Silversea Luxury Cruises To KHASAB

KHASAB

It may be known as the Norway of Arabia - in reference to the spectacular fjords that cut and shape the Musandam Peninsular - but Khasab's scorching sun and desert landscape is a constant reminder that you're a long way from Europe. Sitting isolated on Oman’s Northern coast - cut off by a slice of the United Arab Emirates' territory - this small city has a dreamy, introverted atmosphere - until you head out in a 4X4, to slip and slide across its rip-roaring mountain scenery that is. Explore the incredible desert fjords and folding sandy mountains by boat, and be on the look out for the rubbery noses of bottlenose and humpback dolphins poking through the water. Legendarily friendly and curious, don’t be surprised to see them swimming through the blue waters with you, displaying all of their aquatic athletic prowess as you sail by traditional wooden dhow. Cruise up along the Strait of Hormuz, between Oman and Iran, and marvel at the long stretches of dramatic golden fjord scenery. Back on land, learn of local history at Khasab Castle, which was originally built in the 17th century by the Portuguese, to defend the narrowing of the Persian Gulf at this highly strategic point. It's accompanied by a museum, which depicts local life here back through the ages. Or drive out to Bedouin villages and hold on tight during the white-knuckle drive up to the viewpoint at Khawr Najd - where sweeping views of the flayed fjords unveil themselves.

Excursions in KHASAB

Adventure Trip to Harim Mountain

Enjoy a ride by 4 WD on this half-day excursion, to the highest mountain of Musandam, Jebel Harim (meaning Mountain of Women) which is approximately 2,087 metres (6847 feet) high. You will experience some of the most stunning views in Oman including the terraced mountain villages and lush Acacia forests and Wadis.

Your tour begins with a brief introduction before climbing aboard your 4 WD vehicle headed for some of Oman's most stunning sceneries. Stops along the way allow you to gather with the guide to learn about the culture, history and geography of this area.

After about an hour's drive, pause at the Bedouin village of Sayah for photographs. Located at an elevation of 3,608 feet (1,100 metres), the village is known as one of the most picturesque of the Musandam Peninsula. Continue with the drive up the mountain to admire the grand panoramic view from its summit.

The return journey includes a brief stop at the Khawr Najid viewpoint overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Your tour concludes back at the pier to re-join your ship.

Fjord Dhow Cruise

The Musandam Peninsula has an abundance of sheltered fjords, some only connected to the mainland by narrow cliffs. Fjords, or khors, created by fragmented rock stretching claw-like into the sea and massive overshadowing cliffs towering above are magnificently reflected in the water below. Explore these khors from a traditional-style dhow, or motorised sailing boat.

Board the dhow either from alongside the ship or the pier. For many centuries, boats that sailed on the Indian Ocean have been called dhows. Traditional dhows are known for two distinctive features - the triangular or lateen sail, and secondly, its stitched construction of hull boards sewn together with fibres, cords or thongs. The dhow today is covered, with a ladder to allow you to take a dip in the sea.

Cruise toward Musandam's longest and most spectacular fjord, which is often referred to as 'Norway of the Middle East'. Admire the breath-taking scenery, with mountains over 2,000 feet (610 metres) high rising straight from the sea and calm, turquoise waters contrasting with creamy white limestone cliffs.

Along the way, pass the ruins of Telegraph Island, formerly a British telegraphic cable base from 1864-69. Cruise by small fishing villages.

While the dhow anchors, enjoy a swim, snorkel or just sit back and sip soft drinks, tea or coffee while admiring the scenery. Keep an eye out for dolphin, often sighted in the area.

Then, cruise back to the Khasab jetty.

Khasab & Bukha Forts

This half-day excursion provides an introduction to the Musandam Peninsula and its small capital of Khasab, situated on its northern tip. Depart the pier in air-conditioned coaches and begin the tour with a visit to the town's main attraction, the Khasab fort.

Khasab Fort

This impressive stronghold was built by the Portuguese in the 17th century when they were seeking dominion over the maritime trade in the Strait of Hormuz. Teak wood from India was used for its construction and the roof was fashioned from a mix of palm leaves, clay and stone. The structure you see today is the result of extensive restoration work carried out since the late 20th century. A circular building in the centre of the fort served as a kind of back up defence for additional protection. From the site of the fort you can enjoy excellent views and photo opportunities.

Bukha Fort and Tower

Leaving Khasab, drive along the panoramic coastal road to Bukha, which borders the Emirate of Ras al Khaima. During the approximately one-hour drive, see spectacular scenery and make several stops for photographs of this ruggedly beautiful region. Upon arrival in Bukha, visit the 200-year-old fort. Its attractive location overlooks the sea and includes a backdrop of mountains. In addition to the fort, tour one of the watchtowers rising above the small village of Bukha.

From here, begin the return drive to Khasab with a stop at the Esra Hotel for refreshments before concluding the tour back at the pier.
