Silversea Luxury Cruises To PENGHU

PENGHU
PENGHU

Pretty Penghu. An archipelago of 64 islands about 50 km off the coast of mainland Taiwan, Penghu (pronounced “pun-hoo”) might lack the rich history of its neighbour Kinmen, but more than makes up for it with its stupendous natural beauty. View more

But that is not to say that Penghu is just all white sand beaches and verdant inland (although there is a lot of that), visitors to Penghu will be greeted by fantastically ornate temples, lively markets and shopping streets and an authentic of dose of Taiwanese culture that is unique to the islands. The main island itself is comprised of 4-5 islands linked by bridges, the longest and most famous being the Great Penghu Ocean Bridge that links XiYu and BaiSha island. The bridges themselves are one of the prides and joy of the archipelago, the Great bridge being the first of its kind in South East Asia, while the Xiying Rainbow Bridge, a 200-metre-long pedestrian bridge that spans a bay beside the Guanyinting Coast Park and is equipped with neon light the colours of the rainbow, is considered one of the more perfect spots to watch the sunset. The area is part of the Penghu National Scenic Area and as such, great emphasis is placed on the preservation of the archipelago’s natural and cultural resources, with tourism a very definite secondary priority. This has caused some friction between government officials who would like to develop the area and preservationists (the preservationists have the upper hand for now!). This could well be because the archipelago’s fantastic basalt column formations lure more than 200 species of migratory birds, making it an important spot for Asia’s birdwatchers.

Excursions in PENGHU

Island Exploration

Departing from Penghu port, start your day from Tongliang Great Banyan.

Tongliang Great Banyan

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to Tongliang Great Banyan. This sacred, massive banyan tree is more than 200 years old, and forms a canopy over the courtyard of Bao'an Temple in Tongliang Village, at the western tip of Baisha Island. The main trunk of the tree is not very impressive, but its aerial roots form a miniature forest of subsidiary trunks that covers an area of more than 789 square yards (660 square meters).

Penghu Great Bridge

Next, re-board your coach and cross the Penghu Great Bridge (Trans-Ocean Bridge), which spans the Houmen (Roaring Gate) Channel, and links the islands of Baisha and Xiyu. At approximately 8,182 feet (about 2,494 meters) in length, it is the first sea-crossing bridge in the Far East, and offers panoramic ocean vistas.

Erkan Historical House and Fruit Leaf Columnar Basalt

Your tour continues with a visit to the Erkan Historical House, an old, traditional-style house. Owned by the Chen clan, this large, exquisitely-crafted family home with many wings features relief carvings, windows, doors, and eaves in the classic southern Fujian style. Following your guided tour, a stop is made at the Fruit Leaf Columnar Basalt, a majestic basalt cliff.

Proceeding to Makung City for a visit to Zhongyang Old Street, the first street of Penghu.

Zhongyang Old Street, Four-Eye Well and Tianhou Temple

Located beside the Tianhou Temple, this street features old-style buildings. Take a guided stroll, browse the shops for gifts and souvenirs, and pass by the Central Hotel, the first hotel in Penghu. A visit is then made to the Four-Eye Well, built during the mid-Ming Dynasty over 400 years ago. Your last stop is at the Penghu Queen of Heaven Temple (Tianhou Temple). This architectural gem, built in 1592, is Taiwan's oldest and finest temple. Inside, marvel at prized Ching-era art, sculptures and other relics. Afterward, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Sights of the South Island

Departing from Penghu port, start your day from breathtaking view of Shanshui Beach.

Shanshui Beach

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to Shanshui Beach, a stretch of wind-blown sand. With its calm, blue waters, this is the finest swimming beach on the main island of Penghu. Shanshui Beach is now popular with surfers that it becomes the top choice beach in Penghu Islands. After a relaxing visit here, re-board your coach and head to Fogguei Village.

Fongguei Village

Fongguei Village is situated at the end of the Fongguei Peninsula, a long, narrow sea-curved gutter. The bottom of the gutter has been formed as a sea-eroded arch. At the top of the sea-eroded arch, a water column flows into a small pit. When the tides are in, the water flows into the sea-curved gutter. The air of the cave is compressed by the sea water, and produces the sound of tidal wave similar to that of a drum. After taking in lovely ocean vistas and listening to the sound of the sea waves, re-board your coach and proceed to Makung City for a visit to Zhongyang Old Street, the first street of Penghu.
