Silversea Luxury Cruises To SAN SEBASTIAN (La Gomera)

SAN SEBASTIAN (La Gomera)

Unspoiled, green and lush, this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve has many secrets to reveal. A Canary Island capital like no other, life is lived at a refreshingly lackadaisical pace here. Wander between San Sebastian's faded pastel hues, which spill across the coastline, and bathe in this seaside city's warm sunshine, as waves splash onto sunny beaches. A sleepy capital city, travellers have been resting, relaxing and rejuvenating here for centuries – including Christopher Columbus, whose presence remains in museums dedicated to his visit. He called in to restock water supplies while voyaging to discover the new world. Silbo, an extraordinary whistling language, used to communicate over great distances, adds even more cultural fascination to this luscious island’s mountain scenery, crafts and traditions. Head to beaches like Playa de San Sebastian to revel in the black volcanic sand that the Canaries are known for, and Playa de la Cueva, where you can look across to Tenerife’s soaring cone. Or explore this island's own natural wonders, at the verdant terraced landscapes of La Gomera’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, Garajonay National Park. Trek through the trails of Laurisilva forests, laurel plants and heather trees. La Laguna Grande is another elegant location of colourful natural beauty, where island legends of witchcraft swirl. Discover ceramic traditions - handed down through generations - at El Cercado, where glazed jugs used to store chestnuts are moulded by hand. Squeeze more local charms into your bulging suitcase along San Sebastian’s pretty Calle Real street - where everything from palm honey to woven baskets and local snacks are up for grabs. Or settle into city squares, where life plays out in palm tree shade and café gatherings.

Excursions in SAN SEBASTIAN (La Gomera)

Garajonay Las Hayas Trek

Experience the pristine natural splendour of Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on-foot during this half-day hiking excursion through a beautiful laurel rainforest.

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive to Garajonay National Park. Upon arrival at Las Hayas, begin your 2.5-hour guided nature hike. Your route crosses the oldest part of the tropical mountain forest amidst moss-grown laurel and heather trees en route to a refreshment stop at Jarin de Creces.

Leaving the park, the last part of your nature hike leads you through Arure and past cultivated terrace fields and fruit groves. Following your hike, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 2.2 miles (about 3.5 kilometres), at times over uneven ground, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is not suitable for guests with heart and/or respiratory conditions, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight comfortable clothing, sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.

Gomera Delights

Embrace the splendid natural beauty of La Gomera during a full-day sightseeing excursion through this incredibly picturesque archipelago.

Degollada de Peraza

Depart the pier for the approximately 1.5-hour drive south to Garajonay National Park. En route, ascend to the Degollada de Peraza, where a photo stop is made at a scenic lookout. At an elevation of approximately 656 yards (about 600 metres), you can see changes in the vegetation caused by the horizontal rain. Upon arrival at Degollada de Peraza, proceed to Rogue de Agando, an eroded volcanic chimney.

Garajonay National Park

Your drive continues on to the centre of the island for a visit to Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Opened in 1981, the park spans approximately 9,850 acres (about 3,986 hectares), and is home to endemic flora that includes laurisilva, fayal, brezal and aceviño.

La Laguna Grande

Next, a stop is made in La Laguna Grande, where some free time is made available to explore the area's natural beauty at your leisure. From here, head to the spectacular Valley of the Great King, home of the island's last 'Guanche' Chieftain, to learn about the conquest of Gomera at the beginning of the 15th century. During your visit, marvel at the surrounding curtain of mountains and discover remote communities and terraced farms clinging to the valley walls.

Valle Gran Rey

Your last stop is at Valle Gran Rey. Following lunch at the Restaurante Conchita and some free time at your leisure, commence the approximately one-hour drive through the mountains en route to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and at the sites visited. Walking is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair; however, this tour involves some steep, hairpin bends, and is not suitable for guests who suffer from vertigo. Lightweight comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.

Scenic Gomera

Discover the picturesque beauty of La Gomera and the local lifestyle of its inhabitants during this half-day sightseeing excursion to the northern part of the island.

Laguna Grande and Garajonay National Park

Depart the pier for the drive north to Laguna Grande. Upon arrival, learn about Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, then take a ride through one of the oldest laurel forests in the world.

Valle Gran Rey and Tapas

After some photo stops en route, proceed to the Palmarejo restaurant, which was designed by the famous architect César Manrique. Here, take in splendid vistas of Valle Gran Rey, learn about El Silbo and dine on local tapas.

El Cercado Pottery Village

Your tour continues with a drive to El Cercado, a village famous for its pottery. The artisans of El Cercado make their pottery without a pottery wheel; a tradition passed from one generation to another. During your visit, meet the pottery artisans and learn about their craft. Afterward, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 75-minute drive through the mountain villages and back to the pier, with photo stops made en route.
