Mighty palm trees - that look like exploding fireworks - stand tall in Plaza de Mayo, the heart of this sprawling cosmopolitan capital of 48 barrios. The square has served as the stage for many fundamental events in this country’s history, and the location where the seeds of independence were sewn continues to serve as the city’s gathering point - and is a place for solidarity, rebellion and revolution. The presidential Casa Rosada’s salmon-hued Palatial Palace borders the plaza, while nearby Museum Nacional de Bellas Artes houses the largest collection of public art in Latin America. Teatro Colón, the opulent 1908 opera house, is one of the world’s finest venues - musical performance here take on an ethereal quality, with the exceptional acoustics transferring every quiver of bow, and tremor of vocal cord, to the audience in spine-tingling clarity. The gargantuan, precipitous terraces of Bombonera Stadium form another of Buenos Aires’s incredible venues, and a wall of noise emanates from it when Boca Juniors take to the field. Juicy steak and punchy Malbec flow in the city’s parrillas – steakhouses - while glitzy bars and thumping nightclubs welcome revellers late into the night. It’s not just the meat that sizzles here either - tango dancers fill milongas - dance halls - to strut passionately until the early hours. Sip steaming mate, the country’s national drink, shop in covered markets, and explore Cementerio de la Recoleta - a city of grand graves and intricate memorials honouring presidents, politicians and notable Argentine heroes from history.

A Day in the Pampas

Embrace the exquisite beauty and flavours of the Argentinean 'Pampas' during this relaxing, full-day visit to the Estancia Rosario de Areco (or Similar). The Pampas of South America are a grassland biome. They are flat, fertile plains that cover an area of 300,000 sq. miles (777,000 sq. Kilometers), from the Atlantic Ocean to the Andes Mountains. It is found primarily in Argentina and extends into Uruguay.

San Antonio de Areco

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 2-2.25-hour drive to the charming town of San Antonio de Areco, located 70 miles (112 kilometres) northwest of Buenos Aires. San Antonio de Areco is recognised as the centre of the 'Pampas' tradition and land of the 'gaucho', one of the cultural symbols of Argentina. Farms, or 'estancias', form the rural backbone of Argentina; these grand estates raise cattle and farm horses for sport, mainly polo.

Upon arrival at the Estancia Rosario de Areco, you are greeted by the owners with a traditional welcome of 'empanadas', or small meat pies, accompanied by local wine or juice. Following a restroom stop, take a tour of the 'estancia' before sitting down to a traditional barbecue lunch and dessert, with entertainment provided by local dancers. After lunch, watch a folkloric 'gaucho' show and typical ring race, or 'Carrera de Sortijas'.

Your tour concludes with some free time at your leisure. Afterward, re-board the coach and commence the approximate 2-2.25-hour return drive to the pier. A restroom stop is made en route.

El Calafate Glaciers

The panoramic town of El Calafate is situated on the southern border of Lake Argentina, near the edge of the southern Patagonian Ice Field, in the Argentine province of Santa Cruz. This small, picturesque village is surrounded by beautiful trees, with no high buildings and plenty of colourful gardens that make El Calafate an oasis in the middle of the barren Patagonian landscape. However, El Calafate is mainly known as the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park, home to the massive Upsala and Perito Moreno glaciers, whose icy, ever-shifting landscape is ideal for hiking and sightseeing. Experience the spectacular glacial and mountain beauty of southern Patagonia in a unique and exciting new way during this unforgettable, four-night overland excursion to El Calafate. Following an airport transfer and flight from Buenos Aires to El Calafate, transfer to the 4-star Posada Los Alamos Hotel for check-in, with dinner at the renowned La Tablita restaurant. Following an overnight stay and breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the Punta Bandera Pier and take a picturesque boat-ride on Lake Argentino. Along the way, pass by spectacular mountains and icebergs, including the Upsala Glacier, one of the largest in Los Glaciares National Park. Following your boat-ride, disembark at Estancia Cristina and join your driver/guide in a 4WD vehicle for a breath-taking ride along the Feruglio Cordon, then take a short walk on glacier eroded terrain en route to the Upsala Glacier Lookout Point. Here, take in sweeping views of Lake Guillermo, the imposing Upsala Glacier's eastern front and the southern Patagonian Continental Ice Field. Following your visit, return to your 4WD vehicle on-foot, then commence the drive back to the Estancia Cristina for a barbecued lamb lunch. After lunch and some free time at your leisure, embark your boat for the ride back to the Punta Bandera Pier, then transfer to your hotel via private coach. Following dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel, transfer to your awaiting boat at the Bajo Las Sombras Pier. Upon arrival, take an incredibly scenic boat-ride to see the Perito Moreno Glacier and Andean Forest. Along the way, stroll along the walkways and footbridges in front of this majestic glacier, and hear the cracks and roars of Perito Moreno. Next, take a guided mini-trek over the Perito Moreno Glacier's millenarian ice field and see the magnificent glacier's front wall, then walk along the lake shore to the edge of the glacier. Guests unable to participate in the mini-trekking portion of the tour may opt for an approximately one-hour boat-ride along the De Los Tempanos Canal of Argentino Lake to admire the northern face of the Perito Moreno Glacier from the water. Next, don a pair of crampons and begin your exhilarating glacier walk. Explore the fascinating landscape of the glaciers; streams, small lagoons, gullies, crevasses, and plenty of ice formations of the most incredible blues. At the conclusion of your visit, transfer back to the hotel. Following a Patagonian dinner at the 'Mako, Fuego y Vino' restaurant and an overnight stay at the Posada Los Alamos Hotel, check-out and transfer to the airport for your scheduled flight to Trelew. Upon arrival, transfer to Puerto Madryn for an overnight stay at the Hotel Territorio. After breakfast at the hotel, check-out and transfer to the Estancia San Lorenzo, a traditional sheep ranch. About the Perito Moreno Glacier

