Silversea Expedition Cruises To Ilha de Anchieta

Ilha de Anchieta

Times change. What once was a place of punishment is now a destination for pleasure. Ilha de Anchieta is the site of a former presidio (prison) with a violent history. The ruins of the presidio are now included in the Ilha de Anchieta State Park which also protects the island’s Atlantic forest and unspoilt coastline. Walking tracks access views, beaches and give unmissable contact with the Atlantic forest, adorned with palms, orchids and bromeliads. Walks include the Saco Grande Trail (2.8 km round trip), the Praia do Sul Trail (2. View more

2 km round trip) and the Represa Trail (0.7 km round trip). The island has a tragic past. In 1926 Bulgarian immigrants were housed here but 100 died from eating untreated cassava. Japanese immigrants were imprisoned at the presidio in the aftermath of World War II. In 1952 the prisoners were criminals and political detainees. They were treated so badly they rioted, resulting in a bloodbath of 118 deaths. The prison closed shortly after. You can wander reflectively around the large prison and the nearby barracks and village where much fighting took place. The clear waters allow good snorkelling to look for fish, like the Atlantic Goliath Groper. Swimming Green Turtles may even be seen from the trails. The Sao Paulo Zoo introduced several Brazilian animals to the island. Look for capybaras, marmosets and coatis. Of course, birds are a feature in Atlantic forests, with tanagers and hummingbirds bright highlights. Today you don’t need to be a criminal to visit the island.

Excursions in Ilha de Anchieta

Dam Trekking

The Ilha Anchieta State Park covers the island and is home to many terrestrial and oceanic species, many endangered. Despite the lush greenery & flora of the island the area is most known for the prison constructed in 1902 now deserted.

On this 3 hour hike you will walk a short distance of 700m on a medium difficulty route filled with native flora, bromeliads and orchids passing by the "Past & Present" lookout which offers a panoramic view to the Ruins of the Prision and the white sandy beaches of Palms Cove. The trekking ends at Ilha Anchieta Dam before you make your way back to the ship.

Saco Grande Trekking

Discover the island on this 3 hour medium level hike starting at Prison beach, walking through a research and studies area designed to keep the eco system of the island going. On the way watch as the vegetation reclaims the houses at the old military village ending the hike on a lookout point. Here you can get a chance to see neighboring islands and bask in the view of the deep-green ocean. On sunny days it is even possible to see marine turtles in their natural environment!

Be sure to take in all the nature and beauty this view has to offer before you make your way back to the ship.

South Beach Trekking

This unique trail was previously used only by fisherman and locals now open to visitors offering rare glimpses of birds undisturbed in their natural habitats and enviable views of the beautiful green waters of the coast.

Take a trip back in time on this 3-hour medium level hike through the Atlantic forest where you will walk by crumbled walls of history reclaimed by vines or spot a rare bird, part of the islands animal repopulation efforts. End the hike at the stunning, picturesque beaches of Palm Cove before heading back to the ship.
