Silversea Expedition Cruises To SOMOSOMO (Taveuni)

SOMOSOMO (Taveuni)

Somosomo is the largest village on Taveuni, which in turn is Fiji’s third largest island. The village has had and still has political importance as it is the headquarters for Taveuni’s highest chief, the Tui Cakau, and Fiji’s Great Council of Chiefs met in Somosomo until 2012. Somosomo and Naqara, its immediate neighboring village with a predominantly Indo-Fijian population, are the commercial center for Taveuni. View more

Slightly west of Somosomo is the 180th meridian and a sign indicating the International Dateline (which has been moved east of Tonga by now) is about 2 miles to the southwest. Somosomo is also famous for the amount of soft coral in the Somosomo Strait, just west of Somosomo and Taveuni. The reefs along the Somosomo Strait are considered among the best in the South Pacific as tidal currents and constant year–round water temperature create the ideal environment for some 390 species of hard and soft corals and over 1500 species of fish. Other attractions near Somosomo are the Bouma National Park with its waterfalls and Lake Tangimaucia.

Excursions in SOMOSOMO (Taveuni)

Bird Watching at Bobby`s Farm

The best "birder" on Taveuni island is Bobby, a man committed to the preservation of the island's bird wildlife. Witness rare native birds on their natural habitat, a place they call home. The best time is early in the morning, 2 hours after sun rise. Known as the garden island of Fiji Taveuni is home to many species of tropical birds, a large proportion of which is endemic. It is believed the main reason for this variety of bird life is the absence of the mongoose, which was introduced on many of the other Fijian islands to control the rat population. Taveuni's relatively inaccessible mountains and abundant food supply also have made it a haven for many species.

Well known Professor Allen Keast and Mr David Bishop, both respected in the field of bird watching, describe the experience here as one of their most memorable.

You may be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of any or all of the following species: Many Colored Fruit Dove, Ground Dove, Turtle Dove, Whistling Dove, Green Dove, Silk Tail, Parrot Finches, Honey-eater, Orange Breasted Honey-eater, Fly Catcher, Broad Bill, Fantail, Barking Pigeon, White Throated Pigeon, Triller, Parrot, Collared Lory, White Eye, Golden Whistler.

Bouma National Heritage Park

Visit one of the most spectacular waterfall framed by thick, lush green jungle, Bouma National Heritage Park is the prime example of what makes Taveuni the "garden island" of Fiji with its lush green forest and spectacular fall. Enjoy a scenic bus ride from Waiyevo along the coastal and tropical rainforest as you journey up to Bouma waterfall. Imagine hiking through a wonderland, full of flowers and plants of all kinds, incredible vistas, and stunning waterfalls. To begin, walk along a wide trail decorated with flowers. This leads you to Bouma's first waterfall and swimming hole. Soak in the water or climb up behind the falls and jump off the ten foot ledge for a little rush! If you continue your hike from the first falls, you'll head uphill to a bure and deck where you can enjoy extensive views of the ocean and rainforest around you. Just this view is well worth the hike! If you still have the energy, visit other two falls amidst the Bouma forest. Upon return, enjoy the refreshments provided from the vegetation of Bouma when you quench your thirst with coconut drink and seasonal fruits before a re-boarding your buses for a return trip to Waiyevo.

Lavena Coastal Walk and Wainibau Falls Hike

Spend the day hiking in the Bouma National Heritage Park, a project aimed at conserving the rainforest of Taveuni and the Vanua Bouma. This park was established in 1990 not only to protect the forest but also as a means of generating an income for the four adjacent villages.

Wainibau Falls can be accessed through a walk from the village with an easy to moderate walk. Its flat all the way and at the end you can refresh with a swim that will restore your energy and rejuvenate your body.

Rainbow Reef Dive & Great White Wall

Fed by the nutrient - rich waters that flow through the somosomo straits, Taveuni Rainbow reef is home to one of the world's greatest displays of soft corals and famous world class dive site. Whisked away on a 30 foot dive vessel and dive with the most experienced divers with intimate knowledge of the surrounding waters of Taveuni Island. Explore the beauty of nature in the underwater world and capture the moment.

Somosomo Village & International Date Line

Enjoy a scenic drive that will surely foretell the day as nature itself portrays its habitat between both ends of the road. Arrive at the Chiefly village of Dreketi, Somosomo and as the villagers welcome you with a fresh coconut fruit drink, you will be taken on a tour of the village where you will witness local demonstrations on weaving and coconut presentation with the lively traditional entertainment portraying the Fijian way of living in this island paradise.

Next, visit the date lines where the day separates, and tomorrow farewells yesterday. Though Fiji adheres to the single time convention, the International dateline cuts straight through Taveuni offering visitors a great photo opportunity and a chance to jump from one day to the next.

Your tour concludes when you visit the Holy Cross Church in Wairiki which was built in 1907 in honor of a French missionary who successfully advised Taveuni's warriors on how to defeat invading Tongans in a major battle. It's an imposing stone structure in the Roman style with stained-glass windows and the only seating areas are floor mats. Explore at your own pace the spectacular architecture and the amazing interior designs.

Waitabu Marine Park Snorkeling Adventure

Snorkel in the Marine Reserve waters, a pilot project initiated by Waitabu villagers in protecting their native fishing grounds from over-fishing. Today it is home to the most amazing marine species you may ever see. The colorful corals, clamps and different varieties of fish springs back life. Bask in the enjoyment of swimming in the crystal clear waters, you might also get a surprise visit from a familiar turtle that calls Waitabu reefs home or find yourself a gentle ray.
