Silversea Expedition Cruises To Paranaguá

Paranaguá

Atlantic rainforest draws us inland from the Paranaguá port, and it is fun exploring it by boat, coach, foot or even up a tower! Much of the rich and diverse forests of Brazil’s Atlantic coast has been cleared but here the largest surviving tracts are preserved in national parks and reserves. The uniqueness and rarity of the forest’s biology led to the declaration of the Atlantic Forests of South Eastern Brazil World Heritage Area. View more

Dramatic rainforest-covered mountains have scenic wonders with names like Devil’s Throat Canyon and Véu da Noiva Waterfall, describing the ruggedness of the landscape. One way to experience the Atlantic forest is by boating along waterways amongst the trees. Local people still live with the forest and they help us understand their traditional links with the flora and fauna. Birds are a feature of the Atlantic forests with many species not found elsewhere. Private reserves with a focus on environmental education and leisure help visitors appreciate the forest. Walking trails, guides and a viewing tower help us to spot and identify the diverse avifauna and exuberant flora. It is hard to decide whether to try to photograph a hummingbird hovering at a flower or concentrate on the flower, because it doesn’t move. Within the forests of the coastal range are historic towns like Guaraqueçaba and Morretes. Here, we meet the colourful Brazilian culture. Colonial architecture, friendly people and a little relaxation with good local food are added to the day’s mix of experiences.

Excursions in Paranaguá

Birdwatching at Ekoa Park and visit to Morretes

Enjoy a full day excursion featuring equal parts nature and city. Embark on some expert-led birdwatching at Ekoa Park, followed by a tour of charming Morretes.

Departing the pier, transfer (one hour) aboard your coach to the Ekoa Park reserve, enjoying stunning panoramic views along the way. Ekoa Park is a private reservation of 238 hectares of Atlantic Rain Forest. It is a place dedicated to environmental education and immersion in nature. Meet your local guide and take your time discovering the birds and other wildlife as you hike in this pristine place.

Next transfer 20 minutes to downtown Morretes, a lovely small town facing the Nhundiaquara river. After dining on traditional fare over lunch, take your time strolling the city before the one-hour transfer back to the pier.

Guaraquecaba & Salto Morato

Explore the pristine nature and traditional villages surrounding Guaraqueçaba, located on a gorgeous bay with the peaks of Serra do Mar dominating the background. This tour takes you to one of the oldest towns in Parana, the city of Guaraqueçaba. Surrounding the city, over 70% of the land is nearly untouched forests still in a primary state and has not suffered significant changes by the hands of men.

Begin your full day tour with an early morning transfer by speedboat to Guaraqueçaba. This tour boat from Paranaguá to Guaraqueçaba provides you the chance to get to know traditional villages and see local people going about their daily lives.

Next transfer via a 30-minute bus ride to the Natural Reserve Salto Morato. This reserve opened to the public in 1996 and boasts 2.340 hectares of protected landscapes of rare beauty, with one of its main features the Salto Morato, a waterfall of approximately 100 meters. Hike 90 minutes one way to the waterfall and pass the fig tree of Rio do Engenho, whose root forms a "gate" over the width of six meters of the river.

The Reservation has educational trails, kiosks, a natural aquarium for bathing, a camping, a laboratory, a hostel for researchers, and a training center. Together with other conservation units of the area, it is accredited by UNESCO as a Natural Patrimony of Humanity. Make the return hike and arrive at the visitor center to enjoy a short presentation on the Atlantic Rain Forest Region conservation projects happening at the reserve.

Transfer 30 minutes back to downtown Guaraqueçaba and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. Take a short walking tour of the historical town center and then transfer by speedboat (1 hour) to the pier.

Rail Tour to Morretes

Explore the beauty of the Atlantic Rain Forest that hovers over Curitiba on this full day tour featuring one of most spectacular rail tours in the world. Your train connects Curitiba to the coast crossing the biggest area of Atlantic Rain Forest left in Brazil.

Depart the pier early and transfer 90 minutes to Curitiba, your first opportunity to get a sense of the magnificent forest. Then dive deeper into the rainforest on your approximately 3.5-hour rail trip. Learn about the history of this railroad during your scenic rail tour that concludes in Morretes, a historic town above Curitiba.

Arriving in Morretes, take some time to stroll this scenic colonial town after a traditional lunch. Try the local specialty "barreado," a delicious dish of stewed beef that is traditionally cooked in a clay pot with bacon, spices and topped with bananas. Barreado is translated as "covered in mud" due to the way the clay pots used to be sealed with mud for the cooking process.

After your leisure time in Morretes make the one-hour transfer to Paranguá port.