The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the world's few remaining advancing glaciers, currently grinding its way down the Cordillera directly into an arm of the enormous Lago Argentino. About every three years, the glacier cuts off the flow of water into the lake, resulting in an immense accumulation of pressure as the water behind the glacier rises.

Perito Moreno Glacier, Patagonian Steppe and Andean Forest, Walkways and Footbridges

During this full-day excursion to see the Perito Moreno Glacier, travel across the Patagonian Steppe and Patagonian Andean Forest, home to the distinctive notro tree with its intense red flowers in spring. Upon arrival, take a stroll along the walkways in front of the glacier, which forms the source basin of Argentina and Chile glaciers. Walk the footbridges to catch majestic views, and hear the cracks and roars of the incredible living mass that is Perito Moreno.

Magnificent glacier wall, ice field and Lake Argentino

With an approximately 3.1-mile-long (about five-kilometre-long) front wall soaring approximately 180 feet (about 60 meters) above the lake and approximately 99 square-mile (about 257-square-kilometer) ice field surface, the Perito Moreno Glacier currently grinds its way down the mountains directly into an arm of the enormous Lake Argentino.

Mini-trek over the Perito Moreno Glacier's millenarian ice field

Next, take a guided mini-trek over the Perito Moreno Glacier's millenarian ice field. Beginning at the pier in Bajo de las Sombras port, walk across the Rico Arm, and marvel at the breath-taking views of the Perito Moreno Glacier's front wall.

Lake shore walk towards the edge of the glacier

Upon arrival at the opposite shore, mountain guides welcome and lead you to a small shelter. From here, small groups of less than 20 guests take guided walking treks along the lake's shore, and towards the edge of the glacier. Next, the ice guides help you to put on a pair of crampons and explain how to use them.

Glacial-trek and ice formations

The following two-hour circuit introduces you to the fascinating landscape of the glaciers; streams, small lagoons, gullies, crevasses, and plenty of ice formations of the most incredible blues. This moderate trek take place over an ice surface that is irregular, but firm and safe.

Please note: The trek requires an extensive amount of walking, at times over uneven, rocky, icy, and natural surfaces and inclines for approximately 4 hours. It is recommended for active guests in good physical condition and it is not suitable for pregnant guests, overweight guests, guests with back and/or neck problems, guests with heart and/or respiratory conditions, guests prone to motion sickness, guests with a fear of heights, guests who suffer from vertigo, guests with limited mobility, and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests must be between 10 and 65 year old in order to be allowed to participate on the glacier trek. Guests whose weight exceeds twice their height in centimetres, less 100, cannot participate in the glacier-trek (e.g. for guests with a height of 1.70 metres: 170 minus 100 = 70 x 2 = 140 kilograms). Guests wearing less than a ladies' size-five shoes (or European size-35) cannot participate on the glacier-trek, as there are no crampons available in smaller sizes.

Alternative Program: boat-ride along the De Los Tempanos Canal of Argentino Lake

Guests unable to participate in the mini-trekking portion of the tour may opt for an approximately one-hour boat-ride along the De Los Tempanos Canal of Argentino Lake to admire the northern face of the Perito Moreno Glacier from the water. Shortly after departing the port, the northern face of the glacier can be observed from a totally different perspective than that of the catwalks. When close to the glacier, the boat sails its whole front, according to the allowed distances that guarantee participants' safety. The aim is to admire the landscape, and enjoy both the silence and roar that announces the glacier's pieces breaking off, and falling into the water. After witnessing this natural phenomenon, continue to the opposite shore.

Transfer to the Posada Los Alamos Hotel, check-in and some free time

At the conclusion of your glacial hiking trek/boat ride, commence the approximately one-hour transfer back to the hotel, with some free time to freshen-up before dinner.

