Silversea Luxury Cruises To BERGEN

BERGEN

The crooked, pastel-coloured warehouses of Bergen’s World Heritage waterfront lean together charmingly, welcoming visitors to this city at the heart of Norway’s most extraordinary cinematic landscapes. It may be the country’s second largest city, but the villagey feel here always provides a warm welcome - even when the weather is living up to its famously damp reputation. Bergen’s colourful waterfront, Bryggen, is a ramshackle line-up of incredible Hanseatic warehouses, built following the devastating fire of 1702, which ransacked the city. View more

These iconic warehouses have stood proudly ever since, with Bergen growing and expanding around the colourful facades. Behind them, a labyrinth of narrow alleyways and wooden decking waits, alive with artisan craft shops and bustling galleries. Fløyen mountain watches over the city, and you can take a short but steep hike up to the panoramic viewpoints, or jump on the funicular, which trundles visitors up and down the incline. At the top, spectacular views of Bergen jutting out into the dark seas below unfold before your eyes. Wait until evening to see the sunset painting glorious golden light across the city and waves, and Bergen’s lights flickering into life. Nærøyfjorden, a deeply etched fjord nearby, is perhaps Norway’s most photographed and iconic piece of scenery. A cruise through the base of this spectacular narrow fjord, parting the glass-smooth inky waters, is an utterly humbling experience, as the claustrophobically-close slopes rise imposingly over you. Sognefjord also stretches out nearby, and is Norway’s longest fjord, adorned with plunging waterfalls and vibrant farms during summer.

Excursions in BERGEN

A Taste of Hardanger

Embrace the spectacular natural beauty and flavours of the Hardanger region during this panoramic, full-day sightseeing excursion.

Samnangerfjord, Kvamskogen and Steinsdalsfossen Waterfall

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 75-minute drive northeast to the Steinsdalsfossen Waterfall. En route, pass by the Samnangerfjord, then continue towards Kvamskogen, the popular weekend and holiday destination of the Bergenser (inhabitants of Bergen). The magnificent Steinsdallsfossen Waterfall actually falls away from the cliff, which enables you to take an optional walk behind the waterfall without getting wet. Following your visit, re-board your coach and head towards the Hardangerfjord.

Hardangerfjord and Steinstø Fruit Orchard

Among the favourites of the many Norwegian fjords, the Hardangerfjord is framed by mountains reflecting in the clear water, and famous for its many orchards and fruit blossoming in May. Along the way, a visit is made to the Steinstø Fruit Orchard. This lovely farm is nestled in a scenic location at the foot of the mountains above the Hardangerfjord, and has been family-owned and operated for eight generations. Upon arrival, a family member greets and escorts you on a guided walking tour through the orchard. Apples, cherries, pears, berries, and other fruit are grown here, and some of the fruit is processed and preserved. On clear days, you can see the Fonna Glacier in the distance.

Lunch and Bergen's City Centre

Following your tour, proceed for lunch with apple cake served in the farm's restaurant. After lunch, some free time is made available to browse some of the farm's products for sale. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately two-hour drive back to the pier. En route, take a short sightseeing drive through Bergen City, passing the fish and flower markets, 13th-century Bergenhus Fortress, medieval King Håkon's Hall and Rosenkrantz Tower. Time-permitting, you can leave the tour at Bryggen and remain in Bergen's city centre for independent shopping and sightseeing at your leisure, then return to the pier on your own.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 1.2 miles-1.5 miles (about 1.96 kilometres to 2.4 kilometres), at times over uneven and slippery surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, and numerous steps and thresholds at the sites visited. The optional walk behind the Steinsdallsfossen Waterfall is approximately 300 yards (about 274 metres) in each direction, and over ascending/descending terrain. This tour is not suitable for guests with a fear of tunnels, guests prone to motion sickness, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring a jacket from the ship. Local currency is required at comfort stops. Local, air-cooled vehicles are utilised on this tour. The tour sequence may vary.

Bergen for Art Lovers

Explore spectacular collections of Norwegian art and design on-foot during this guided, half-day sightseeing excursion for art lovers.

Bergen, Bryggen Wharf Area Walking Tour, Hanseatic Buildings, Fish Market

Depart the pier for a scenic, approximately 45-minute walking tour along the Bryggen Wharf area, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, where small boats line the harbour and wooden-gabled Hanseatic buildings stand proudly along the waterfront. Pass by the well-known fish market, now housed in a stunning new glass building, before continuing on to KODE - the Art Museums of Bergen.

KODE 3 Museum, Guided Tour, Edvard Munch Masterpieces, Rasmus Meyer Collection

Upon arrival, take a guided tour of the KODE 3 Museum, one of the four buildings. Along the way, experience a unique collection of works and paintings by Edvard Munch, including many of his masterpieces from all of the major paradigms of his artistic career. Most of the works are part of the collection of Rasmus Meyer, a Norwegian merchant who acquired a number of major works by Norwegian artists from the late-19th-early-20th-century. One of the works is a unique version of Scream, which Munch drew with pen and ink. This small-scale version of Scream is one of the jewels in KODE's Munch-collection. The rest of the Rasmus Meyer Collection consists of a rich collection of art from Norway's 'Golden Age', as well as historical items and furniture from the Bergen area.

Free Time, KODA 1, Silver Treasure Exhibition, Singer Collection, KODA 4, Artwork, Museum Shop

Next, some free time is made available to explore the other museum buildings at your leisure. The KODE 1 Museum exhibits fine crafts and designs. The KODE 4 Museum displays the museum's core collection, ranging from 14th-century icons to Norwegian and international Modernism. KODE 1 presents a permanent exhibition, the 'Silver Treasure', featuring silver and gold objects produced in Bergen, and the Singer Collection, consisting of European and Asiatic antiques, paintings and works by the old masters. At KODE 4, experience Norwegian artists like J.C. Dahl and Christian Krogh, and international names like Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee and Asger Jorn. Books and gifts are available in the Museum Shop. At the designated time, re-join your guide outside KODE 3 and commence the approximately 35-minute walk back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 3.1 miles (about five kilometres), at times over uneven surfaces, with stairs to negotiate inside the museum. Walking at the museum is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing in layers with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection, a weatherproof jacket, umbrella, and bottled water from the ship. The tour sequence may vary. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.
