Silversea Luxury Cruises To Bozcaada

Bozcaada

Small but perfectly formed, Bozcaada (Tenedos in Greek), is Instagram magic. Narrow alleyways lined with colourful houses and heaving with vines provide shade; limpid seas are perfect for cooling off in the summer heat and the plethora of long sandy beaches and arid, rocky hills provide the perfect backdrop for long views across the Aegean. Popular with the high society of Istanbul, Canakkale and Izmir, Bazcaada’s population doubles in the summer and on weekends. View more

But out of season, you can expect a taste of authentic Turkey that has all but been lost. Bozcaada’s crowning glory is undoubtedly its vineyards and local wine production. The island has a viticultural heritage dating back almost 3,000 years and there is virtually no local resident who does not have a history or connection with wine making. In fact, archaeologists working on the island found coins dating back to 5 B.C. with the face of Zeus on one side and a bunch of grapes on the other, leading specialists to think that the islands viticultural history is perhaps one of the oldest in the world! The locals are only too pleased to have you taste (and buy) some of their local produce, so get ready for lengthy (and highly enjoyable) explanations why their wine is so much better than their neighbour’s. Architecturally speaking Bozcaada is a bit of a jumble. Because of its strategic location between Greece and Turkey, the island has been invaded many times, with each civilization leaving their mark. The whole of the island is preserved and restoration is taking place under the watchful eye of the Committee for the Historical Preservation of Cultural and Natural Goods.

Excursions in Bozcaada

Ancient Troy

On this half day tour, discover the ancient city of Troy, which is one the most famous archaeological sites in the world with 4000 years of history.

Boat Ride

Together with your local guide, begin your adventure with a 40 minute ferry boat ride from the island of Bozcaada to Geyikli port, located on the mainland. Upon arrival a motorcoach will be waiting for you for the 40 minute drive from the port to the ancient site of Troy.

Troy

The historical city of Troy is currently located within the borders of modern Turkey. Once thought to be a mythical city invented by Homer in The Iliad, most historians now accept that Troy was his inspiration for the tale. Alexander the Great declared himself a descendent of Achilles, and made a pilgrimage to Troy in 334 B.C.

Although the city is thought to have been inhabited for up to 5,000 years, few structures remain intact. Remaining sites to be explored include Troy's ancient walls, some palaces and houses, the Roman Theatre, the Pillar House, believed to be the Palace of King Priam, and the giant replica of the Trojan Horse. The epic film Troy has revived interest in this piece of ancient history. The area is dotted with the remains of large houses of the Mycenaean settlement, particularly appealing for their stone masonry.

Troy Museum

After visiting the site, proceed to the newly opened Troy Museum which provides fascinating insights about Troy.

Wonder through the various exhibition rooms and enjoy the spectacular view of the site of Troy and the whole region of the Troad from the terrace.

The collections of the museum include the exhibits previously displayed in Çanakkale Archaeological Museum but also other artefacts, transferred from Istanbul Archaeological Museums and Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara. Additionally, there are 24 pieces of gold jewellery returned by the US Penn Museum in 2012. In total, the museum displays around 2,000 artefacts and has more than 40,000 artifacts in its storehouse.

At the end of the visit, return to Geyikli to catch the ferryboat to Bozcaada.

Bozcaada Highlights

Discover the highlights of Turkey's third-largest island, Bozcaada, or Tenedos in Greek. The island features a preserved, colorful and peaceful atmosphere that attracts tourists every summer.

Polente Lighthouse

The tour will start with a scenic drive to Polente for a photo stop at the Lighthouse. Built in 1856, the lighthouse was commissioned by the Ottoman <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Empire> Sultan Abdülmecid I <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abd%C3%BClmecid_I> (reigned 1839-1861) in order to provide safe navigation around the shallow waters before the Yeşilköy Point for ships plying the northwestern coast of the Sea of Marmara towards Istanbul. Today it has been converted as a seafood restaurant.

Ayazma Beach, Agia Paraskevi Chepel, Aquarium Beach

Continue your scenic drive to Ayazma Beach. Ayazma Beach is a perfect resort for those looking for quiet coves, old Greek houses, and a calm and peaceful environment surrounded by historical ruins. Enjoy some free time to stroll along the beach and view the Agia Paraskevi Chapel. Afterwards continue your drive to Aquarium Beach, for an additional memorable photo opportunity.

Refreshment

Back in town, stop for a cooling drink of local wine or beer at a traditional café, before visiting the Bozcaada Castle.

Bozcaada Castle

Built over the ruins of several former castles, the Bozcaada Castle dominates the northeastern end of the island. The current structure was built during the reign of Mahmut II. Once inside, you can climb up the walls for excellent views of the marina and town center.

Turkish and Greek Districts

Bozcaada's Greek and Turkish traditions have greatly influenced the island's culture. Though the island's longtime Greek residents have moved away, Bozcaada's Greek district still retains its original street plan and traditional Greek homes. The Turkish district has a completely different look and feel with beautiful mosques, narrow streets, fountains, and hammams.

Time at leisure in Town

At the end of the tour, enjoy some free time to discover the town or return to the ship.

Corvus Winery

Your next stop is the Corvus Winery. Architect Resit Soley had a dream, and he planted it on the barren lands of Bozcaada. Corvus Vineyard was founded on August 2002, and its seedlings came into leaf in 2003.

The Latin word Corvus means crow. The inspiration for the selection of this name came from the crows of Bozcaada. The founder Resit Soley has been connected with the island for quite a long time. Corvus works with the objective of protecting the local range of grape varieties, and to use them to make high quality wines that would put the island onto the map in world markets. The island series made from 100% regional grapes such as Cavus, Vasilaki, Kuntra and Karalahana represents one of the first steps taken to achieve this aim.

US President Barack Obama, Queen Elizabeth II and Pope Benedict XVI are among the people who were able to sample Teneia during their visit to Turkey.
