Silversea Expedition Cruises To Bigge Island

Bigge Island

At four miles from mainland Australia, Bigge Island is the second largest island in the Bonapart Archipelago (the first is Augustus Island), and perhaps one of the most interesting places there is in The Kimberley. Traditionally owned by the Uunguu peoples of the Wunambal language group (whose name for the island is Wuyurru), it was discovered in 1820 by Captain Phillip Parker King. View more

Although much of the island is made up of striking bare rock, deep fissures and valleys contain plant life which helps support the animals living on the island. However, the Aboriginal influence is very present, and the highlight of the island is the beautifully preserved rock art. The heritage is very closely guarded by the Wunambal Gaambera people, notably more so than on other islands as Wuuyuru is a resting place for Tribal Leader Gayarra Wanjina Aarwarrndju, and as such, visitors to the area are requested to kindly respect the cultural laws. Stellar examples of both Gwion Gwion (also known as Bradshaw) and Wandjina rock art, estimated to be an astonishing 50,000 years old can be seen on many of the coastal cave walls, and offer invaluable insight to the culture and history of the island. Additionally, a lack of feral predators on the island means that the delicate eco-systems have been maintained, and wildlife has flourished. Bring your binoculars and camera and look out for northern quoll, Monjon rock wallaby and langnalya scaly tailed possum. One of the rarest snakes in the world – the rough scaled python – also calls Bigge Island home, so make sure you don’t wander too far into the Bush!
