505793042

At the very southern end of the Lofoten Islands are bird cliffs that hold Norway’s largest colony of Atlantic Puffins, and also good numbers of kittiwakes, Razorbills, Black Guillemots, shags, Northern Fulmars and White-tailed Eagles. Storm Petrels and Leach Petrels can be seen from early July onwards. Characteristic shoreline species are Whimbrel, Red-necked Phalarope, Arctic Skua, Turnstone and Arctic Tern. Slightly further north is Værøy, an island with quite a few specialties. View more

A special dog was bred to hunt puffins –the Norwegian Lundehund- while islanders caught the White-tailed Eagles with their hands! We will go ashore in Værøy and offer hikes and might do a Zodiac cruise along the rugged coast.

Excursions in REINE LOFOTEL ISLANDS

Lofoten Impressions & Viking Museum

As you drive through the scenic landscapes of Lofoten witness of majestic mountain peaks and the large swaths of fertile land that served as the stage of Viking history. Arriving in Flakstad, visit one of the oldest churches in Lofoten dating back to 1780. The church was built from Russian timber as a result of the Pomor Trade, which was a bartering agreement involving stockfish. The building itself is inspired by the Russian churches and their architectural style from the 18th century.

Continuing on, you will have a photo opportunity at Norway's most famous beach, Haukland. With it's pearly white sand and sapphire water surrounded by greenery and mountain peaks, you will feel as if you are in an arctic paradise.

Arriving at the Viking Museum in Borg, you will survey an exhibition of artifacts discovered by archaeologists, as well as recreations of Viking homes. Immersed in the atmosphere of the Viking village, you will become engagingly acquainted with how the Vikings lived a thousand years ago. The idea of the museum is to recreate the atmosphere in a Viking village with handicrafts, buildings, and food typical for the area and era. During your visit you will be treated to soup made from an old North Norwegian recipe, prepared over an open fire. You will also have the opportunity to practice some of the ancient Viking crafts, such as archery and ax throwing.

Lofoten Local Art & Viking Museum

Leaving Reine you will venture across scenic landscapes to Sund, where you will visit the Fishery Museum and a blacksmith whom is known for his beautiful cormorants made of steel. The decorative wrought iron cormorants are famous all over the world, and can be found in the Pentagon, the Kremlin and in the King of Norway's palace. Here you will also find a collection of boats, many originally used in fishing operations during the former years of the great Lofoten Fishery. You will also have a chance to visit the fisherman's cabin, which contains a wide range of domestic utensils, tools and other objects used in the fisherman's home.

Continuing on, in the middle of Lofoten, between steep mountains facing the open sea, you will find the glassblower's studio in Vikten. In 1976 Åsvar Tangrand was the first person in Northern Norway work with glassblowing. At his studio called the Glass Hut, you will witness the glassblower form a non-descript glob of material into a beautiful work of art. Survey the unique glass works on display, or relax in the Glass Hut's lounge to admire another impressive work of art - nature's views of the beach and ocean, and enjoy some light refreshments.
