Silversea Luxury Cruises A CONSTANTA

CONSTANTA

The Black Sea coast has been topping travellers’ wish lists for years. And unsurprisingly so; legend has it that Jason and his Argonauts passed through after finding the golden fleece, vestiges of the past are rich and plentiful and Byzantine chapels dot the horizon. The centre of the Black Sea coastal cities is, of course, Constanta. At 250 kilometres from Bucharest, Romania’s second-largest city is by no means thrust into the shade by the country’s capital. Au contraire - it has a deep history that goes back 2,500 years. View more

Like much of the coastline, Constanta has changed hands many times. Founded by the Greeks who named it Tomis, the city was captured by the Romans in 29 BC, who changed its name to Constanta, in honour of Constantine the Great’s half-sister. It then became part of the Bulgarian empire for 500 years, before falling prey to Ottoman rule in the 15th century. Naturally, such a storied past has left a mark and Constanta’s superb old town offers an informative lesson in living history. For those who wish to delve a little deeper into the city’s past, the superb Museum of National History and Archaeology and the Museum of Ethnography both offer an in-depth taste of a bygone era. The city’s main claim to fame however is that Roman poet Ovid was banished here after Emperor Augustus deemed his poetry indecent for the era. The Constantians however are only too proud of this connection, a statue of the poet stands proud in his eponymously name square, presiding over the city’s sights.

Excursiones en CONSTANTA

Highlights of Constanta on Foot

Enjoy a comprehensive introduction to Romania's second largest city and visits to its major places of interest during this half-day walking tour.

Being the fourth largest port in Europe and Romanian second largest city, Constanta is more than just one of the Black Sea ports. Its historical monuments, ancient ruins -vestiges of Roman domination here, museums and mosques that add a peculiar colour to the old downtown and proximity to beach resorts make the city especially attractive.

Museum of Ethnography

Begin with a short drive to the Museum of Ethnography. It displays over 16,000 ethnographic exhibits from all the Romanian regions including among others, the collection of unique glass icons and the colourful festive folk costumes exhibited in four upper halls.

City Centre. Ovid Square

Then walk through the city centre to the Ovid Square, named after the famous Roman poet, Ovid, exiled here by the Roman Emperor in 8 A.D. His statue, built 1888 by the famous sculptor, Ettore Ferrari, faces the Sea.

Museum of National History and Archaeology

Behind the statue you will find the Museum of National History and Archaeology, which provides a deep insight into the Hellenistic and Roman heritage of Constanta. An impressive collection of artifacts from Greek, Roman, and Daco-Roman civilizations are displayed in the museum. On the ground floor of the museum, see jewelry and garments made of silver, bronze and gold, the selection of vessels from the Hellenistic epoch and the church silver plates.

The highlight of the museum is a unique collection of Tanagra statuettes. The most outstanding of them are the original marble statuette of the serpent Glykon (the 2nd century AD), the statuette of the Goddess Fortune, the city's Patroness with Pontos - the Black Sea God and the statuettes of the Thinker and his Woman.

Refreshments

Take a rest from the sightseeing at one of the local cafes where a refreshing cup of tea or coffee will be served.

Royal Mosque and Orthodox Cathedral

Continue your walk through the old city centre passing by the Turkish Mosque, which, with its 155 feet high minaret, is the most important mosque in Constanta. Although orthodox, Romania has many other religious minorities; thus you can also admire a catholic church. After a few minutes' walk, arrive at St. Peter and Paul, the main Orthodox Cathedral.

Casino

The walking tour ends at the Casino, a beautiful building on a cliff directly at the Sea, with a beautiful view over the harbour of Constanta. Afterwards return to the ship.

Museum & Ancient Histria

Gain a deep insight into the country's great legacy while visiting the ruins of the ancient city of Histria referred to as the Romanian Pompeii

Museum of Ethnography

Depart the pier for a short drive to the Museum of Ethnography. It displays over 16,000 ethnographic exhibits from all the Romanian regions including among others, the collection of unique glass icons and the colourful festive folk costumes exhibited in four upper halls.

Histria

Continue with an approximately 1 hour scenic drive along the Black Sea coast to ancient town of Histria, located on the shore of the lake Sinoe and founded by the Greek colonists from Millet 2.600 years ago. It was the first Greek colony on the west shore of Pontos Euxinus (Black Sea) and is the oldest antique city on the Romanian territory discovered in 1914 by the Romanian archaeologist and historian Vasile Parvan. For 8 centuries during the Greek and Roman epoch Histria was a prosperous and developed city with the paved streets, comfortable houses, aqueducts, gymnasiums and temples. The city was destroyed several times by the invasions of the nomadic tribes and with time left in ruins and at last abandoned.

The town's fascinating past will be revealed as you walk along its streets and explore its ruins. Delve deep into the history of this ancient city and listen to the guide's narration bringing the remnants of the ancient walls, temples, sacred fountains and baths to life.

Histria Archaeological Museum

Next to the fortress is the Museum of Histra displaying collection of sculptural and architectural fragments, amphoras, statuettes, ceramics, glass vases, coins and jewelry.

Conclude the tour with the return drive to the pier.
