Cruises A PORT ELIZABETH

PORT ELIZABETH
PORT ELIZABETH
PORT ELIZABETH

Port Elizabeth, or PE is an uncut gem of a destination. Loved by wealthy South African families as a holiday destination, it is a city has of faces. One: a natural haven with unspoiled beaches, rolling sand dunes and the warm Indian Ocean lapping at your feet and two: a post-industrial migrant city with a rich heritage. View more

PE is also called Nelson Mandela Bay, and there is much here that celebrates him – starting with Route 67, a collection of 67 artworks honouring the 67 years that Mandela dedicated to achieving South Africa’s freedom. Known as “the friendly city”, Port Elizabeth is enjoying an urban regeneration, spurred on by the youth of the region that want to put it (back) on the map. Think vibrant creative projects spilling out wherever you go; a pedestrianised central zone, galleries selling local artworks, restaurants serving South African fusion food, award-winning buildings that house museums, restored Victorian terraces. Unsurprisingly, the boardwalk is buzzing. PE’s proximity to the excellent nature parks at Addo and Lalibela make it an ideal destination for game lovers. Both of these parks are a little way from PE (70 and 90 kilometres east respectively) but both offer a chance to revel in South Africa’s no holds barred natural beauty. This is the real reason why people come to South Africa – for a chance to see the fabled Big Five. Addo even boasts the Big Seven (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard, as well as the great white shark and Southern right whale).

Excursiones en PORT ELIZABETH

Addo Elephant Park by 4x4

Depart from the quayside and cross the Swartkops River. Turn inland to the flat valley of the Sunday's River and arrive at the Addo Elephant Park, about 45 miles (75 km) from the port.

The Addo Elephant Park, which consists of over 126,000 acres (51,000 hectares) of bush country, is the home to some 450 elephants that have bred from the few that remained in the area after the herd was almost wiped out by the hired game hunter Major P.J. Pretorius in the 1920s. Although it belongs to the same species as the African Elephant, the reddish Addo Elephant is smaller with more rounded ears, while the females generally have no tusks.

On your 2-hour game drive through the park by open vehicle**, you will likely encounter this rare animal, as well as a variety of other game, which was recently introduced to the reserve. This includes lion, hyena, cheetah, zebra, eland, kudu and red hartebeest. Also quite notable is the unique flightless dung beetle, which is found almost exclusively in Addo.

After your game drive, return to the main reception area of the Addo Elephant Park where facilities and a curio shop are available for your perusal.

** Capacity for each safari vehicle varies depending on vehicle availability. Silversea cannot guarantee all guests travelling together will be in the same safari vehicle however we will do our utmost to accomodate. A refund will not be provided to those who choose not to participate in the tour if they are split.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking. Guest must be able to climb into 4X4 open vehicles. Comfortable clothing, binoculars and a sun hat are strongly recommended. For safety reasons, no children under the age of 6 years are allowed on the open vehicles. No food may be taken into the reserve in the open vehicles. Guests are not permitted to use cellular phones during the game drives. They are also not permitted to speak loudly or stand up on the game drive vehicles, as this will disturb the animals. The drive maybe very bumpy with dips in the road; please be sure to hang on to your possessions. Smoking is not permitted during the game-drives. The spotting of wildlife cannot be guaranteed.

Hluhluwe & St Lucia Tour

Depart from the quayside in Richard's Bay and head to St Lucia Wetlands.

Upon arrival to St. Lucia, you will have a brief comfort stop before boarding your boat for a 2-hour leisurely nature cruise on Lake St Lucia.

The lake is dotted with marshy, sandbank-islands which are home to thousands of birds with over 526 different bird species that can be found in the St Lucia Wetlands Reserve. The echo of the fish eagle's haunting cry can be heard while you view the basking and nesting sites of the Nile crocodile and the hundreds of hippos that make their homes in the estuary; the greatest occurrence of both crocodile and hippo in southern Africa.

Following your cruise on Lake St. Lucia, re-embark your vehicle and transfer to Memorial Gate, the entrance to the Hluhluwe / Umfolozi Game Reserve.

Enjoy a scrumptious picnic lunch on arrival followed by an open vehicle game drive in the Hluhluwe Reserve.

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi is the oldest game reserve in all of Africa. Set in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal the park offers its visitors an array of activities and opportunities; from open vehicle game drives and self guided walks, to trails and picnic spots with magnificent views. Waterholes are dotted all over the camp for guaranteed wildlife spotting at close range. The park extends itself over 96,000 ha, has an immense variety of flora and fauna and is hugely popular not only for its "Big Five" but for the vast bird life with more than 300 species existing within the reserve.

Zulu kings such as Dingiswayo and Shaka hunted and put in place the first conservation laws, where today the "Big Five" of African legend stalk the verdant savannah. As the home of Operation Rhino in the 1950s and 60s, the Park became world renowned for its white rhino conservation. In addition to rhino, the reserve has a spectacular variety of bird and animal life, including elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, blue wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, cheetah, mountain reedbuck, kudu and warthog. During our open-vehicle game drive, we hope to encounter many of these beautiful animals close up.

End your game drive and transfer back to the quayside in Richards Bay.

Lalibela Day Safari

Depart for Lalibela Private Game Reserve, situated 90 km from Port Elizabeth, one of South Africa's major cities and affectionately known as 'The Friendly City'. The Eastern Cape is rich in ethnic culture and diversity and offers the traveller a unique wildlife experience in a malaria free environment.

Upon arrival at the Day Visitor's Centre, you will transfer over into 4x4 vehicles.

Depart on a 3-hour game drive in open vehicles, traversing the reserve, where the wildlife roams in profusion and diversity.

The game drive brings you face to face with a multitude of game species, ranging from the mighty "Big 5", to the tiny blue duiker and rock hyrax. Lalibela is also home to hippo, giraffe, zebra, warthog and numerous species of antelope such as eland, kudu, bushbuck and wildebeest. Hopefully, you will encounter a variety of wildlife on your game drive.

Return to the Day Visitors' Centre for a buffet lunch.

After this exciting day, depart the reserve and return to the quayside in Port Elizabeth.

Depart from the quayside and make your way to the Algoa Bay Yacht Club where you will meet the boat taking you on your cruise.

The tour will start off with a harbour cruise and a full safety briefing, after which you will exit the port and set course for the island. This island is home to the largest breeding colony of African penguins on the planet and funds raised through the cruise are used to assist Dr Lorien Pichegru who is conducting groundbreaking research on the serious decline of these penguins along our coast.

This conservation friendly tour raises funds through the cruise to secure Dr Lorien Pichegru and her team of researchers to continue the ongoing Penguin research in the area.

Besides the penguins you can also encounter schools of Bottlenose dolphins in groups. The Common dolphin as well as Humpback can also be spotted, but they tend to be either further out to sea or closer inshore. Migratory whales are seen from June until December while the resident Bryde's whale can be seen throughout the year although it is very elusive, being seen only fleetingly.

A refreshment stop just off St Croix Island Group will be made - which is home to about 20 000 African Penguins, making it the largest breeding colony on the planet. Gannets and other sea birds may also be seen on this 25km trip to the island.

Make your way back to the Algoa Bay Yacht Club, and after disembarking the boat make your way back to the cruise ship.

Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.
