Nanaimo is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, about 70.2 miles (113 kilometres) northwest of Victoria and 34.1 miles (55 kilometres) west of Vancouver. Authentic Nanaimo

Experience authentic Nanaimo through the eyes of your local Nanaimo guide. Discovering Nanaimo's downtown and city culture, history, industry, past & present and everyday life on the Island. Start your experience with a "Bang", the 12 noon traditional cannon firing on the waterfront. Followed by guided tour of the onsite last remaining Bastion Fort in Canada built in 1843 when European Settlement was established, taste the famous Nanaimo Dessert Bars. Follow the Black Track- discover the Coal mining industry, including visiting the last standing coal mining site on Vancouver Island. Enjoying the many local tastes of Nanaimo, visit St Jeans cannery, where all local salmon is processed and smoked all over Vancouver Island. The canning distribution and museum followed with many samples of various styles of smoked salmon and other select species of the Salish Sea. Amerce yourself in First Nations History at Petroglyph Provincial Park, walking up the nature trail to the Petroglyphs. The traditional Hul'q'umi'num language of the Snuneymuxw people given to a place which connects stories, history and culture. Concluding at a Local Brewery, Farm to Foam locally produced grown ingredients for a true Island product, tour the brewery and finish with a few cheers and local seasonal tapas. Optional guest drop off available downtown prior to returning to pier.

Saysutshun Interpretive Nature Walk

Experience Snuneymuxw First Nations History and Culture on Saysutshun (Newcastle Island) for an interpretive nature walking tour of the Island. Meet your guide at the pier end embark on the City shuttle to Swy- A- Lana Lagoon. Walk the Lagoon and waterfront to the Ferry terminal to the Island. Arriving at Saysutshun an experienced Snuneymuxw First Nation Nature tour guide will greet you and lead you on an 1.5 hour nature walk on Saysutshun Newcastle Island learning of sacred village sites, traditions, and cultural history of Saysutshun, handed down generation to generation. The nature trails are abundant with native flora unique to the Nanaimo area and East Coast of Vancouver Island. The floras you may see are: Birds, Deer, raccoons, possible sea life seal's and otters. The local very unique animal is the Blonde raccoon, only found on Newcastle Island. Following your walking tour enjoy some free time on the Island. Return by ferry to Nanaimo and shuttle back to ship or enjoy downtown at your leisure.


Please note: this tour involve an extensive amount of walking for appoximately 2.5 km (1.5 miles) over unpaved, Nature Trails. Minimum age is 8 year. Guests are required to sign a waiver. The local Ferry is not exclusive to Silversea guests.

Steam Train & Forest Discovery Centre

Begin your scenic journey with a drive south on Vancouver Island, on the Trans-Canada Highway, the world's longest national highway, passing farmlands, forests and seaside towns. Your destination will be the BC Forest Discovery Centre, a 100-acre open-air museum dedicated to preserving BC's long history of forestry. Here you will get to enjoy a train ride pulled by a 1910 Steam Locomotive along a narrow-guage railway that traverses the centre's logger's camp, apple orchard, forest and over a trestle bridge on Somenos Lake. Continue with a guided walking tour where you'll have a chance to visit the logging camp houses and view the numerous pieces of machinery used through the years, from manual two-man saws and early chainsaws to classic trucks, locomotives and all the way up to massive logging vehicles, and enjoy a live demonstration at one of these sites.


Please Note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking mostly over level but sometimes ove uneven terrain, gravel, grass, with some steps and standing involved. It is suitable for guests with limited mobility but not recommended for guests utilising a wheelchair. Order of tour may vary. Guests are encouraged to carry a reusable water bottle whilst on an excursion in order to avoid excessive plastic.
