Silversea Luxury Cruises To KOMODO ISLAND

Komodo Dragon

Komodo, the volcanic island of giant lizards, lies 320 miles (515 kilometres) east of Bali. Komodo is 25 miles (40 kilometres) long and 12 miles (19 kilometres) wide; its parched hills ascend to a height of 2,410 feet (734 metres). Komodo is home to a community of some 2000 people who make their living primarily from fishing. The island is the centrepiece of the Komodo National Park, where you will find the most tangible legacy left behind from the Jurassic Era. View more

Komodo Island was little-known and the Komodo dragons were only a myth until the giant lizards were scientifically described in 1912 . Extinct almost everywhere else, the island attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world who come to see the Komodo dragons in their natural habitat. Komodo National Park has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve. The Komodo dragon’s great bulk and weight are its most unique characteristics; even hatchlings average 20 inches (51 centimetres) in length. The adult male can reach 10 feet (3 metres) and weigh up to 330 pounds (150 kilos). Females attain only two-thirds of this size, and lay up to 30 eggs at a time. With their saw-like teeth, these fierce creatures are able to rip apart a deer, goat or wild pig. The animals have an uncanny sense of smell, and are considered among the world's most intelligent reptiles. They are quite agile over short distances, and can move swiftly to capture their prey. The Indonesian Directorate of Nature Conservation (PPA) administers Komodo National Park. Park Rangers must escort all visitors; independent exploration of the park is not permitted.

Excursions in KOMODO ISLAND

Expedition activities with Silversea Expedition team

After a dry landing onto a woodden pontoon enjoy a long (3km-1.9m) or short (0.8km-0.5m) nature guided walk through this intriguing tropical island, looking out for birds and their most famous inhabitants, the Komodo Dragons. These are easy nature walks, with some loose terrain, exposed roots and muddy areas at times.

Arrive at the Komodo Jetty which is the headquarters of the Komodo National Park. The world-renowned wildlife island of Komodo is the desolate domain of a fierce and very rare species of reptile that bears the looks of a prehistoric dinosaur and is appropriately called a Komodo Dragon. A clear indication of Komodo National Park's biological importance is its ranking with UNESCO as both a World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve.

The Komodo Dragon is thought to be the remnant of a once widespread ancient order of monitor lizards. Today, fewer than 300 of this protected species remains and its continuing existence hangs in the balance. Often measuring up to 11 feet in length and weighing in at over 300 pounds, this ominous looking creature, with its sharp, saw-like teeth and menacing eyes, leaves a lasting impression on all who have had the opportunity to see it up close. Living on deer and wild pigs that inhabit the island, it is surprisingly agile when covering short distances and a good swimmer.

Meet the local rangers and begin your walk. Traveling in small groups with the Expedition Team and park rangers, make your way along paths that lead through pockets of thorny vegetation and dry tropical grasslands to the viewing point.

Receive expert commentary on the other notable species that inhabit the island, as well as the rich surrounding marine environment.

Komodo - Dragon's Lair

This outing on Komodo Island offers a rare opportunity to observe the legendary Komodo dragon in the wild.

Upon tendering ashore, park rangers accompany you on a walk to the dragon-viewing area. The hike along narrow paths requires walking in single file on compact mud or loose gravel. Watch out for roots and tree branches criss-crossing your way. The trees provide limited shade. At the viewing point, some time is made available to discretely observe the reptiles.

After walking back to the ranger station via the shorter route, you can learn more about the island's fearsome creatures and shop for souvenirs before returning to the jetty and transferring back to the ship.

Guests not on tour may only visit the souvenir shop in the tender pier area.
