Silversea Luxury Cruises To PORTO NOVO

PORTO NOVO

Porto Novo is found on Sao Antonio, the northwesternmost of the Cape Verde Islands, and is the island’s largest town with approximately 17,400 inhabitants. Located on Sao Antonio’s southeastern and arid side, Porto Novo began as a fishing village and only in 2005 it was recognized as a city. Since the island has no airport and Porto Novo faces the town of Mindelo on the island of Sao Vicente, this harbor is the main link to the other islands in Cape Verde and the outside world. A monument above the port shows a woman waving goodbye to those emigrating from the Cape Verde Islands. Roads leading out of Porto Novo have to either go along the impressive northeast coast or cross the island’s mountains through a rugged and even more spectacular landscape. The third highest peak of the Cape Verde islands at 1,979 meters is the Tope de Coroa to the west of Porto Novo.

Excursions in PORTO NOVO

Cova Crater, Ponta Do Sol & Paul Valley

Cova Crater

Start this full day with a visit to Cova Crater and learn about the local agriculture. Peaks up to 4,921 ft, make for good trekking, through deep green valleys.

Fontainhas

Enjoy spectacular views while driving along the former trade route high into the mountains to the village of Fontainhas. This colorful, picturesque village seems to cling onto the mountains, which overlook the beautiful coastline. It is situated near the rocky North coast of the islands, 2km Southwest of the island's capital Porto Novo. The settlement includes the smaller villages of Corvo and Forminguinhas.

Ponta do Sol

From Fontainhas head to the fishing village of Ponta do Sol, where you will enjoy a traditional local lunch at a local restaurant. In Ponta do Sol view old Colonial buildings and historic sites. Ponto do Sol takes its name from the nearby headland Ponta do Sol, the Northernmost point of Cape Verde. The former name Vila Dona Maria refers to Maria Pia of Savoy, queen of Portugal between 1862 and 1889. The Church Nossa Senhora do Livramento was built in 1894. There is a Jewish cemetery in the town.

Lunch, Grogue' (Rum) Distillery

After lunch, start the scenic drive to Paul Valley, the greenest part of the archipelago. No visit to Paul would be complete without the taste of the local rum called 'Grogue'. We will visit a traditional distillery and learn all about the 'Grogue' made from sugar cane and enjoy a pleasant Cape Verdean coffee/tea break.

Paul Valley

We then head to the beautiful and lush Paul Valley and encounter the locals living a pleasant rural life. We may see them working on their land and perhaps even planting and/or picking some of their crops. We complete the day with a drive along the moon like scenery and along the coastline back to the Porto Novo Harbor.

Island Views & Hike In Ribeira Grande

Depart Porto Novo, Santa Antao and travel in mini-vans, up into the mountains and through the interior of the island enjoying spectacular panoramic views along the former trading route to Ribeira Grande. Peaks up to 4,921 feet, make for good trekking, through deep green valleys. Enjoy incredible views of lush valleys, volcanic mountain formations, on our way over the mountain range. Often referred to as a cross between Morocco and the Himalayas, it has immense volcanic walls, seemingly inaccessible ravines, and perfectly farmed terraced valleys with banana and mango trees and fields of sugar cane.

Make a few photo stops before you descend through the mountains and down the other side of the island passing the colonial town of Ribeira Grande. Enter the Ribeira Grande valley and this is where you start your hike through splendid scenery, passing small settlements and traditional plantations. Take in the natural environment and enjoy a picnic lunch. Continue your exploratory tour to the village called 'Paul', situated in the Northeastern part of the island with a population of approx. 7,000 people. Here you will enjoy a refreshment and homemade pastry and then head back along the rugged and charming coastline to Porto Novo.

Ribeira Grande & The Green Valley

Cova Crater

Porto Novo, located in Southern Santa Antao, is the most populated settlement with about 10,000 inhabitants. Board mini-vans in Porto Novo and head out to the Crater called Cova (the origin of the island), mostly by vehicle to experience the nature of this beautiful island.

The tour takes you from the dry side of the island to the place where the island was formed, the Cova Crater, which today, due to the active cloud formations, is used mostly for farming.

Drive on the former Trade Route, which offers panoramic and mountain views as well as deep lush tropical valleys. Make photo stops en route and drive through Ribeira Grande and the Valley of Ribeira Valley, as well as the Paul Valley. Paul Valley is known for growing tropical fruits and vegetables and you may see people at work in the fields.

Grogue' (Rum) Distillery

Visit a traditional liqueur 'Grogue' (Rum) Distillery and watch the Grogue making process, before sampling the pride of the locals. This will also serve as a coffee/tea break and an opportunity to sample sweet local pastry.

Leaving Paul Valley, known to be the greenest of the archipelago, drive along the rugged and beautiful coastline back to Porto Novo.

Selada De Altomira & Agricultural Project

Depart from Porto Novo and enjoy spectacular volcanic landscapes on this half day tour of the most beautiful of the islands, Santa Antao (Portuguese for "Saint Anthony"). It is the Westernmost island of Cape Verde. At 785 km (303 sq mi), it is the largest of the Barlavento Islands group, and the second largest island of Cape Verde. Before approaching the driest part of the island turn off in the tour vehicle to the incredible valley of Ribeira das Patas to see the bizarre rock formations left behind from past volcanic eruptions. The island is of volcanic origin and very mountainous, characterized by two high plateaus and several steep river valleys. The Southern part of the islands has a desert climate, while the Northeast and the higher elevations are semi-arid.

Selada de Alto Mira. Lagedos

Enjoy the breath-taking view of two valleys at Selada de Alto Mira. Alto Mira is a settlement in the Northwestern part of the island. Its population is approximately 1,000. Continue on to quaint Lagedos, a settlement of approx. 560 residents, located on the South central part of the island of Santo Antao.

On our way back visit a socio-cultural tourism and agriculture project where you will have a coffee break with traditional specialties and a chance to stretch your legs while walking through the fields of tropical plants. Here you will also be able to buy local products such as jams, Grogue (traditional rum) and local handicrafts before heading back to the ship.
