Ras Al Khaimah City Orientation

Ras Al Khaimah has the most colorful history and sightseeing attractions of all the Emirates. Fascinating traditions and culture mix with a modern life which create the unique flavour of this Emirate.

Sheikh Mohammed Bin Salim Mosque

After leaving the pier you will drive to the Mosque which is on a hill between the Gulf and the Creekside markets. The mosque had its first major renovations in 1951 when Sheikh Saqr ordered that everyone give three rupees for it's repairs. Traders imported stone from the Tunb islands and wood from Zanzibar for its construction. Water for ablutions came from a well near the mosque. A covered walkway, patio, stonework and an additional 28 windows were added by the government in 1990. It is considered the biggest and oldest mosque that is still in use in RAK.

RAK National Museum

Continue past the "the traditional Fish- and Vegetable Market", which is located in old RAK town, and from there visit the RAK National Museum which was established in 1987. Like all other traditional houses in Ras Al Khaimah Old Town the "Late Fort" was originally constructed from coral stone, a fossil building material originating for the sea. Although being fairly light weight, it possesses excellent insulation qualities, keeping buildings cool in summer and warm in winter. Today the massive rectangular tower represents the oldest part of the "Late Fort", It originally served as a single defence tower, and unlike today, stood outside the perimeter wall of the "Old Town. While its foundations originate from 1809-1819, all further additions took place and the peace treaty was signed with the British in 1820.

Jazirah Al Hamra

This Hisin was built in the middle of the 18th century. As you continue to walk from the museum, at the end of the street you will come across one of the oldest mosques in the town. Proceed towards Al Jazirah Al Hamra which the last authentic and traditional town is still standing in the United Arab Emirates. Once a small island, its inhabitants subsisted on maritime and pearl trading before they abandoned their houses in the middle of the 20th century. An undisturbed picture of life before the discovery of oil was left behind and preserved until today. This is a unique area for Ras Al Khaimah and the whole country. Al Jazirah Al Hamra shows all elements of a traditional town, including a fortress for defence purposes, a small market, several mosques and a variety of houses. Driving along the beautiful "Corniche Road" a photo stop is made at "Masjed Sheikh Zayed".

Tour will end at the pier.
