VIS

Arrival in Croatia’s tiny island Vis is cinematographic. After a passing by a series of small islands, you arrive at a harbour lined with creamy white houses and perhaps the clearest water you’re likely to find this side of the Adriatic. As you stroll around the narrow streets of Kut, the harbour’s oldest and most beautiful part, you’ll find that these same houses are adorned with bougainvillea, courtyards and tiny jetties. You’ll also find an island that, despite the tourism boom of the rest of Croatia, has remained exactly as it was 40 years ago. The feeling of yesteryear on Vis is not just wishful make believe. The island was designated as a military base under former socialist president Tito, who froze development for more than 40 years, allowing farming and fishing to remain the dominant activities. The island may be just two hours by ferry to Split (and is one of the farthest from the mainland), but it is light years from the hordes of tourists that shuffle through the bigger port every day. Instead, on Vis, you’ll find an island for those in the know who want a quiet getaway. If the island looks familiar, that’s because it is. It was used as the setting for Mama Mia 2, which speaks volumes on how pretty Vis is. While the island’s incredible history, archaeological museum and 17th century churches will no doubt keep scholars happy, there is really nothing better to do on Vis than find a secluded spot (there are many), take a dip in the achingly clear waters and relax the day away.

A Round Tour of the Vis Island by Speed Boat

Departure from Komiža. Visit to Stiniva bay - the most beautiful and attractive bay of Vis island and throughout the region. Stiniva bay has been protected as a Croatian natural monument since 1967. A tour of the famous Green cave which is located on the open-sea side of the islet Ravnik, known for the visible green beam of light that penetrates through the opening on its ceiling and refracts on the sea surface. You can swim and discover this shimmering green underwater world.

Continue to Town of Vis for a short visit and light lunch. Vis has always been a town and for a short period a state as well. At the beginning of 19th century 12,000 people lived here from all over Europe. That influenced Vis' language where you can find, besides the derivates of the Venetian dialect, English, French, German and even Hungarian words. Compared to Hvar or Korčula, Vis faces the land and is open to everything coming from there. Its port even today offers shelter for many fishermen and seamen, lost researchers and other dejected adventurers.

That is how the Greeks from Syracuse found the port of Vis which reminded them of home.

After short visit of Vis continue to Submarine tunnel. The Submarine tunnel was built in the early 80's of the last century and is embedded in a massive rock in the bay called Parja. The tunnel was used as a secondary position for boats and submarines in the defense of Vis. Interesting to see and have a
