Silversea Luxury Cruises To AMALFI

Silversea Luxury Cruises - Amalfi Coast, Italy
Silversea Luxury Cruises - Amalfi Coast, Italy

Spectacular tiers of colour splashed houses cascade down to immeasurably blue seas and hidden coves, along Italy’s premier coastline. Lemon groves and vineyards bask in the country’s generous southern sun, running alongside dramatic mountain precipices, and dazzlingly romantic fishing villages. View more

The Amalfi Coast is rightly celebrated as a treasure of Italy, and you can enjoy the true scale of it, and the feel of the salty sea breeze in your hair, as you hike the Path of the Gods - where some of the best heavenly views of the beautiful beaches and improbably teetering villages open up below you. The call of beachside bliss is never far away, and descending down to Duoglio Beach is a mesmerising introduction to the coastline’s jagged rock setting and crystalline waters. A dramatic ramp of steps rears up to Amalfi's distinctive black and white striped, Moorish-influenced cathedral, which stands at the heart of the town. Inside, tranquillity awaits amid the arches and columns of the Cloister of Paradise. Chattering piazzas, where ice cubes clink in glowing spritz cocktails, and strong espressos are savoured, hum with life nearby. Enjoy plates of shellfish tangled spaghetti or spicy pezzente salami in your choice of the Amalfi Coast’s celebrated restaurants, before tasting locally-squeezed limoncello - the perfect denouement to any meal here. Grand villas, spectacular restaurants and well-heeled visitors have long given Amalfi a reputation for refined luxury, but things haven’t always been so peaceful here. In the 10th and 11th centuries, Amalfi was an independent maritime republic, and the Municipal Museum of Amalfi is the place to learn of the region’s rise to global trading prominence, and the devastating tsunami that washed it all away in 1343.

Excursions in AMALFI

Amalfi Walking Tour

Amalfi, a rare place, where photographs simply don't do the sights justice, see them up close and personal on this walking tour through the seaside village of the Amalfi Coast. Explore the small streets and walk in the footsteps of history where the beauty of this ancient place comes alive.

Amalfi

Join your guide from the seaside promenade Via delle Repubbliche Marinare to Piazza Municipio also called "Campolillo", the ancient quarter of St. Angelo intra Moenia ( within the walls) passing through the tiny alleyways of Moorish Amalfi. Continue to the "Alley Trap" where the enemies of Amalfi were attracted and eliminated. A few paces ahead find the secondary entrance to the Cathedral of St. Andrew, which you will pass by following the narrow passage St. Andrea.

Visit this monumental complex: the Bell Tower, the Cloister of Paradise, the Basilica of Crucifix, with its frescoed chapels and the museum with sacred treasure, The Crypt, built in 1206 to hold the sacred remains of St. Andrew Apostole, the Moorish stlyle Cathedral, which features stunning 11th century bronze door from Constantinople.

Continue your stroll through the historic center of Amalfi, passing by the Santa Maria Maggiore square and the Supportico Rua to Piazza Santo Spirito where you can admire the remains of an ancient palace with medieval Venetian style balcony and the characteristic fountain "Capa e ciuccio" (Donkeys head) so-called as the mules returning from the Valley of the Ironworks were watered there. Today in the fountain has been placed a very impressive Nativity.

Paper Museum

Continue on to the Amalfi's Paper Museum, located in a 14th century medieval paper-mill and which hosts machineries and instruments used in the ancient paper-mills. The ancient technologies, restored and active, reconstruct the entire production cycle of the paper. Among the century-old tools in the museum it is possible to admire the ancient wooden mauls, operated by a hydraulic wheel; the press used to remove the water in excess from the paper; the continuous printing machine. The museum also gives you the opportunity of assisting the handmade paper production and the functioning of the ancient water-mills, moved by the waters of the Canneto torrent.

After the visit, stroll through the west side of the old town to the square where once stood the Palace of the Doges. Our walking tour concludes in Piazza Duomo, dominated by the impressive façade of the St. Andrew Cathedral.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking and is recommended for those guests who are physically fit. Total distance walked is approximately 1 mile (1.6km) with slopes, some cobblestones, steps and some standing at times. Comfortable clothing, walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Tour sequence may vary depending on day.

Ancient Pompeii

The famous archaeological site of Pompeii is regarded as the world's finest example of an ancient Roman town, and offers visitors an insight into the life of a bygone era. Buried for centuries, it was not until 1748 that the Pompeii was rediscovered and its excavations began. Explore the ruins of this city on this half-day excursion.

After tendering ashore, board the local shuttle to the uptown meeting point where your coach will be waiting. A drive of approximately 90 minutes takes you to the excavated town of Pompeii.

Pompeii

Upon arrival in Pompeii, your guided walking tour begins through the ancient streets, providing a unique opportunity to learn about the historical events and the tragic end of the city's 20,000 people. The catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. surprised the population of this prosperous provincial capital and resort town, burying it under 20 feet (6 metres) of ash and pumice stone, yet preserving an entire city.

City Tour

See the mansions and artwork of the wealthy residents who moved to Pompeii to escape the turmoil of Ancient Rome. On display are numerous paintings and inscriptions, including notices about wine sales, apartment vacancies, upcoming events, political announcements, and even personal love notes. In addition to several homes, highlights also include the Forum, open and covered theatres, and the Stabian Baths. The pathways are endless and the buildings fascinating. Some of the mansions still retain their original marble decorations, well-preserved frescoes and splendid mosaics. Following your visit to this amazing site, return to the coach parking area and re-board your coach for the drive back to Amalfi.

Please note: This tour takes place entirely on foot and requires an extensive amount of walking on cobblestones and uneven surfaces. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. A minimum number of guests per guide are required to operate this programme.

Discover a birds-eye view of many villages of the Amalfi Coast as you hike 1,500 feet above sea level, with breathtaking views of the bright blue water below and majestic Mount Pertuso in the distance. The Path of the Gods, or Il Sentiero degli Dei, provides an intimate window into daily life along the Amalfi Coast, where residents of ancient homes grow wine grapes and tomatoes on their terraced farmland plots, taking full advantage of the steep terrain. The path leads eventually to Positano, though your three-hour hike cannot get you there; rejoin the coach to drive a short distance to the end of the Path of the Gods.

Discover Lovely Positano

Make your last stop in beautiful Positano to relax after your three-hour hike. Wind your way through this cliff-side village filled with colorful homes and buildings that seem to have grown right out of the surface of the cliff, just as naturally as the terraced farmland you saw on your hike. Quench your thirst with a refreshment at a local restaurant and take some time on your own to explore Positano's exquisite boutiques and pleasant seaside cafes.

Make the scenic 1-hour return trip to the pier.
