Silversea Expedition Cruises To CAPE NAVARIN

Cape Navarin is a peninsula found at the southern end of the Navarin Mountain Massif stretching into the Bering Sea to the south of Gavriila Bay and to the east of Meynypilgyno. Mapped and named in 1828 by Fyodor Lidtke, the cape is not only considered to be Chukotka’s but actually Russia’s stormiest place, boasting Russia's highest annual average wind speeds and highest annual storm and occurrence rate and a mean annual temperature of -4 degrees Celsius. Cape Navarin (and its surrounding area of almost 2,000,000 hectares) is one of 40 Important Bird Areas with one of the largest seabird concentrations in the Russian Far East. Over 1% of the world population of Northern Fulmars, Black-legged Kittiwakes, Common Guillemots and Brünnich’s Guillemots were estimated to breed there in 2016. Grey whales, orcas and other cetaceans are frequenting the waters around Cape Navarin and large temporary colonies of walrus can be found in the vicinity to the west.
