SYROS
SYROS

Beautiful sea, crisp white beaches, and charming medieval villages add character and colour to this gorgeous Greek Island. With its blockbuster neighbours Mykonos and Santorini, Syros flies a little under the radar at times – but the island’s devoted fans wouldn't have it any other way. Part of the Cyclades group of islands, visit the capital, Ermoupoli, to discover a network of picturesque narrow streets and winding alleyways - dotted with fancy old Venetian mansions, and elegant domed churches. View more

The colourful town cascades down to an open waterfront of pine-trees and beautiful views. Head to the sparkling marbled central square, overlooked by the Town Hall and surrounded by a celebrated collection of neoclassical buildings facing up across narrow streets. A town of peeking bell towers and cobalt-blue domed churches - stop by the Church of the Assumption, which treasures an original El Greco wonder inside. Further up you'll find the small, monastery-sprinkled medieval village of Ano Syros. Settled on a hill, it offers a glorious view down over the port and white dwellings of Ermoupoli below. You can visit Capuchin Monastery, which was built in the 16th century to help the underprivileged. Encounter the Vamvakaris Museum, dedicated to Markos Vamvakaris, a famous rebetiko musician, born here in 1905. Of course, Syros is also surrounded by plenty of blissful beaches, if you'd rather hit the sands. Finikas beach is nearby, and a long, luxurious stretch, complete with sunbeds and umbrellas. Perfect for catching some sun and shade, and watching the blue seawater twinkling.

Excursions in SYROS

Neoclassical Ermoupolis on Foot

Discover the exquisite architecture and monuments of the 'City of Hermes' during this picturesque excursion through historic Ermoupoli on-foot.

Ermoupoli City Walking Tour

Depart the pier for your guided walking tour through Ermoupoli, the capital of Syros. The largest city in the Cyclades, Ermoupoli is built like an amphitheatre around its harbour, and is crowned by the twin peaks of Ano Syros to the north and the Ortodox Vrontado to the south. The city was rebuilt in the early-mid-19th century, and boasts gorgeous Neo-Classical architecture and monuments.

St. Nicholas Church and Apollon Theatre

Your first stop is at the St. Nicholas Church, followed by the Unknown Soldier Monument. From here, stroll amongst the lovely villas of the Vaporia area, also known as 'Little Venice', then pass by the impressive Apollo Theatre, the first opera house of Greece.

Miaoulis Square and Church of the Assumption

Next, continue to Miaoulis Square with its monumental marble platform built for the Syros Philharmonic and Town Hall. Stop by the first high school of modern Greece and a colourful shopping area, then enter the Church of the Assumption to marvel at a masterpiece of religious art, an icon by the painter El Greco. At the conclusion of your tour, some free time is made available to explore the city at your leisure before returning to the pier on-foot.

Resurrection Hill & Ano Syros

Discover the two iconic hills and settlements of Syros during this panoramic sightseeing excursion.

Syros, Resurrection Hill, Orthodox Church of the Resurrection, Aegean Sea, Ermoupolis

Depart the pier for the short drive to Resurrection Hill. Upon arrival, a visit is made to the Orthodox Church of the Resurrection. Located on the top of the hill, the church overlooks the Aegean Sea and city of Ermoupolis unfolding beneath. The church was built in 1870, on the spot where a memorial to the Greek Revolution of 1821 was erected and designed by the architect Dimitris Eleftheriadis. Since it's the same height as the Church of St. George in the neighbouring hill of Ano Syros, this edifice is one of Syros' iconic landmarks. Following your church visit, some free time is made available to explore your surrounds, and enjoy breath-taking panoramic vistas of the coast and Aegean Sea.

Ano Syros Village, Steps, White Houses and Arches

Next, re-board your coach and continue on to the hilltop village of Ano Syros. Founded in 1200 by the Venetians and inhabited throughout the course of history, the village maintains its Catholic and medieval character to this day. The city is characterised by countless steps that pass by the white houses and arches at the edge of the hill, which leads to the top of the village. Following your guided walking tour, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Syros Medieval Past & Loukoumi

Explore the medieval settlement of Ano Syros and explore the island of Syros and its local villages.

Church of Assumption and Ano Syros

Depart the pier for the short drive to the Church of the Assumption to marvel at a masterpiece of religious art, an icon by the painter El Greco. Next, re-board your coach and proceed for a visit to Ano Syros. This medieval town is comprised of a maze of whitewashed passages, arches and steps that form a huddle of interlinking houses. Your first stop is at the Catholic Cathedral of St. George. This Jesuit monastery reflects the centuries-long presence of western culture on the island, and was built on the site of a 13th-century church. Pass by the 'piazza', or town centre, before returning to your coach to proceed with a scenic drive of the island.

Villages of Syros and Loukoumi

Continue with a panoramic drive of this beautiful island. En route you will be able to see some of the local villages with their sandy beaches. Drive by Azolimnos, Vari, Megas Gialos, Posidonia, Finikas, Galissas and Kini. Before returning to Ermoupoli you will have one last stop, where you will learn about the traditional product of Syros - the 'loukoumi'. Learn how this traditional and famous sweet is made and get the chance to try it before returning to the pier.

Villages of Syros

Explore the local villages, landmarks and churches of Syros Island during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Syros, Church of the Assumption, El Greco-Painted Assumption Icon, Local Villages and Beaches

Depart the pier for the short drive to the Church of the Assumption. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour of the church. Along the way, marvel at the original Assumption icon painted by El Greco. From here, your scenic drive continues with a picturesque drive along the local seaside villages of Syros and their beaches, including Azolimnos, Vari, Megas Gialos, and Galissas.

Poseidonia, Mansion, Finikas Village, Free Time, Kini, St. Barbara Monastery

Next, head to Poseidonia for a splendid view of the picturesque 19th-century mansion among the pine trees. After a photo stop here, continuing to Finikas Village. Upon arrival, some free time is made available to explore the village at your leisure. Leaving Finikas, re-board your coach and drive to Kini, where a stop is made at the St. Barbara Monastery, the only Orthodox monastery on the island. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.
