Silversea Luxury Cruises To PAROS

PAROS

As one of the lesser known islands in the Aegean Sea, Paros enjoys its reputation as being the underdog of the Cyclades. Often overshadowed by Mykonos to the north, or Santorini to the south, the savvy traveller knows this island paints one of the finest pictures of Greece that you’re ever likely to find. Arrival in Paros is postcard perfect and exactly as you imagine it. Cafes and tavernas line the pretty port, bougainvillea covers narrow streets, brightly painted fishing boats bob gently in the harbour. View more

If you arrive early enough, you’ll find the catches of the day being sold for pennies. All the touch points are there: evocative blue shuttered, white-washed houses, windmills and domed churches on the horizon, arid hillside above an azure bay that homes promise of fresh figs, olives and the seductive lullaby of cicadas. This image might seem clichéd but in Paros, it’s reality. If strolling the cobbled streets that snake into the village does not sustain your love of Greek history, then head for the Archaeological Museum in the centre of town. Paros has been inhabited since 3200 BC and has a past of maritime battles, followed by economic development and cultural flourishing. The island was well known for its fabulous marble, a fine example of which is the lovely Town Hall in Lefkes village (notably Venus de Milo was also crafted from Parian marble). Literary lovers will also know that Paros was the birthplace of Greek lyrical poet Archilochus, statues of whom can be found all over the island.

Interactive Greek Cooking Lesson

Next, meet your chef/instructor and begin your interactive cooking lesson. Learn about the wonderful world of Greek cuisine, and the herbs, fresh vegetables, meat, fruit, etc. utilised in its preparation. Afterward, your instructor teaches you the basics of preparing a full Greek lunch with easy-to-follow recipes, and invites you to participate in the preparation of a traditional Greek dish.

Lunch and Dessert with Wine

After your cooking lesson, you are served another aperitif, followed by the lunch you have helped to prepare. Your meal is accompanied by Greek salads, wine (red or white) or soft drinks, and dessert. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 40-minute drive back to the pier via the same route.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking for approximately 109 yards (about 100 metres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Paros Island Highlights

Explore the historic villages, castles and churches of Paros Island during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Paros, Parikia Town, Church of Panagia Ekatontapyliani, Kastro Castle, Free Time

Depart the pier for the short walk to the beautiful town of Parikia, the capital of Paros Island. Upon arrival, a visit is made to the famous Byzantine Church of Panagia Ekatontapyliani (Our Lady of a Hundred Doors), the holiest place in Paros. Tradition and history state that the church dates from the reign of Constantine the Great (280 A.D.-337 A.D) or Justinian (527 A.D.-565 A.D.). After its restoration in 1959, this church, the brightest jewel in the crown of Orthodoxy in the Aegean, became the third most important Christian building in Greece, after the Panayia Akheiropoietos and St. Demetrios in Thessaloniki. From here, walk to the Kastro Castle, Following a guided castle tour, some free time is made available to stroll about the charming streets of Parikia and browse its numerous little shops.

Lefkes Village, Town Hall, Naoussa Village, Venetian Castle

Next, board a coach for a panoramic tour of the island. En route, proceed to Lefkes, a beautiful, traditional village built amphitheatrically on the slopes of a mountain with wonderful panoramic vistas. The Town Hall is especially noteworthy, as it was built with the famous marble of Paros. Leaving Lefkes Village, re-board your coach and drive to the port of Naoussa, the most cosmopolitan village on the island. Upon arrival, take a stroll through the narrow streets of the village and visit its Venetian Castle. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.6 miles (about one kilometres), at times over uneven surfaces and hills, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and at the sites visited. Walking in Parikia Town is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Proper attire is required to enter the church; shorts and bare shoulders are not permitted.
