Silversea Luxury Cruises A ILE ROUSSE CORSICA

ILE ROUSSE CORSICA

Facing up invitingly towards the French Riviera, from the north face of Corsica, Ile Rousse is a favourite destination for tripping yachts and holidaymakers from the French mainland. Set close to one of Europe's only deserts, explore a surprisingly abundant island landscape of fertile olive groves, craggy coastline, and vineyards producing Corsica's renowned wines. Known as the red island, picking up its name from the rosy hint to the pink granite rocks, which explode with vibrant hues as sunset's fiery light washes across them. View more

A small bridge leads out to the island outcrop of Ile de la Pietra, which is surrounded by deep, blue water and adorned with a little lighthouse and Genoese watchtower. It offers views of Île de Broccio's rusty-coloured rock hump, rising from the waves. The sharp smells of mature cheese drift down the narrow streets of the old town – with names devoted to iconic Corsicans like Napoleon and Pascal Paoli. Practically every household here produces their own variations of sheep and goats milk cheese, along with chestnut-gorged hams, and oils squeezed from the juiciest of olives. Taste the best local food, inside the columns of the covered market of the central plaza - along with handfuls of fresh honey and nuts. Spacious sandy beaches provide the luxurious facilities should you wish to bronze below the warm Mediterranean sun, while the Botanical Garden adds a splash of colour to this rusty-red landscape.

Calvi Walking Tour

Enjoy a 90-minute walking tour of the picturesque, historic town of Calvi, a beautiful place on Corsica's northwestern coast. Perched over a crescent-shaped bay with stunning views, this town that began as a medieval citadel is offers inspiring views from its restaurants that line the harbor.

Citadel

Depart the Pier for an appriximate 45 minutes-drive to Calvi and begin your exploration on foot to the citadel and learn about how Calvi got its name. The name Calvi is rooted in the Latin word calvus, meaning "bald," named so for the tree-less, bare terrain on which the citadel was established. Built in the 13th century, this impressive structure is a major historic landmark that also offers panoramic views from its hilltop setting.

Cathedral St Jean Baptiste

Proceed next to the main square of Place d'Armes, where the Cathedral St Jean Baptiste looms prominently and impressively. While the cathedral was built and founded in the 13th century, it was destroyed in part by the Turks in 1553. When it was rebuilt, it was made in the form of the Greek cross.

Christopher Columbus Birthplace

Next visit the home believed to be that of the town's most famous resident, Christopher Columbus. While the house was destroyed by Nelson's troops in the 1794 siege; a statue remains to declare the relative significance of this site.

Other Key Sites and Free Time

Walk to the the former Governor's Palace, Caserne Sampiero, and then onto the Oratoire St Antoine, resplendent with ornate Italian frescoes. Your tour ends with a refreshment stop to enjoy a soft drink accompanied with the local biscuit "Canistrello" followed by some time left to enjoy Calvi on your own by visiting the vibrant, busy Quay Landry area of Calvi or relaxing at the charming harbor watching the local activity.

After free time commence your 45-minutes drive back to the pier.

Ile Rousse Taste and Market

Enjoy the charming coastal Ile Rousse, which translates to "Red Island" and is a favorite of tourists due to its charming history and stunning natural setting. Also called L'Ille-Rouse, it is was founded in 1758 by Pasquale Paoli, though the site has evidence as being inhabited as an active town as early as 1000 BC. In fact, archeological digs suggest that the main peninsula was even populated in the Neolithic period (5000 BC)!

Walking Tour of Old Town

For today's half-day tour, meet your guide for a walking tour of Ille Rousse's lovely sights, winding your way through the photogenic Old Town. Stroll the historic streets named after Pascal Paoli, Napoleon and Louis Philippe around the sumptuous main square, Place Paoli, shaded by old plane trees.

Market Tasting

After your 1.5-km walking tour, make your way to the Ile Rouse Market, led by your local guide who can point you to the best Corsican products and point out their unique qualities different from other French cuisine. Taste the delightfully flavored gourmet products in the covered market, which was built by the Mayor Piccioni in 1844. The market is made of 21 pillars, appearing as a classical temple, which gave the market its status of a historic monument in 1993.

