Excursions in PIEROWALL WESTRAY (Orkney Islands)

Hop-on Hop-off Shuttle Bus

Enjoy the chance to see Westray at your own pace. Shuttle buses will run throughout the day between Gills Pier, Pierowall and Noltland Castle.

A guide awaits you at Noltland Castle to provide information about this amazing 16th century structure, which stands as evidence of a challenging period in Scotland's history. This castle was never finished and was at the center of a great deal of political intrigue during the period of Mary Queen of Scots' reign.

Also see Pierowall, the largest settlement on Westray and boasting a significant collection of historic ruins and remains, dating as far back as the Neolithic and Iron ages as well as the Middle Ages. The large pagan Norse cemetery is a major draw for those fascinated by ancient history.

Links of Noltland

Visit the Links of Noltland, a beautifully preserved farming settlement dating from 3300 BC to 800 BC. There is an abundance of Neolithic remains including 12 buildings and the famous "Westray Wife," a famous Neolithic 5,000-year-old stone sculpture representing a woman.

Watch the excavations take place and see parts of the largest Bronze Age settlement in Orkney which includes homes, farms and a graveyard. Take the shuttle bus back to Pierowall where you can visit the Westray Heritage Centre and see the 3 stone figurines here which are believed to be the first depictions of human form in the UK.

Return to the ship by Silversea shuttle bus.

Westray Walk

Explore lovely Westray, one of the Scottish Orkney Islands and home to just 600 people in total. Depart from Gill's Pier on your guided walk to visit the highlights of Westray.

Begin by walking towards the village of Pierowall to see the local fishing industry, which is still based in the harbor. Continue along to Grobust, voted the best beach on the island, here there are tangle dykes which were used to dry kelp harvested over the winter before it was shipped away.

Head to Noltland Castle, a castle built by Gilbert Balfour, Mary Queen of Scots' Sheriff of Orkney, in 1560. Finish your tour with a visit to Lady Kirk, erected in 1674 with foundations dating from the 1200. From here Pierowall is a short distance away, you can visit at your leisure the Westray Heritage Centre, Hume Sweet Hume & the Art Gallery and return to the pier on foot or by Silversea shuttle bus.
