This 361-foot (108-metre) statue portrays the Sacred Heart, and was inspired by the statue of Christ the Redeemer overlooking Rio de Janeiro.

Jeronimos Monastery and Belém Tower

After crossing back over the bridge again, a brief exterior photo stop is made at the splendid Jeronimos Monastery, a 16th-century architectural masterpiece designed in the Gothic Manueline style. Leaving the monastery, continue on to the Belém Tower, a prominent city landmark that dominates the bank of the Tagus River. Visit the medieval King's Castle and Palace of the Dukes of Braganca (15th century) which houses a museum and art gallery with portraits, tapestries, fine furniture and porcelain. Oporto, as it appears today, dates mainly from the 18th century when trade was booming. Merchants built fine houses and financed grand buildings for their city. As you drive along the Avenida dos Aliados, which stretches from Praça da Liberdade to Praça D. Joao, see some of the city's most impressive buildings such as the 18th-century Church of Clerigos and the austere Se Cathedral, where visit the interior of this 12th-century Romanesque building.

Douro River

Following a city orientation, head down to the Ribeira Quarter to enjoy a boat ride on the Douro River, providing you with a totally different panorama of Oporto's skyline. On the opposite bank you visit Vila Nova de Gaia, home to the port trade and numerous wine lodges. Here, warehouses continue a tradition dating to the 13^th century with wine produced in the Douro Valley and transported here to mature in giant oak casks. Their brand-name port wines produced here are known worldwide. Visit one of the lodges and learn about the process of wine making before tasting a selection of these fine wines.

Afterwards, drive back to the port on your coach.

The design reflects its important role in commerce of the 19th century. Although this was originally a Gothic church, it has been transformed into one of the city's most important Baroque works.

Continuing on, visit the Stock Exchange Palace, a 19th-century gem of Arab and European influence with a fantastic Moorish hall.

Wine Cellar

Re-board the coach and proceed over the Douro River by way of the double-decker D. Luis I iron bridge, designed by Gustav Eiffel in 1875. Visit a well-known port wine cellar and listen as an informative guide explains the different stages of the production of wine. Proceed through the cellar amongst the oak casks and barrels. This Cantabria region in northern Spain belongs to "Green Spain", named because of its lush pastures and mountainous forest covered landscape. From Galicia in the east and all the way along the northern coast of Spain to the French border in the west, the coastal area is full of beaches, some relatively untouched, all with golden sands. Further inland Cantabria boasts two mountain ranges: the Cantabrian Mountains to the south and the Picos de Europa to the west.

Balmaseda

Located in a beautiful but unknown landscape for the people of Bizkaia, places like its Puente Viejo (Old Bridge), built in the 12th century, leads to the San Lorenzo neighbourhood which was home to the old Jewish District. Evidence of Roman influence is the road with a milestone dated 238 that connects to present-day Castro Urdiales. Historic buildings include Santa Clara, San Juan del Moral Church, Homositas Palace and Urrutia Palace as well as the Plaza de San Severino, with its church of the same name.

Castro Urdiales

Continue with a drive to Castro Urdiales, approximately 45 minutes away. The town centre of the village is filled with characteristic houses and rows of balconies, medieval in origin and earning the town recognition as an historic site in 1978. Wander the narrow streets and admire the varying styles and periods of monuments that can be found in this charming old fishing village. The buildings of the church of Santa María, from the 13th to the 15th centuries, the most significant example of Cantabria's Gothic architecture, and the castle-lighthouse, visible from all parts of town, are the most representative sights.

An approximate 30-minute drive back by coach returns you to the port and pier.

Laguardia

Bounded by the mountains of Cantabria to the north and by the left bank of the Ebro to the south, be introduced to this beautiful area of Spain. The San Ginés River splits the districts of Elvillar and Laguardia in the east, and it is bounded by Navaridas to the west. These geographic nuances provide this area with its particular landscapes and climate, which have clearly made a mark both in its history and in the villagers' character. Its name derives from Navarra´s "La Guarda" (The Guardian) due to the strategic position it holds against Castilla. In addition, the most important Rioja Alavesa wine cellars are located in the surrounding area.

Bayeux, the former capital of the Bessin region, was the first French town to be liberated in WWII. The town, fortunately, was not damaged during the war and the cathedral still keeps watch over the town and Bayeux Tapestry. The cloth presents a unique visual record of the events of 1066; from the rivalry between Harold and William to the conquest and final Norman victory.

Bayeux and Tapestry
From the pier depart via coach for Bayeux, 1.5 hours away. Upon arrival follow your guide as you discover enter the William the Conqueror Centre, a former seminary where the Bayeux Tapestry is displayed. The tapestry is probably the world's most celebrated piece of needlework. It depicts the dramatic story of the Normans’ conquest of England on 58 panels presented like a modern comic strip with action-packed scenes. The origin of the 225-foot (67.5m) tapestry remains obscure, but has sometimes been attributed to Queen Mathilda. A 20-minute audiovisual film provides information on the cloth before seeing it accompanied by audio headsets. The cloth is remarkably well preserved, featuring scenes that depict 11th-century Norman and Saxon dress, food, tools, cooking utensils and weapons. It remains the most accurate and lively document to survive from the Middle Ages with detailed information of that period.

Bayeux Cathedral
Following your visit of the tapestry, your guide takes you to see the immense Notre Dame Cathedral. It is said to be the oldest cathedral in Normandy and was rebuilt by William the Conqueror and is Bayeux's most important historic building and the former home of the tapestry. It bears the marks of the many changes it has undergone over centuries. Of the Romanesque church from the 11th century only the crypt and the lower part of the nave remain. During the Gothic period a superb chancel and gallery were added. Later additions included the building of side-chapels along the aisles, frescoes, furniture and works of art.

Following your discovery of the cathedral pause for lunch accompanied by wine before a guided exploration of Bayeux’s medieval streets featuring timber frame homes. Once oriented to the city center, free time is afforded to browse the area before beginning the return to the ship in Cherbourg.

Step back in time and through films, portraits and slide shows, follow the journey of emigrants leaving for the Americas during this half-day tour of Cité de la Mer.

On April 10th, 1912, at 6:35 pm, the Titanic docked at Cherbourg harbor where 281 passengers embarked and luxury French products such as champagne, wines, and cheeses were loaded onboard. At 8:10 pm, the Titanic set sail for Queenstown (now Cobh), the ship's last continental stop-over before leaving on its fateful journey westward.

Cité de la Mer Museum

The first part of this exhibition is dedicated to the history of European Emigration towards the New World at the start of the twentieth century. Cherbourg played a major role during this period with its specially constructed deep water port, transatlantic ferry terminal and specially adapted hotels.

The exhibition is actually housed in the wonderful Art Deco ferry terminal building, a unique architectural example of its time. Areas of the terminal that have up to now remained unopened to the public, include the impressive baggage room.

The second part of this exhibition is dedicated to the Titanic covering the ship's construction, working on board, life on the ship and its journey culminating in the fatal collision with the iceberg.

At the conclusion, it is a short walk back to the pier, or remain in town to explore further on your own.

Sainte-Mère-Eglise

The town's main claim to fame is that it played a significant part in the World War II Normandy landings. This village stood right in the middle of route N13, which the Germans would have most likely used on any significant counterattack on the troops landing on Utah and Omaha Beaches. In the early morning of 6 June 1944 mixed units of the U.S. 82nd Airborne and U.S. 101st Airborne Divisions occupied the town in Operation Detroit, giving it the claim to one of the first towns liberated in the invasion. Utah Beach
