DAY 2 - TOKYO / LAKE AKAN
An early check-out starts you on your way to Haneda airport for the flight to Kushiro where your Hokkaido tour starts.
Once in Kushiro, transfer to the Kushiro Marshland, the largest marshland in the country. Embrace the spectacular natural beauty of the Marshland during an approximate 1 hour walking tour on the Onnenai Boardwalk. This wooden walkway stretches through the swamp. The Marshland is also home to about 600 plant species, and offers habitats for the Japanese crane and other migratory birds. During your walking tour led by a local nature guide, see flowers from the Ice Age found only in eastern Hokkaido, a variety of alpine plants and northern animals, and the distinctive seasonal changes of the region.
As part of your walking tour, stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing on to visit the Japanese Crane Reserve. Nearly extinct during the Meiji Era due to over-hunting and environmental changes, the species rebounded when approximately 10 surviving cranes were discovered in the Kushiro-Marshland area about 70 years ago. Farmers fed them in the winter months when food was scarce, and the numbers of Japanese cranes have proliferated ever since. This Crane Reserve is also a shelter for injured Japanese Crane.
Leaving the Reserve, drive along Lake Akan toward your hotel (appox. 90 minute.) As the panoramic views of Lake Akan and Mt.Oakandake unfold right in front of your eyes, relax as you take a moment to gaze at the lush natural surroundings.
Enjoy a buffet style dinner and Japanese Onsen (hot springs) at the hotel to soak away your fatigue.
Overnight at the Tsuruga Wings Hotel - Lake Akan
DAY 3 - LAKE AKAN / SAPPORO
Enjoy breakfast before checking out and departing the hotel for the scenic drive to Lake Mashu (approx. 60 minutes). The world's most transparent lake, Mashu features beautiful, emerald-coloured surfaces that change from moment-to-moment and are always covered by mist. The Ainu people have revered this lake as the 'Lake of the Gods' since ancient times. Although a visit to the lakeshore is not permitted, splendid views are available from the observatories.
Continue to Iouzan, an active volcano on Mount Iou, or 'Sulphur Mountain'. Upon arrival, you can stroll around the steaming and smoking area, where yellow, sulphurous vents can be viewed from up close. A few walking trails here are ideal for a pleasant stroll around the mountain. Eggs, cooked by the natural heat of the volcano, are usually on sale near the vents. A short drive takes you to the local restaurant where a Japanese style lunch is waiting for you.
After lunch, transfer to Memambetsu Airport and take a flight to Sapporo where you will spend the last night before getting onboard ship. The remainder of the evening, including dinner, is on your own this evening. Explore Izakaya, Japanese local restaurants and meet and drink with the locals.

After breakfast and check-out at the hotel, take a short visit to Okurayama Observatory. Here, you can view the Ski Jump stadium for Sapporo Winter Olympic Games held in 1972, as a monument to the event. You can climb up to the hill by lift. At the top, you will enjoy a panoramic view of Sapporo city and truly realize how high the slopes stand.
Before reaching the port, stop by Otaru's popular venue, the Former Aoyama Villa. It is also nicknamed as Nishin Goten (Herring Mansion in English). During the Meiji and Taisho eras (1868-1926), herring fisheries prospered, making many successful. The villa was the home of an Otaru herring fishery boss and was constructed in 1922 over the course of six years. You will see the beauty with craftsman's minute technique in each part of Mansion.
