Silversea Luxury Cruises A HARSTAD

597675662

Superbly located on Norway’s biggest island Hinnøya, Harstad is a perfect illustration of what makes Norway famous. Spectacular scenery, powerful, raw beauty, long summer days and endless white nights are par for the course here, not to mention clear fjordic waters teeming with marine life. The town is perhaps less well known than its big sister Tomso, but this only works in little Harstad’s favour. View more

In fact, it is said the most romantic place in all of Noway to see the Midnight Sun dipping behind the horizon is from Harstad’s Nupen mountain. Harstard’s stunning shores and rugged landscape are certainly it biggest claim to fame, and those who want to imbibe in it to the fullest aboard an RIB or kayak will uncover Mother Nature at her very best. Mile after mile of soaring mountain peaks, hidden tranquil coves, and fine white beaches are just the beginning. However, you might find that you’ll have to share your journey with white-tailed eagles spiralling high overhead and friendly dolphins and seals, bobbing alongside you. While Harstad’s natural landscape is undeniably magnetic, there is much to do for history buffs. The cultural landscape includes Trondenes Middle Ages visitor park, a quirky step back to the past, where actors propel you back to farm life in the 13th century. There is also the local church (aka the world’ most northerly medieval building), the historical centre, the boathouses and 2000 year old burial mounds for those who want superb examples of Harstad’s history and Viking roots.

Excursiones en HARSTAD

Hiking Mount Aun

Enjoy magnificent views over Kasfjord and Andfjorden from the top of Mount Aun, and relax by an open fire while being treated to some tasty Norwegian snacks.

Mount Aun, Keipen Lake, refreshments, Keipen Summit

Heading northwest of Hardstad you will arrive at the trailhead of Mount Aun. The beginning of the trail may be a bit wet, but eventually you reach rolling birch ground and other varied terrain. Near the idyllic Keipen Lake you will make a stop for coffee and traditional lefse. Continuing on to the top you will appreciate fantastic views at the summit of Keipen. There is a panoramic view towards Kasfjord, and Skjærstad on the other side of the fjord. Further out you will see mountain Elgen and Andfjord.

Arctic Kayaking

Enjoy a leisurely kayak along Harstad's beautiful shores.

Kayaking

After a brief drive to your kayak location, receive a safety instruction and set off for your adventure. Your guide will teach you the basics of kayaking in Arctic Norway and share stories about the locals and your surroundings. If you are fortunate, you may experience close encounters with the sea eagle, otters, seals and porpoise. Otherwise, simply enjoy the marvelous scenery around you.

E–Bike Adventure and Bonfire

This e-bike adventure is not just about biking in the nature, but also about experiencing the northern Norwegian life with a bonfire and food-prepping on the open flames.

Forest Cycling

Just a short walk away you will arrive at the e-bike center where you will be fitted with a bike and will be given a safety briefing. From the asphalt you enter broad forest paths well prepared for cycling.

Bonfire Local Refreshments

After a scenic round-trip ride, through a natural reserve with lakes and scenic hillsides, you will stop at one of the traditional shelters known as a 'gapahuk'. While your guide prepares a light meal at the bonfire, you can relax and enjoy the surroundings and the sounds of nature. When the food is ready, you will be treated to a "kos og hygge" around the warm fire as your guide shares stories and experiences about life in north Norway.

Harstad Beer Tasting

At Harstad Bryggeri all your senses will be awaken as you hear the story, see and smell the production, and taste a selection of arctic beers.

Harstad Brewery

Harstad Brewery is a traditional English brewery where only whole leaf hops are used for the best possible taste and aroma. The yeast is from Yorkshire, England and thrives best in open fermentation vessels where they collect yeast from the top for use in the next brew. Harstad Brewery brews beer in both English and Belgian style with some inspiration from America.

Guided Tour and Beer Tasting

You will be welcomed for a guided tour of the brewery where you will learn more about how the different ingredients affect the beer and beer brewing history in Norway, and the different styles of beer. Sample a selection of the beers, which emphasize the difference between beer styles that are related to how malt, hops and yeast are used. The beer tasting will be accompanied with some finger food and snacks to compliment the beer in the best possible way.

Historic Trondenes

Experience a journey through history protected by sword and cross, as you visit the Trondenes Historical Center, Medieval Farm and Adolf Gun on this half-day excursion.

Trondenes Peninsula

The Trondenes peninsula has great historical importance, both locally and nationally. Once a seat for a great Viking Chieftain, and later of strategic significance for the occupants during WWII. It was also a starting point for the christening of Norway and Trondenes church was one of the wealthiest in the country.

Trondenes Church, Trondenes Historical Center, Medieval Farm

Trondenes Church is the world's northernmost stone church from the late Middle Ages. Beautiful and whitewashed, it stands by the sea surrounded by thick walls from the Middle Ages. Just a short walk away you will find the Trondenes Historical Center and Medieval Farm. The exhibition at the Trondenes Historical Center gives an insight into the history of Harstad from the Stone Age to the present day. In addition, the Medieval Farm just next door gives an authentic look into a traditional household from around 1200. The story is enhanced through the use of multimedia show, reenactment, lights, sound and smell.

Adolf Gun

Continuing on, you will visit the Adolf Gun, one of the largest battleship canons put on land in Europe during World War II. The battery was built by the German forces and with its 4 cannons the battery was the most powerful in Hitler's Atlantic Wall. One of the four Adolf Guns is today a museum. In the bunker beneath the cannon there is an exhibition that shows its history, construction and planned use. There is also a "coastal artillery collection" of equipment and instruments used during WW2. The Adolf Gun stands today as the only restored cannon of its kind in the world!

Home Visit by the Sea

Experience the Northern Norwegian hospitality first-hand on this visit to a private home by the sea.

Home Visit, Refreshment, Intimate Concert

Northern Norway is well known for its welcoming attitude towards visitors, and this is your opportunity to sit down with the locals and learn first-hand what this means. After a short drive, arrive at your hosts home, where you will be greeted with open arms. You will hear how the family chose to settle in the area, their love for their idyllic home beside the fjord, and their day to day life in north Norway. Enjoy a sampling of a local treat and be entertained by an intimate jazz concert in their living room.
