Silversea Expedition Cruises To APIA

Silversea Luxury Cruises - Apia, Samoa Islands

As the first independent state of Polynesia, Samoa is considered the cradle of the nation, a place where the Earth and the heart fuse seamlessly fuse together. Incidentally, were one to translate the word “Samoa” into the traditional Polynesia dialect, they would find that the words “Sa” and “Moa” mean exactly that: earth and centre. Apia, Samoa’s only town, is found central north coast of Upolu, Samoa’s second largest island. Originally a tiny village of just over 300 inhabitants (c. View more

1800), the town’s population has grown to be just shy of 40,000. While a population of such size might mean forgetting traditional roots in favour of modern life, this has not been the case (too much) in Apria. The Samoan way of life is still very much the order of the day; traditional open-sided houses with thatched roofs on platforms of coral or concrete, also known as ‘fales’, can be seen everywhere and nearly all of the population (including the policemen) wear the typical local dress; skirts, or ‘lavalavas’ for men, and long, mumu-style dresses for women. The markets are bursting with culture and colour, selling everything from handicrafts to cuisine and local produce. If the idyllic setting of aquamarine pools of bluey green water, framed by low fringed palms and huge umbrella trees seems familiar, that’s because it probably is. The island, and notably the southern resort of Lefaga, was used in the 1953 Gary Cooper classic Return to Paradise Beach. It is also the last place on Earth to see each day’s sunset.

Excursions in APIA

Return to Paradise Beach

Discover the beauty and wonder of Return to Paradise Beach in Lefaga which is located on the south west coast of Upolu Island on this half day city tour. Return to Paradise Beach received its name after Hollywood location scouts discovered it and was the main stage for the 1953 Hollywood movie starring Gary Cooper and Roberta Haynes. Samoans have always had love affair with this particular beach as it is simply spectacular.

Scenic Drive

Depart the pier and embark on a scenic drive to Return to Paradise Beach Resort. En-route to Return to Paradise from the town of Apia, the route is dotted with tropical gardens that are well manicured and full of vibrant colours. You will also see equally magnificent churches with designs you've probably never seen before. Add to the mix the plantations of taro, breadfruit trees, and fruit trees in lush surroundings and always with the mountains as a backdrop.

Return to Paradise Beach Resort

Return to Paradise Beach Resort opened in 2013 by the Prime Minister of Samoa and is looked upon as a place that was built upon love. So many wonderful stories of achievement and empowerment have resulted from the inception of Return to Paradise Resort. Prior to the resort's existence the unemployment rate at the district of Lefaga was around 60 to 70%. The locals came together to help build the resort and created employment for many. When you visit Return to Paradise Beach, you're not really visiting a resort but rather you're being hosted by the extended family who own this cultural land for over three thousand years.

Enjoy an interactive coconut demonstration and gain appreciation of the many uses of this tree which Samoan call "the tree of life" because every part of the coconut has a use to Samoans whether it's for food, health, beauty, canoe, house building and more.

Now gear up to enjoy approximately 2 hours of free time to explore, swim or relax with full use of the resorts facilities. You will truly experience the gentle spirit of this wonderful place, and maybe one day you will once again Return to Paradise for a longer stay.

At the conclusion of the tour re-board your vehicle for the approximate 45 minute drive back to the pier.

Please Note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking of up to 620 yards (1860 feet) with 10 steps to manage at the entrance of the resort over sometimes paved and sometimes sandy terrain. This tour is not suitable for guests who are wheelchair bound as ADA vehicles are not available. Guests with limited mobility must be assisted by their travel companion(s). We recommend guests wear light comfortable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, hat, sun protection, bathing suit and towel from the ship. Samoan Extravaganza

Samoa translated into English is "Sa" means Sacred and "Moa" means 3 things: Earth, Heart or Centre.

Prepare to be amazed with the depiction of the true essence of Samoan culture mixed with stories of a proud race of Polynesian explorers who settled these lands for over three thousand years. The O Samoa Extravaganza will leave you emotionally moved throughout the entire performance.

Depart the pier for the short drive to Robert Louis Stevenson's Museum with a warm welcome of drums as you are brought onto the grounds.

Upon arrival you will be greeted by Samoan hosts and hostesses with scented tropical garlands. Servers will be serving wine, beer and beverages. Guests are given a few minutes of mixing and mingling with background Samoan music playing and are invited to be seated in the gazebo tents for the start of the show.

The show O SAMOA will commence at 3pm.

A group of 100 warriors will perform for 30 minutes a mix of beautifully choreographed Samoan warrior dances, the slap dance, the sasa, songs and war chants that would make your guests be awed and emotional at the same time. The finale will be the fire knife dance by the warriors followed by a farewell medley.

Please Note: This tour requires minimal amount of activity or walking, however there are 20 steps to manage at the Museum. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair. Advance notice must be requested by emailing ShoreConcierge@Silversea.com for ADA accessible vehicles to be organized. We recommend guests wear smart casual clothing, sunhat, sun lotion, and be sure to bring your camera.
