Silversea Luxury Cruises To BODRUM

BODRUM

Spread out between two crescent bays, Bodrum exudes an "artsy" ambiance. With its gleaming white houses and colorful flower gardens it is one of the prettiest resorts on the South Aegean coast. Recently, it has become very popular with the jet set crowd, while at the same time maintaining an intimate air; there are strict zoning laws preventing over development. Bodrum's main draws are pristine beaches, a busy yachting center and historic sites - a great combination to attract those sailing the Aegean Sea. View more

Bodrum was known in antiquity as the site of Halicarnassus, a city whose origin dates back as far as 1000 BC. It was known for its splendid mausoleum, an enormous white marble tomb that King Mausolus had planned for himself. It was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Although the structure was obliterated by the ravages of time, archaeologists have arranged models and drawings at the site to provide an idea of what the mausoleum looked like. Bodrum was also the birthplace of Herodotus, who wrote the first comprehensive world history. Today's major cultural attraction is the massive Castle of St. Peter.

Excursions in BODRUM

Aegean Coastal Cruise by Gulet

Enjoy the sea breeze and scenic coastal beauty of Turkey during this half-day cruise aboard an authentic 'Gulet'.

Turkish Coast

Living in Bodrum between the two World Wars, Turkish writer Cevat Sakir Kabaagac wrote an account of his idyllic sailing excursions along the Turkish coast, an area completely untouched by tourism at the time. Kabaagac entitled his book Mavi Yolculuk (Blue Voyage), and any cruise along this coast now shares that name.

Wooden Gulet

From the Bodrum pier, a short shuttle ride transfers you to the marina where you board the traditional Turkish 'Gullet.' The locally crafted gulet's are built of pinewood and feature pointed bows and rounded sterns.

Karrada

Admire Karaada, or Black Island, which is the large hump-backed island you will leaving Bodrum. In calm weather you will see bubbles rising up into a sea-cave in the rocks, where a hot spring said to have therapeutic qualities and fine grey mud is reputed to have been used by beauty guru Elizabeth Arden for some very expensive facial mudpacks.

Swimming

During the tour there is also an opportunity for a swimming break in the Poyraz Limani, a small green bay located around Karaada. On the way back you will sail through a series of mysterious coves, inlets and small islands pitching out into the clear turquoise water of the Aegean.

Refreshments

Soft drinks, tea and coffee will be served along with light snacks during your scenic coastal cruise on the gullet.

Bafa Lake and Heraklia

Experience the nature and beauty of mountains an the daily life of the villagers during this memorable half-day tour.

Lake Bafa

Once, Lake Bafa was connected to the Aegean Sea and was the most remote part of the deep Gulf of Miletus. The lake is surrounded by the Latmos Mountains Besparmak, which rise up to 4,593 Feet (1400 metres). Today, there are 224 known bird species living around Lake Bafa. On the slopes of the Latmos Mountains, twenty different orchids and endemic plants are to be found. Lake Bafa was declared a national park in 1989. The park covers 25 square miles (65 square kilometres) and is home to birds like the Dalmatian pelican, Fish eagle, Common tern, Pygmy Cormorant and the Heron, while the lake itself is populated by those famous eels, Bafa grey mullet, sea bass and sea bream. Wild boar, foxes, wildcats, hedgehogs and badgers all inhabit the surrounding Latmos Mountains.

Heraklia Exploration and Lunch

Depart the pier for the 1-hour 45-minute drive to the ruins of Heraklia; the ruined town lying on the Northeast shore of beautiful Bafa Lake. The town is closely linked to the myths of Selene, the moon goddess, and the mysterious air the place exudes may give you an idea why. The most impressive ruins are from the Byzantine era, and include a fortified castle and its high walls.

Immerse yourself in the way of life of the inhabitants of the quaint old stone and timber villages on the route; visit village houses, see local handicrafts, watch cheese and yogurt being made and enjoy lunch in a local village home.

After lunch rejoin your transport for the scenic drive back to Bodrum and your awaiting ship.

Bodrum Castle

Discover the castle and it's many treasures during this half-day tour.

Bodrum (or ancient Halicarnassus) is situated on a peninsula facing the Island of Kos, which was the hometown of Herodutus. Today, it is a very popular resort town, which draws millions of people every year.

Castle of St. Peter

The entrance to the Castle of St. Peter is just a short distance from the tender landing. The striking Crusader's castle, with its tall, well-preserved towers, was built by the Knights Hospitallers of St. John between 1402 and 1437. Later, other buildings were erected within the precincts of the castle. During the Ottoman period, it was used as a place of exile. Today some of the buildings have been turned into a prominent museum. As you tour the castle complex, there are spectacular views of Bodrum and the surrounding area.

Museum of Underwater Archaeology

The inner castle, which houses the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archeology, is reached after passing through seven gates embellished with coats of arms and inscriptions. The museum is recognized as one of the finest of its kind in the world. It contains many objects discovered by submarine archaeology, including amphora and large copper ingots recovered from a ship, which sank by Cape Gelidonya. Some of the relics once belonged to ancient vessels that foundered off Bodrum. In the Shipwreck Hall there is an outstanding collection of hundreds of colorful, almost phosphorescent glass jars, bottles and vases, salvaged from shipwrecks.

Following your visit, re-join your transport for the return drive to the pier and your awaiting ship.
