Silversea Luxury Cruises To OKHOTSK

OKHOTSK
OKHOTSK

Okhotsk is a town on the northern shore of the Sea of Okhotsk. The settlement started in the mid-17th’s century after the Russians had first reached the Pacific some 95 kilometers to the southwest of the actual town. Okhotsk was started next to the Okhota River as transport at that time was by rivers from the interior. The settlement gained importance when Peter the Great decided to start ship-building in Okhotsk. Vitus Bering visited Okhotsk during his two expeditions into the Bering Sea and towards America. The original location was not suitable for the purpose of a harbor and the town was moved twice to eventually be relocated next to the Kukhtuy River, some 9 kilometers to the east of the actual mouth of the Okhota River. When in the mid-19th’s century the administration of the Russian-American Company was moved southeast to Ayan and the seat of the Okhotsk Military Flotilla (renamed then as the Siberian Flotilla) was changed to Petropavlovsk, the decline of Okhotsk was inevitable. Today a small airport connects Okhotsk with other cities. The sea is only ice-free from May to November, yet Okhotsk exports salmon and other fish. Largha seals are attracted by the fish to the river mouths, and whales have been seen offshore. The town has still some 4,000 inhabitants, partly Russians and partly Evens, a local ethnic group. A small but fascinating museum has an impressive taxidermy collection of birds on display –including a Steller Sea Eagle hanging from the ceiling.
