Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha Temple)

Located off the northern shore of Ko Samui, on a small rocky island connected by a causeway, stands the 'Temple of the Big Buddha', or Wat Phra Yai. The temple is a popular site; its 36 -foot (11-metre)-high statue provides an impressive silhouette against the sea and sky. Surrounding the Buddha image are kutis or meditation huts. Although the monks welcome visitors, a sign requests that proper attire be worn on the temple premises.


Plai Leam Temple

Built in 2004, this very ornate temple follows in the tradition of temple art, dating back centuries and provides a good example of the influence and style that are still significant in modern Thai religious architecture. The elaborate entry doors were made from two enormous slabs of Laotian hardwood and are intricately carved with images of the life of the Buddha. The highlight is the big statue of the Goddess of Mercy which is housed elegantly outside the shrine in the temple compound.

Guan Yu Shrine

The Chinese have a long history on Ko Samui, with the first immigrants arriving from Hainan in the late Ayutthaya era.In 1872, a small shrine was built, dedicated to Guan Yu, a legendary warrior who died almost 2,000 years ago. His statue was built in 2008.The interior is decorated with golden murals featuring Chinese calligraphy, fabulous dragons, photos of the pioneers and other assorted images.


A photo stop is made at local restaurant overlooking turquoise water of Chaweng Bay, a drink included choice of soft drink or local beer.
