Silversea Expedition Cruises To Playa Panama

Playa Panama

Costa Rica has an international reputation for its success in conserving and presenting its natural treasures. This success has been achieved by both National Parks and private individuals. Excellent examples of these can be accessed from the small tourist settlement of Playa Panama. Playa Panama is a low-key beach resort. Palo Verde National Park protects both a significant wetlands and rare dry tropical forests. The Park varies dramatically with the seasons but is always captivating. View more

During the May to November wet season the floodplain of the Tempisque River expands to create extensive marshes. As the December to April dry season progresses, water shrinks to isolated pools, concentrating wildlife. At any time of the year, birds to see include the Roseate Spoonbill, Glossy Ibis, Black-crowned Night Heron, Anhinga, and the Snail Kite with the extra-long hook on its beak for the extraction of molluscs from their shells (escargot anyone?). Jabiru Storks and Great Curassows are spectacular rarities to seek. Other fauna includes American Crocodiles, fresh-water turtles, Iguanas and White-nosed Coatis. In Costa Rica, some private estates have developed conservation principles for their businesses. They combine farming, and value adding to the farm produce, with providing wildlife refuges. This satisfies the owners’ interests in flora and fauna and provides additional revenue from tourists attracted to the nature. And who could argue against combining wildlife with a little local rum production?

Excursions in Playa Panama

Catamaran & Snorkel Tour

Start your day with a 4 hour catamaran tour sailing on the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Once on board, you will spend 1 hour sailing towards Playa Huevos also known as Egg Beach. This gorgeous white sand beach is only accessible by boat and hosts calm waters, soft sand and pristine clear water perfect for snorkling or a relaxing swim.

Afer relaxing time at the beach, start your 1 hour journey back to the pier watching out for the endless marine life such as dolphins, sea turtles, flying fish and more while your crew serves you the perfect tropical drink.

Liberia City Tour & folklore show

Often called the White City for its whitewashed colonial houses, Liberia offers a glimpse into the Costa Rica of yesterday and today. Join us on this pleasant city overview, conducted by air-conditioned motor coach.

The journey from the pier will take approximately one hour. On arrival, you will get a chance to see Liberia's unique buildings, constructed from bahareque, a type of clay similar to adobe that gives the houses a distinctive white hue. One of the most popular streets of the city is Calle Real, considered an architectural gem for its colonial houses adorned with Spanish tile roofs.

You excursion also includes a visit to Liberia's Municipal Market where an old fashion market where many Costa Ricans shop. Here you will observe and smell many tropical fruits, vegetables, fresh fish and meat. A combination of colours, forms and flavours that mix with the buzz and conversations of people. Other points of interest that you will discover include Liberia's churches, the Culture House, the Spanish-colonial Old Town and the local schools.

Our last stop will be at "Hacienda Ciudad Blanca" where local dancers will greet you with colorful costumes as you enjoy the folklore dances, learn about our traditions and taste some typical snacks.

Start your 1:15 drive back to the pier.

Wildlife and Traditions of Costa Rica

This full day experience will take you deep into Costa Rica highlighting the wildlife, food, traditions and culture of this beautiful country.

Once you arrive at Hacienda El Viejo, you will be welcomed with fresh fruits and refreshments at the Hacienda House, built in the 1800s and recently refurbished. This house of ancient lineage proudly represents the hard working spirit of those who lived and died in a faraway era of colonial Costa Rica.

During your time here you will get a glance of the "Sabanero" life style, by visiting a real old Sabanero house tasting delicious homemade snacks and coffee. You will also have the opportunity to prepare a hand-made Tortilla by yourself and learn how artisanal sugar cane candy is prepared.

Next you will head out on a 1-hour boat adventure on the Tempisque River, border the spectacular Palo Verde National Park that flows into the Gulf of Nicoya. Along the way, you will get a chance to see a variety of migratory birds from North and South America, Crocodiles, Iguanas and Monkeys.

After this enjoyable experience, you will delight your palate with delicious homemade regional Costa Rican styled lunch back at the Hacienda House. The views from the ample corridors will provide additional value to this experience as the savannahs and sugar cane fields extend before your eyes.

After lunch, start your 1:30 journey back to the ship.
