Silversea Luxury Cruises To HUSAVIK

HUSAVIK

There's simply nowhere better than Husavilk - the European capital of whale watching - for getting up close and personal with the majestic giants of the ocean. Feel the awe as whales breach the waves around you, before gulping in air and plunging away with almighty tale flicks. Pretty Husavik is framed by the majestic Húsavíkurfjall mountain, which swells up behind, creating a stunning backdrop for the town's tiny wooden warehouses, cherry red houses and undulating fishing ships. The little wooden church has been a beacon of light, guiding tired fishermen back to the shores of Iceland's oldest settlement, since 1907. Let the wind rip through your hair and the sea speckle your face, as you ride waves out among the region's almighty marine creatures, who throw their weight around so spectacularly. Sail among gentle giants in Shaky Bay, spotting humpbacks, minke whales and the world's biggest – blue whales. You may also see teams of smaller white-beaked dolphins skipping across the waves, displaying the full range of acrobatic skills. The town's whale museum is an interesting journey through Iceland's relationship with the sea giants, while its restaurants serve up local specialities – taste juicy reindeer burger and plokkfiskur, a buttery mash of local fish. Hikes and horseback rides into the surrounding countryside can take you up around Lake Botnsvatn, to views down from the slopes of the Húsavíkurfjall - where purple spired lupin flowers spill down amongst the emerald slopes. From the summit, look out over views of the bay, reaching out to the crumpled snowy peaks beyond. Or feel the full force of this land of natural power, at Dettifloss Waterfall, one of Europe's most powerful, thrashing flumes.

Excursions in HUSAVIK

Gjástykki Super Jeep Tour

Explore the volcanic craters, lava flows and geothermal fields of Iceland on the road less-travelled during this panoramic, full-day sightseeing excursion via Jeep.

Húsavík, Þeistareykir, Geothermal Fields, Mud Pots, Fumaroles, Þeystareykirbunga, Viti Crater

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive to Þeistareykir, a high-temperature geothermal field with mud pots and fumaroles, nested amidst the lush green landscape. After a photo stop here, re-board your coach and drive across Þeystareykirbunga, a low, sloping 11,000-year-old shield volcano, en route to Litlavíti (Víti Crater) a circular, pit-crater with sheer rock walls.

Gjástykki, Volcanic Wall, Fissures, Krafla Volcanic System, Black Lava Floes, Craters, Lava Tubes

Next, drive down to the Atlantic rift valley of Gjástykki. On either side, you can see an approximately 66-foot (about 20-metre) wall riddled with fissures of the Krafla volcanic system, and black lava flows from the Krafla fires of 1975-1984. Even three decades after eruption the lava looks untainted, as it were brand new, being nearly devoid of any vegetation. Here, you are surrounded by craters, lava tubes, and an endless variety of lava forms and sculptures.

Ghost Grounds, Reykjahverfi District, Hólasandur

Leaving Gjástykki, drive through Draugagrundir (Ghost Grounds) towards the Reykjahverfi District, where farmers have been utilizing geothermal heat for horticulture since the late-19th century, then on to Hólasandur. From here, commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Jewels of the North

Experience volcanic energy and natural wonders during this full-day tour such as: vast lava fields, bubbling hot pools and hissing fumaroles; craters and lunar-landscapes; historical waterfalls and internationally acclaimed bird life; sweeping valleys and green pasture lands.

This tour offers the opportunity to see the major highlights accessible from Husavik on a one-day trip.

Godafoss Waterfalls

The 'Waterfalls of the Gods' is not only one of Iceland's most beautiful waterfalls, but also a historical site named after the pagan idols, which a chieftain threw into the falls when Iceland adopted Christianity. After a photo stop, proceed to the Lake Myvatn district.

Lake Myvatn

This area is famous for its grandiose scenery and bird life. It is also one of the most volcanically active regions on earth. Nowhere else in Iceland can you see the same combination of craters, fresh lava fields, hot springs, geysers and bubbling mood pools. Take a walk to explore several pseudo craters, before continuing to Dimmuborgir, a moonscape of mesmerizing lava fields.

Dimmuborgir

View this dramatic lava landscape of strange formations, jagged columns and arches before proceeding for lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, drive to the final destination of the day, Namaskard geothermal fields.

Namaskard

This stunning geothermal fields are located next to the Namafjall Mountain. The area is covered with mud pools, steam vents, sulphur deposits, boiling springs and fumaroles.

Passing through Reykjahlid Village, continue along the shores of Lake Myvatn and then head back to Husavik and the ship.

Myvatn Nature Baths

Indulge your senses amidst a few of Iceland's many natural and geothermal wonders during this invigorating, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Myvatn Nature Baths

The Myvatn Nature Baths overlook Lake Myvatn, and offer guests a unique experience in which they are completely bathed by nature. During your visit, take a relaxing dip amidst clouds of steam and a luxurious swim in a pool of geothermal water drawn from depths of up to 1.55 miles (about 2.5 kilometres). The baths contain a unique blend of minerals, silicates and geothermal microorganisms. The warm, soothing waters of the Myvatn Nature Baths are beneficial to skin and spirit alike, creating a sense of well-being and a lasting memory of your visit.

Facilities

Facilities include a reception area and cafeteria, changing rooms and showers for up to 120 guests, three natural steam baths accommodating up to 50 bathers at a time, and an approximately 53,819 square-foot (about 5,000-square-metre) outdoor geothermal bathing pool maintained at a constant temperature of approximately 100ºF-104ºF (about 38ºC-40ºC). Due to its chemical composition, undesired bacteria and vegetation do not thrive in the lagoon, making chlorine or any other disinfectant redundant. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the picturesque drive back to the pier.

Whale Watching & Whale Museum

Experience the magnificent wildlife and scenery of Iceland during this picturesque, half-day excursion aboard a whale-watching boat.

Skjalfanda Bay and Whale-Watching

Depart the pier for the short, guided walk to the whale-watching boat. After embarking the boat, take a scenic ride along Skjalfanda Bay, one of the premier locales in the world for observing the friendly minke whale. These normally timid mammals have been known to approach the whale-watching boats, and surface right alongside them.

Whales are often encountered within 20 minutes of leaving the harbour, and appear to take as much interest in humans as we do in them. Boisterous, white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises frequently join the party, and sometimes humpback and other large whales are spotted.

Whale Museum

Upon our return to Húsavík, disembark the boat and take a short stroll to the Whale Museum. Here, take an opportunity to learn more about these fascinating, gentle giants of the ocean on your own. Following your visit, commence the short walk back to the pier.