Refreshment and Free Time in Pascal Paoli Square

Next visit the Pascal Paoli square and enjoy some refreshments. The life of this small city organizes itself around this square named after one of the Founding Fathers of Corsica, lesser known than Napoleon but nonetheless as important in Corsican History. Enjoy some free time on your own before returning to the ship.

Old Villages of Corsica

Enjoy half a day touring some of the most exquisitely picturesque cliffside villages of Corsica, taking in the charm, history and ambiance of these places where time seems to stop. See medieval buildings in various stages of use and ruin, from vibrant cliffside towns to ancient churches. Departing the pier, drive half an hour through the untamed scenery of the rural Balagne region on a scenic coastal road.

Panoramic of Lumio and Cateri

Drive through the village of Lumio. Built into the steep hillside overlooking Golfe Calvi. The town offers much more charm, with its ancient buildings still intact dating as far back as the 11th century and full of history. Please note that depending on conditions and traffic, the route may change.

From Lumio, you'll continue to a narrow, winding road through the interior of Corsica to the classic villages that have been here for hundreds of years (over a thousand in some cases). Arrive in Cateri, which means "portals," perhaps referring to the many doorways to history this interesting village offers. Drive past ancient granite houses and the Santa Maria Assunta Church, a convent built on ruins from the 10th century. The church interestingly has Baroque and 20th century elements that create a unique blend of history and culture possible only in a place like Corsica.

Sant'Antonino

Next, pass by Col de Salvi with its flowered balconies, en route to Sant'Antonino. Referred to as one of the most beautiful places in northern Corsica, Sant'Antonio is particularly lovely, with its grand medieval hilltop setting, stone archways and gorgeous, wild gardens. Visit the village and then continue your drive past the interesting Church of Aregno with its multi-coloured walls and unique sculptures.

Pigna

Your last stop is in the tiny and even more ancient village of Pigna, founded in 862. Pigna is named for a region of Rome from which came Lieutenant Consalvo came, sent by the pope in the 9th century. Take time to appreciate the unique houses in gold with their azure shutters. Stop to enjoy a refreshment before making the 30-minute return drive to the pier.

Saleccia Botanical Park

Equal parts manicured and rugged, the awe-inspiring Saleccia Botanical Park is a jewel of Corsica. Stretching over 17 acres on an estate that covers 200 acres, the park offers a quintessentially Mediterranean experience that combines the simple beauty of nature with the ingenious design that only highlights the natural setting. Learn of the mythical significance and traditional culinary and medicinal uses of hundreds of plants and herbs as you walk on your own time in this spectacular place.

Drive just 20 minutes from port to arrive at Saleccia Botanical Park, where you have over two hours to visit the park and enjoy time at leisure. This park is set amidst the mountainous hills of Corsica and highlights the island's natural endemic plants to the island, as well as other Mediterranean botanical specimens: oleanders, cypress, and old-fashioned roses. All of these are planted on the grounds of an ancient agricultural estate, for a unique experience for you to enjoy today.

There are several walks you can choose to take:

Maquis Walk

Features a winding path through scented trees including myrtle, cypress and other varieties, as well as arbutus trees.

Olive Grove

See over a hundred varieties of olive trees originating from over 15 countries. The olive trees in this grove were grafted with over a hundred species from all over Corsica, but also continental France, Italy, Spain, Greece and Morocco. Alongside the olive trees are many other trees, including fig, bay, almonds, grenadines and juniper.

Mediterranean Garden

An array of decorative and scented Mediterranean plants.

Romantic Path

Three hundred bushes of old-fashioned roses in many different colours and includes hybrid roses created by landscape designer Bruno Demoustier.

Wild Plant Walk

Many native plants here that explain why Corsica is referred to as "the scented isle." See an array of herbs in their natural habitate, including rosemary, thyme, curry plant, euphorbia and spurge.

In 1974 the gardens were nearly completely destroyed by fire, with all but a dozen of the ancient olive trees taken. The landscape designer Bruno Demoustier rehabilitated the park and designed a magnificent arboretum and botanical garden.

After your visit enjoy a juice or a tea before commencing the return drive to the pier.
