Silversea Expedition Cruises To King George Island

King George Island

As the largest of all the South Shetland Island, King George is considered the gateway to Antarctica. At just 120 kilometres from the Antarctic Peninsula and the only airport in the South Shetlands, it is the connection between “real life” and “Antarctic life”. More than 10 different nations have year-round or summer-only scientific research stations on the island (considering that 90% of the island is covered by snow and ice, that is quite an achievement!). Maintaining a base on the island allows membership of the Antarctic Treaty. View more

There is even a Russian Orthodox church, with a permanent on-site priest. The island might be home to a few international scientists, but they are very much outnumbered by the diverse wildlife that considers King George Island rightfully theirs. Adelie, Chinstrap and Gentoo Penguins all commute to and from the Antarctic peninsula from the island, while Weddell and leopard seals are regular visitors and can be spotted either in the water or on the shore. Naturally, this brings a huge amount of birdlife: skuas and southern giant petrels are regular summer residents, attracted by the warm climate (warm being a relative term, average temperature is between 1.5 and -6.5˚C). The island was named after King George III after British explorer discovered it in 1819. Since then the island has been claimed by both Chile (1940) and Argentina (1943), but remains part of British Antarctic Territory.

Cradled by the majestic peaks of Paine Massif, you'll explore the region's vast and remarkable landscapes, from the Magellan sub-polar forests to the magnificent Salto Grande waterfall which empties into glistening turquoise lakes below. Embrace the exquisite natural beauty during this three-night wild and wonderful adventureof the remarkable Chilean Patagonia.

Please check with your travel professional for details regarding visa requirements for Chile. Proper travel documentation is the sole responsibility of the guest.

Please note: Participants in this program should schedule their departing flight from Punta Arenas, Chile International Airport.

DAY 1 - KING GEORGE ISLAND/ PUERTO NATALES

After breakfast onboard the ship, disembark, and transfer to the airport for your flight to Punta Arenas. Upon arrival, continue on to Puerto Natales for a short 45 minute flight. Transfer to your hotel for check-in, with some free time to freshen-up before the nightly festivities of pre-dinner cocktails. Meet with your Silversea Expedition team and local guides for a quick debriefing on what to expect for tomorrow's itinerary.

Overnight accommodations at the Costaustralis - Puerto Natales

DAY 2 - PUERTO NATALES/ BALMACEDA GALCIERS

After breakfast at the hotel, meet your guide and head to the pier in Puerto Natales. For this excursion, one can only access the glaciers by sea through the Seno de Ultima Esperanza. Starting at the Puerto Natales pier observe the flora and the fauna of the fjords, sea lions, cormorants, condors, and gulls. Along the coast, the ship approaches a rocky area, where sea lions are known to mate during the summer months. On the eastern slope of the Monte Balmaceda, the colossal Balmaceda glacier comes into view, presently recoiling like almost all the other glaciers of the planet.

After docking at the Toro pier, hike 1,000 m. across a native forest until reaching the shores of a lagoon dotted with icebergs. Here one will see the beautiful Serrano glacier. Enjoy a Patagonian lunch at the end of the tour then take a scenic drive to the Torres Del Paine National Park, where your next hotel accommodation is located. Enjoy an authentic Chilean dinner at the hotel this evening, where delicious gastronomy meets a rustic, elegant ambience. Wind down with a refreshing Pisco Sour or take in the richness of some of the best local wines Chile has to offer at an exclusive Silversea event.

Overnight accommodations at the Lago Grey Hotel-Torres Del Paine National Park

DAY 3 - TORRES DEL PAINE/ PUNTA ARENAS

After breakfast in the hotel, start your tour of the breathtaking Torres del Paine National Park. Visitors will be able to enjoy diverse landscapes from the Magellan forest to the vast Patagonia steppe. Take in the local fauna and view two different species of mammal: the Patagonian guanaco, a South American camel and relative to the llama, and the endemic Darwin's rhea (Ñandu), relative to the African ostrich. Once in the park, a Biosphere Reserve with a surface over 242.000 hectares, the landscape changes dramatically with its blue lakes populated by marine birds surrounded by the imposing granite peaks dominating the area. Turquoise lakes, waterfalls and mountains covered by ice is the predominant landscapes one can see inside the park. Take a short walk, to the Salto Grande waterfall; which connects two big lakes inside the park; Nordenskjold and Pekoe.

Enjoy lunch before transferring to the airport for your short flight back to Punta Arenas. Upon arrival transfer to the hotel where dinner and the evening's cocktail party await.