Mendoza Wine Region

Argentina has taken the international wine world by storm. Coming out of near obscurity, the Argentine wine industry has shown the world's wine professionals and consumers the incredible potential for quality in its high-altitude, mountain vineyards. The international press has been gracious with its praise and recognition, too. In 2009, the respected pages of Robert Parker's 'The Wine Advocate' awarded Argentina no fewer than 200 wines rated above 90 points. Whilst consumers throughout the world have been excited by the reasonable prices of these wines, they have also been frustrated by difficulties in locating the rather limited number of bottles produced. Mendoza has a wide array of wineries. There are 1,341 active wineries in the province of Mendoza, and the cultivated area is approximately 559,570 acres (about 226,450 hectares); a mere three percent of the province's total surface area. During this four-night excursion to the Mendoza wine region and Agrelo, the 'Napa Valley' of Mendoza and home to some of the biggest names in the Argentinean wine industry, discover the exceptional wineries that are rewriting the history of Argentine wine. Following an airport transfer and flight from Buenos Aires to Mendoza, transfer to the Park Hyatt Mendoza for check-in, followed by a dinner featuring International cuisine at a cosy, local restaurant. After breakfast and an overnight stay at the hotel, transfer to the Agrelo Wine Region for private visits and tastings at the Benegas and Matervinis wineries, and lunch paired with wines at the Decero Winery. Following dinner on your own, an overnight stay and breakfast at the Park Hyatt Mendoza, transfer to the high mountain areas of the majestic Andes. Visit Aconcagua National Park, with optional walks to the Puente del Inca site or Los Horcones Viewpoint, then proceed for a Criollo lunch in a typical steakhouse, accompanied by exquisite views of the Andes. Dinner will be served at Grill Q restaurant, within the Park Hyatt Hotel - Mendoza. The rest of the evening is at your leisure. After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the airport for a scheduled, flight to Trelew via Cordoba. Following dinner, an overnight stay and breakfast at the hotel, check-out and transfer to the Estancia San Lorenzo. Upon arrival, visit the nearby Magellanic Penguin Colony, home to over a half-million penguins during peak season. Following your visit, transfer back to the Estancia San Lorenzo for a barbecued lamb lunch. After lunch, your Mid-Voyage Land Adventure concludes on Day Five with a transfer to the port of Puerto Madryn. Upon arrival, embark the ship.

DAY TWO - Tuesday, January 28, 2020 - Mendoza/Agrelo Wine Region/Mendoza

Agrelo wine region

The prime winery area in Mendoza, Agrelo is where many of the best-known, export-oriented Argentine wineries are located. If there is a Napa Valley in Mendoza, this is it. No shopping malls here; only some of the biggest names in Argentine wine.

Breakfast and a transfer to the Agrelo wine region

After breakfast at the hotel, meet your guide and depart for the scenic, approximately 45-minute transfer to the Agrelo wine region, located approximately 28 miles (about 45 kilometres) from downtown Mendoza. Your full-day excursion features lunch, top-shelf wine tastings, local specialities and chilled water; wine and restaurant tips are included.

Private Visit and Tasting at the Benegas Winery

Your first stop features a private visit and wine tastings at Benegas, a traditional winery that belonged to the family of Gladys Alurralde Norton, mother of the current owner, Federico J. Benegas Lynch. Federico was actually born in the property's main house, where he still lives to this day. Throughout his childhood, he worked every step of the way, helping his father in the winemaking process.

About the Benegas Winery

Benegas is focused on quality, and celebrating its Finca Libertad terroir. They believe in the judicious use of oak, maintaining it as a background component in the wine. Tannins should be balanced and the finish long. The total production here is only 30,000 cases. Michelle Roland says, "Benegas wines have a strong personality, which is the result of a very unique terroir for its quality, and the combination of French and Argentine traditions. The wines are a reflection of Frederico Benegas Lynch's passion, and his constant search for excellence."

Private Visit and Tasting at the Matervinis Winery

Next, transfer to Matervinis, a new boutique winery dedicated to experimental soils. Their founders, however, are not new to the winemaking world; Santiago Achaval and Roberto Chipresso are the former owners, founder and winemakers of acclaimed Achaval Ferrer. Today, through their new project, they aim to the exploration of the oldest geologies of pre-Cordillera soils, and their impact on wine personality and flavours. With a very limited production of wines and concentration on high quality, these pioneers are already making a revolution in the industry. Following a guided visit and tasting, transfer to the Finca de Caro Winery.

Gourmet lunch paired with wines at the Decero Winery

Once a bare patch of dirt in the foothills of the Andes, Finca Decero is now a one-of-a-kind vineyard, where each vine is nurtured by hand and the winemaking is without compromise. Free from restraint and tradition, the creators of the winery developed an 'a mano' (by-hand) approach that is human, sustainable and sensitive to natural differences. Upon arrival at Decero, proceed for a set-menu gourmet lunch at the winery paired with wines.

Hotel transfer, with the remainder of the day at your leisure

After lunch, commence the approximately 45-minute transfer back to the hotel. The remainder of the day is at your leisure.
