Silversea Luxury Cruises To Cruise the Bosporus

Cruise the Bosporus

Cruise the mythic Bosphorus, the 19-mile waterway that defines – and divides – Istanbul. On the European side, the Topkapi Palace presides over the southern limit, while the minarets of great mosques puncture the sky. On the Asian side: the Selimiye Barracks, where Florence Nightingale was based, or the small but oh-so-beautiful jewel of the Ottoman Empire, Semsi Pasa mosque. View more

The river has been a strategic link for centuries, separating the two continents with the Black Sea and Russia to the north and the Mediterranean – via the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean – in the south. The river was crucial to the Soviet Navy during the Cold War and even today, the river is one of the busiest in the world: around 48,000 ships pass through this strait annually, three times denser than the Suez Canal traffic and four times denser than the Panama Canal. Yet, you would never imagine it to be such an important thoroughfare: amateur fishermen cast their lines into the water while families buy chestnuts or mussels from stalls along the waterfront, permeating the waterfront with a feeling of yesteryear. The etymology of the word is particularly interesting: coming from the Tracian word for “passage of cow”, the river was named after Io (lover of Zeus) was turned into a cow to protect her from Hera’s (Zeus’ wife) jealousy. Io – in the form of a cow – fled to the Bosphorus to escape, but Hera sent a swarm of flies to disturb her, eventually drowning her in the adjacent sea. Today, we know this sea as the Ionian Sea.
