Silversea Luxury Cruises To PORTO-VECCHIO (Corsica)

PORTO-VECCHIO (Corsica)

Set on a hillock overlooking a beautiful deep blue bay, Porto Vecchio, 15 miles (25km) north of Bonifacio, was rated by Scottish author James Boswell as one of "the most distinguished harbours in Europe". It was founded in 1539 as a second Genoese stronghold on the east coast, Bastia being well established in the north. View more

The site was perfect; close to the unexploited and fertile plain, it benefited from secure high land and a sheltered harbour, although the mosquito population spread malaria and wiped out the first Ligurian settlers within months. Things began to take off mainly thanks to the cork industry, which still thrived well into the twentieth century. Today, a third of Corsica's wine is exported from Porto Vecchio, but most revenue comes from visitors. Around the centre of town explore the well-preserved fortress and the small grid of ancient streets backing onto the main place de la République. East of the square you can't miss the Porte Génoise, which frames a delightful expanse of sea and salt pans and through which you'll find the quickest route down to the modern marina, lined with cafés and hotels.

Bavella Landscape

Embrace the stunning natural beauty of Porto Vecchio during this half-day sightseeing excursion to Bavella.

Sotta, Carbini and Zonza Villages

Depart the pier for the scenic appromately 1.5 hour drive to Bavella. Along the way, take in superb views of the deep blue sea and pass through the small villages of South of Corse before reaching Zonza. Upon arrival, some free time is made available to explore the town, browse the shops for souvenirs and/or relax with a coffee whilst taking in your surrounds.

Bavella, Ospedale and Gulf of Port Vecchio

Following your visit, re-board your coach and ascend still higher in the mountains of Corsica toward Bavella. Upon arrival, a photo stop is made for stunning panoramic views over the mountains, canyons, pine trees and beautiful sea. Afterward, re-board your coach and commence the approximately two-hour drive back to the pier. En route, pass through the Ospedale Forest, which is renowned for its enormous granite boulders amidst the deep green landscape of wild Corsica, and take in wonderful views over the gulf of Porto Vecchio before returning to your ship.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking for approximately 547 metres (about 500 metres), at times on uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and many steps at the sites visited. Walking in Zonza is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear weather-suitable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection, and bring a jacket or raingear as needed. U.S. Dollars are not accepted; please bring Euros for purchases. The tour sequence may vary.

Bonifacio by land and sea

Experience the medieval clifftop town of Bonifacio by land and sea during this memorable, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Porto Vecchio, Bonifacio, Citadel, St. Francois Convent, Mariners' Cemetery, St. Dominique Church

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive to Bonifacio, a town perched atop chalky cliffs plunging into the deep, blue Mediterranean Sea. Upon arrival in the lower-town, board a mini-train and ascend the winding road to the upper-town. En route, a spectacular panorama of the fjord and limestone cliffs unfolds. Pass the massive walls of the Citadel as you continue towards the lookout point. See the St. Francois Convent and Mariners' Cemetery, which features flamboyant mausoleums with stuccoed facades, Gothic arches and classical columns. In addition, view the exterior of the St. Dominique Church. This rare example of Corsican Gothic architecture was built in 1270, likely by the Templars.

Old Citadel, Two Emperors Street, Place des Armes, Jardin des Vestiges, Mediterranean Sea

Upon arrival at the entrance to the town, de-board the train and take a guided walking tour of the Old Citadel. Stroll through tiny, narrow streets bordered by high, granite houses. Continue on to Two Emperors Street, where Napoleon Bonaparte and Charles V spent a few days, then see the Place des Armes and Jardin des Vestiges, the only ruins from Old Bonifacio. From the marketplace, enjoy a breath-taking view of the Mediterranean Sea below the cliffs on which the town is built.

Porte des Genes, Little Train-Ride or Rastello Steps, Boat-Ride, Limestone Cliffs and Caves

Next, proceed for a brief visit to the Porte des Genes. This imposing gate, with its drawbridge, was once the only entrance to the town. Don't miss this unique opportunity to photograph the gate and fjord below, which is dotted with yachts and boats. Leaving the Porte des Genes, you may opt to re-board the little train for the ride back to the marina, or walk back via the Rastello Steps along the marina. Upon arrival at the marina, embark a local tender boat for a ride under the astonishing limestone cliffs on which the houses of the citadel are perched precariously above the sea. Weather permitting, your captain manoeuvres the boat into the caves carved into the limestone. Following your boat-ride on these crystal-clear waters, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.93 miles (about 1.5 kilometres), at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, board/de-board train and embark/disembark the boat. This tour is not suitable for guests suffering from vertigo, guests prone to motion sickness, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.

Sailing Around Porto-Vecchio Waters

There are not many places in the world that embody a combination of dazzling lagoon, busy, vibrant harbor, sweeping mountain views and European charm, but Porto Vecchio offers all of these qualities. Nestled on the southeast corner of Corsica, this unique city is famed for being the start of the first stage of Tour de France in 2013.

Enjoy a full day of fun and relaxation on this exclusive opportunity to sail around Porto Vecchio. Your small group decides your stops for the day as you sail in the heart of Bouches deo Bonifacio, the lovely strait waters that separate Corsica from Sardinia.

During the day there is plenty of time for kayaking or snorkeling the turquoise waters of this stunningly beautiful area. Enjoy the chance to maneuver this 12-to-14-meter ship while it is at sea and man the help, or you can just sit back and relax, taking in the view, the sun and the sea.

All the ships are equipped with bathrooms, changing rooms, and a spot for children to have a nap.

Sartene & Delicacies

Explore the splendid Old Town of Sartène and its storied past during this scenic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Porto Vecchio, Sartène

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.5-hour drive to Sartène. En route, traverse the interior landscape between the coast and macchia. Sartène is perched on a promontory, with some of its houses built into the rocks. Known as the 'most Corsican of Corsica's towns', medieval Sartène is steeped in the traditions of superstition and vendetta. Even today, it retains a fascinatingly sombre atmosphere. Situated high on a hill, the perfectly preserved Old Town has high granite walls, tall townhouses with steep steps to guard against unexpected attacks, and a maze of narrow passageways. Although Sartène is not as commercially geared towards tourism as towns such as Bonifacio, it does offer an authentic Corsican experience.

Old Town, Castle Ruins, Musee de la Prehistoire Corse, Church Sainte Marie, Place de la Liberation

During your guided walking tour, learn about the storied history of the Old Town and view its main attractions. Highlights include early-13th-century castle ruins, the labyrinthic Old Town, small Musee de la Prehistoire Corse and Church Sainte Marie. Here, you can see the cross-and-chain carried by the penitent on Good Friday procession, and where warring families of the 19th century were forced to make peace. Your stroll continues on to a pleasant square, Place de la Liberation (previously called Place Porta). This square is lined with cafes and pizzerias, and offers lovely views over the surrounding valley. Afterward, some free time is made available to explore the Old Town at your leisure.

Lion de Roccapina Viewpoint

At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier. En route, a photo stop is made at the Lion de Roccapina Viewpoint, where a rock appears to have been carved into the shape of a lion.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.93 miles (about 1.5 kilometres), at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. Walking in the Old Town is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests suffering from vertigo, guests prone to motion sickness, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.
