Found at the western tip of Java in Banten Province, the Ujung Kulon National Park –a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991- includes the Ujung Kulon Peninsula and several neighboring islands. The park not only has the most extensive lowland semi-evergreen rainforest on Java, a result of the evacuation of the area after Krakatoa’s eruption and tsunami in 1883, it also includes the Krakatau Nature Reserve to the north. The special interest of this park is the on-going evolution of geological and biological processes since Krakatoa’s eruption in the late 19th century. The park is the last remaining viable natural refuge for the endemic, critically endangered and rarely seen single-horned Javan rhinoceros. Several species of cats and civets, the endemic Javan gibbon and Javan leaf monkey and three types of deer can also be found in the park. During rainforest walks some of the more than 220 bird species recorded can be seen. Ujung Kulon’s marine areas were reported to have some of the richest fish fauna in Indonesia.

Excursions in UJUNG KULON NATIONAL PARK

Ujung Kulon National Park

It's an early morning departure to discover the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ujung Kulon National Park, at the southwest tip of Java. The National Park includes the Ujung Kulon Peninsula, containing the largest remaining lowland rain forest on the Java plain.

Tendering from the ship, arrive at the Peucang Jetty which is the headquarters of Peucang Ujung Kulon National Park. "Peucang" is the local word for barking deer, as hundreds of barking deer are found in its dense tropical forest, along with other wild animals, like monkeys, hornbill, monitor lizards and wild boars.

Once ashore, meet and greet with your guide and ranger, and then walk to Ranger house for a short brief about Peucang National Park. Head north and walk under tree canopy for about an hour and half, or 2.5 miles, to explore the dense forest and other flora and fauna. See the huge trees as well as corals thrown from the ocean by the big Krakatau tsunami in 1883. Birders may spot Asian Pied Hornbill, Caspian and Bridled Terns, as well as White-bellied Sea Eagles, Tiger Shrikes, Sunda Minivets, and Javan Kingfisher.

Return to pier and enjoy swimming, snorkeling or just relaxing and sunbathing on the white sandy beach.
