Excursions in Paramaribo

Brownsberg Nature Park Tour

An early morning departure from Paramaribo will take you to the Brownsberg Nature Park located in the midst of the jungle on the Mazaroni plateau at a height of 500 meters. This 6000 acre Nature Reserve is a 3 hour drive from Paramaribo allowing you to enjoy the beauty of Suriname along the way.

Walking paths will take you past local flora and fauna through the rainforest, to beautiful waterfalls where you will enjoy unexpected panoramas over the far-stretching green treetops of the interior. The steady walk and climb through the forest will feel rewarding when you arrive at the waterfall where you will enjoy a natural water massage or just relax on the mountaintop and enjoy the unique jungle-sounds with a view of the power dam.

Spend the day enjoying the park with its waterfalls before you head back to the ship.

Frederiksdorp Day Tour

Frederiksdorp is a former 18th century coffee and cocoa plantation. The history of Frederiksdorp recalls both European and African traditions. It has its own character with surrounding plantations, fishing villages, sea beaches, mangrove forests, dolphins and long cycling and hiking trails. This former plantation with original plantation homes was once a police station which has been transformed into an attractive resort with comfortably furnished apartments and Wi-Fi facilities. There is also a swimming pool with a beautiful pool deck and a large river terrace. The estate is planted with fruit that you can pick yourself: oranges, mangoes, papayas and coconuts.

The plantation also has a good restaurant and well-stocked bar where you can enjoy carefully prepared meals. Upon arrival you will receive a warm welcome and your guide will take you on a walk through the grounds, explaining the history and culture as you go.

Jodensavanne Day Tour

Spend the day at Jodensavanne, the settlement of the first Portuguese-Jewish immigrants who came to Suriname in the 17th century fleeing persecutions from Spain. Once settled the Jews built thriving settlements, now home to one of the oldest synagogue in North America. The are a is also home to the oldest Jewish cemetery, including a separate cemetery for the African and mixed people.

During this 2 hour walking tour you will stop by a source of a nearby creek, said to have a healing effects in the 17th century. Along the river there are still several villages and small residential communities on abandoned Jewish plantations allowing you to truly take a walk back in time before you head back to the ship, a 1 hour drive from this community.

Paramaribo City & Commewijne Tour

Start your full day guided tour on foot along the most prominent historic locations in downtown Paramaribo. Visit and learn the history of Fort Zeelandia, the Presidential Palace, Independence Square and many other monuments, a true representation of the colonial history of Suriname. We will take a stroll pass the Waterkant, along the bank of the Suriname River, through the Palm Gardens and along the new boardwalk between the Gardens and the small river. Enjoy other interesting sites of the city like a mosque right next to a synagogue.

We proceed to the Commewijne district on the east of Paramaribo across the Suriname River making a stop at plantation Peperpot where the old coffee and cocoa factory, deputy-director's house and the old office are located. This former plantation is one of the oldest plantations in Surinamese history. Peperpot was established by the English and already existed before Suriname was conquered by the natives from Zeeland in 1667. This is one of the last plantations still in its former original state. On the plantation you can still see coffee and cocoa plants as well as an ancient shed and factory, the manager's residence and a kampong (workers' living area). Peperpot is also renowned for the many native birds which can be spotted as you walk by.

From Peperpot, we stop at the mini-museum of Marienburg, a former sugar plantation before enjoying a delicious local lunch. We then continue to the confluence of the Commewijne and Suriname Rivers at Nieuw Amsterdam. Here we will visit the outdoor museum Fort Nieuw Amsterdam. The large fortress was built as a defense for the plantations situated along the upper parts of both rivers.

After a full day of history, delicious food and a touch of nature, make your way back to the ship.

Pepperpot Birding Tour

Take an early morning drive to Peperpot Nature Park, an old coffee plantation that has been restored over time. Start your 3 hour walk with a local guide who will lead you through the lush forest passing by coffee bushes and under the trees that protect the coffee against the sun, an Erythrina species not native to Suriname. When this tree is in bloom you will see many orange flowers bringing a lot of hummingbirds to feed.

Peperpot is a very good place to find the endemic Arrowhead Piculet, Blood-coloured Woodpecker and the beautiful Black-capped Donacobius. Seldom missed is the beautiful shining Green-tailed Jacamar, relatively rare raptors such as Crane Hawk, Slender-billed Kite and Hook-billed Kite. Many of the smaller species of fauna can be seen and the Agouti with monkeys usually not far away.

End your tour just before lunch time, taking a 1 hour drive back to the ship.
